Hi there
I know Andy1199 has (already) upgraded his bike's chain. Anyone else planning on doing this?

Is it a worthwhile upgrade?

Perhaps coupled with a rear sprocket change?

Advice/opinions please.

I will after the 600 miles.

I plan to get my money's worth out of the OEM first, then just do the rear sprocket and DID chain at the same time...@ 700+ miles now

noob question: what is the benefit of the new chain, and what kind do you have in mind?
thanks

well my reason is usually to change gearing (sprockets). did a 520 convertion on my 999, Went with D.I.D. gold chain and AFRAM sprocket.

didn't have my 1198 long enough to mess with it lol (6 months)

I will probably try to get more grunt (torque) off the line because I can live without 10 mph off the top...I already hit 170 on my bike very quickly with plenty kick left...180 I can live with ;-)

How long (in terms of mileage) before you'll do the chain/sprocket change?

I was thinking about doing the chain at 600 miles (like OneArmBandit) but maybe I could go longer...perhaps to the end of the full run-in (approx 1500 miles)?

The OEM chain isn't supposed to be great quality. With something like a DID chain, you'll get a lot more chain life with a much better quality chain.

Is 525 to 520 really an "upgrade" per se or a change ? I mean, yes its a bit lighter and its unsprung which means its multiple several factors, but the difference in weight is really minimal if you're comparing the same. Now, there might be a bit more weight savings going from OEM to aftermarket 525 as I'm not sure how large that one is, but I do believe that the difference between aftermarket 525 to aftermarket 520 is less than a pound. So, its marginally lighter and marginally weaker - neither of which makes any difference in 99.9% of riders (and I would even say 99.9% of Panigale riders - not just all riders). Certainly not worth the hassle in my book.

Sprocket and gearing - certainly a worthy consideration, especially since 95% of most riding is going to be in the non-top range of the bike,. . .

Well that's why I said mainly to change gearing...I wouldn't change my sprocket without changing chain also.

By the way, the OEM chain is plenty sufficient for 80% of riders across the board so it's not usually at the to of the mod list...not chain by it self anyway.

I would consider this whole upgrade maybe by the time new rear tire is needed...around 3500 miles on street (reduced significantly if I do a track session)

Saturday night i went out and hit 186 and i think i need to change the rear sprocket from 38 to 37 for more top end, The power its there,But i thing 5th gear its short. On my bmws1000rr on 5th gear i reach 180 on the 1199 171,Lets see what haPENS after THIS RAIN clears in NY.

Haha nice...but can you take corners? I think top speed is easy, and this bikes has plenty...I'd out break and out corner the typical straight line speeder ;)

Nice....I personally would like more low end kick coming Out them corners... And I know I could change my riding style (gear choice to enter turns and wrist power delivery) to get it (coming off a few 999 and 1198)

I use mostly engine breaking and I love it on the Pani, so I dont wanna change Me when I can simply change my sprockets lol

I'll pick mine up this week and post some pics.

I haven't gone for the sprocket yet simply because I want some miles on it with no rev limit to see if it needs it or not. Around town it might be helpful but the 1199 ain't so bad round there. What I don't want is what I had with the 1198s, I changed the sprocket on that to improve it round town and then got hit in the face with the yolk as soon as I rang its neck anywhere.

I've used DID chains on all my Ducatis for years and they last forever and look great. I have a 748 R that's got one on I must have put on at least eight years ago and with good maintenance and low-ish mileage it looks like new today and is still a subtle as a new one. They look good too.

It's a cheap upgrade too. If I need the sprocket it can go on around 1600 miles and the chain will be 900 miles old should bed in fine, I know your supposed to change them together but 900 miles is nothing.
