Winter Riding

I have been using my Joe Rocket Jacket and gloves and been getting by around Norhtern VA and DC. When I ride further (couple hundred miles) I just put liners in with my gloves. I must admit the only thing that gets cold on me is my hands. I wear only jeans for my legs and I will put a hoody on under my riding jacket. This gets me by for the 30's but I think if it gets any lower I will have to figure something else out.

Yeah, I can get to and from work with thick revit winter gloves and a revit cayenne with both liners in (waterproof and insulating), but anything longer than 30-45 minutes at highway speeds and my hands turn into useless blocks. I usually use the heated stuff for anything under 45 or so. I've used it well down into the 20s and in the rain, but those aren't the smartest conditions to be riding in the first place. :)

Many good advise from above.

I ride every day with my Harley to work...even in low 30s to high 20s.
What I do use: gortex textile winter jacket $250 and over pants $130. Gortex boots and I wear light down jacket, thermal shirt, long pants and jeans under the over pants. Dainese gortex winter gloves. It's 5 mins to put the gears/cloths on but is worth it.

I also have a pair of textile over pants that I wear over the top of slacks, khakis, jeans, etc. and I never have issues with my lower extremeties getting cold. Does your Harley have a windshield? Just curious since that makes a big difference. I can actually really tell the difference between the Pani and my SF. The fairing isn't much, but it makes a huge difference in temperature. The SF is freezing!

I hate riding a sportbike in cold weather, just no fun at all. Its been real cold in LA recently but my Alpinestars full leather suit keeps me mostly warm, only thing is it's a little too well ventilated on real cold days. I went for a quick ride yesterday morning and noticed the engine temp never got above 145 degrees.. normally its around 175.

I cant believe you are complaining about LA weather...

I wish I had LA weather all year around. :D

textile over pants (rain protection) with knee protection and little butt pads is best $130 bucks I spent.

I dont have the windshield... I probably should get one because it is a big difference.

IMHO, unless you are a genetic freak or install brush guards you can't make the hands work in those kinds of temps for anything except short distances unless you get heated gear (Gerbings, Powerlet, etc.) or heated grips.

I have Gerbings at the moment and ride year round. We have another thread on it someplace around here...

I read that, but didn't want to go that route if avoidable since I don't/can't commute on it. I thought that there might not be much else that would work in that temp range. That's the only part of me that's cold enough to concern me. Feels like I have catchers mitts on trying to shift and brake.

Thanks

That's the only reason I do it. I wouldn't be out tooling around for fun in 28 degree weather no matter how much heated gear I had on. :)

After riding my Panigale in 45 degree weather, in a mesh Ducati leather jacket that lets the air right through (it was a great idea this summer!) - I was wanting to find what others wear in 50 and below degrees - either under your mesh leathers, or instead of.

We never have this issue in NSW....:D

Under Armour cold gear mock tops plus a couple of thin fleeces under jacket. Just purchased Klim Traverse jacket for winter commute. Genuine goretex woven into 840 cordura for $299!!! Have to buy arm, shoulder and back protectors separately but only about $30 each. I'm really pleased with it! :D
+1 on the above, works for me down to low 50's/high 40's

What over pants to you use? I have been wearing leathers then changing into a pair of khakis I keep at work.

I got all my gear for the hot summer days as well and is air oriented. However, i do go out in the 40's for a ride especially if there is a bit of sun. I put the under armour thermal 3 long sleeve and long jhons under the dair and it works just fine. I use this ua for hunting as well so it is well proven and a good one to stay warm ;)

I used to the the same thing you do. I had several pairs of khakis hanging on the back door of my office and once a week would take them all home and wash them and then bring them back. The ones I have are Joe Rocket Ballistic pants, but they aren't the current model since I have had them for a few years. I removed the liners and padding/armor (was too bulky and hot with khakis or jeans underneath) and they have been working great for years. They are the kind that zip all the way up each side of the leg so you can put them on while wearing shoes/boots. Just make sure to size them appropriately since you will have a whole other pair of pants underneath them (possibly with a belt, etc.).

I got these. Very good review, good price and they are on sale now also. I tried few other but returned it. I been using it for few weeks now and I love it.

Layers, Full length skins under leathers, Dainese glove liners, although it rarely drops below 50F here so no salt, or leaves. We have to deal with Kangaroos, snakes amd Emus all year round if that makes you feel better though!

Yeah, you guys have like the most deadliest animals (snakes, spiders, sharks) in the world.

Don't forget the deadliest animal of all - the commuter in the SUV going 70 while texting, listening to Justin Bieber, shaving, eating breakfast and reading the paper at the same time.

+1 I wouldn't even know how to ride if everyone was actually paying attention to the road here. :D
