Send your engineers to KTM. They seem to have figured it out with the RC390. And @ $5500 they've sold out the allotment for the US this year I understand. And rumors are rife that Triumph (Triumph!) are going to be entering the market next year with a sport single.
KTM getting 45hp with that $5.5. You'd think Ducati engineers could get another 15-20 hp in a motor for another $10k-$15k @ retail - given they already have a prototype (Supermono) to work with.
The shame of it - KTM giving lessons to Ducati. ;)

I would love to see Triumph enter the ultralight/entry segment, but to do so with anything other than a 300-400cc version of their triple would be a huge missed opportunity. If they do decide to make an appearance, that would bring it to: Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, KTM, and Triumph. Very neat, but it seems like somebody's missing "¦

KTM has also been building high performance singles since forever. And all their developments get used in engines in several different lineups. It's going to be right up there with the V4 that we all crave, except that would have potential for being used in other models. Unless Ducati is thinking of jumping into dirty bikes.

But it would kick ...!

Steve B - what displacement would you see a new ST needing to be to compete with the R1200RS? Bare bones equipment simple and light, or fully-stocked techno wonder? Agree with you on the ergos

I think the market's already made the displacement call with 1200-1300cc being the range. Could easily be done with less for someone doing only solo riding, but suitable base engines already exist so best to use what you have to limit development cost. As for bells-n-whistles, I think you solve that with options packages. Base model with only the must-haves for today like ABS etc., then maybe one or two tiers above with electronic suspension, factory luggage, etc. Being a Ducati, of course it would need to be leaner, lighter (Fortitudo mea in levitate, after all... ;)), and more sport oriented than the competition.

Liking the connection of lightness to the brand, by the way. It's a basic concept, and one that's easy to understand and pays dividends all the time. It was one of the strongest factors in my buying my Panigale. More, please!

I think $8k is unrealistic, that's $3k lower than the Monster 821, but I agree that there is a market opportunity for a premium "entry" sportbike.

Forced induction is an interesting question. In some general hardware trends the bike industry follows autos, in others it does not. Turbos have become ubiquitous in high performance car engines out of necessity, but even in the areas bikes tend to follow autos, there is usually a significant time lag. In my personal opinion the widespread implementation of forced induction (driven by necessity) is highly dependent upon the rate at which other potentially more attractive technologies mature and become increasingly viable for motorcycles, the obvious example being electrics.

Although I personally wouldn't mind paying $11-$12k, mid to high $9k is about as high as I would imagine would be feasible for the new rider. Anymore than that and you start getting into Japanese I-4 600 territory, which many new riders are all too eager to explore. On the other hand, if the bike is good enough to even come close to competing with those in power to weight ratio and riding features, then Ducati could probably get away with it.

I agree, that 600cc supersport market is way too competitive $12k for that kind of performance is insane. Anything approaching that will be a tough sell.

Love to see more midtier power engine around $6-8k range. If Aprilia fitted their 450SX engine into a sport bike and made it street legal RS450, that would awesome.

Mag wheels top shelf Ohlins and trick engine parts for an additional $2.5-3k over base price is way too optimistic. How many would be interested in the 899 you describe at an equal or higher price to a standard 1299?

I would have been all over it :D

1299 SF. And offer more color choices. I would like to see the Tri-color be more available then as special editions.

Another vote for a V4 superbike but it has to have Ducati style. When I put my deposit on the new R I admittedly was torn between the R and the new RSV4 RF because I'm a V4 fan but the Ducati has SO MUCH more style than the RSV4 that I went wit the Ducati. I'd have a Desmosedici if I could afford one. Agree on seeing more user friendly interfaces added in with touch screen, rear view "mirror" cameras, etc.

If there was an 899S with Marchesini wheels, Ohlins, SSSA, LED lights, all the same electronics as the big bike, etc. I'd have one in my garage, even if it was equal or greater in price to a base 1299. I don't need 205HP.

Love the idea of a bit more a café racer version of the scrambler.

Would love to see the Multi offered in more of an Adv version with crash guards, TKC80 tires, maybe even a 19" front wheel.

Hey TJ.

Take the 899 as it sits and add Mag wheels, full nix30 and ttxgp ohlins and a few other trick bits(some ti engine parts) and make it a right out the box package for insane street riding and track/race fun. That could all be had for around $17.5-18k USD ish lol.

Oh and also as Kev said 1199SF omg I'm drooling. I'd buy it. Make one version. $22k with ohlins shock and marz/bpf forks s/r wheels and boom instant badass

I'd buy an 899R or 899 EVO SP or whatever you would want to call it.
Tweak the motor for more output, give it everything the 1199 has in terms of electronics and make it stupid light with mag or carbon wheels, ohlins.
Be all over that!

sexparty - not following you, Hyper SP totally meets simple light great sus and wheels brief. As for the R cost, the engine doesn't justify it but rearsets wheels and paddock stands would? Please explain because believe me it'd help margins to substitute the R's engine with the nicest paddock stands you've ever seen ;)

I'm just struggling to understand what the additional cost is buying me this time. Because for the additional $18,500.00AUD over the $30,000.00 base model I could get myself a spare 899 Panigale.

Am I completely overlooking the magnitude of the new motor for the 2015 Panigale R and what it means from a cost perspective, design stand point and how I will feel when I'm riding it, because all I'm seeing is a 3HP and 3NM of torque increase (is the midrange stronger, is the flat line in the torque curve gone)? The new racing clutch, the two ring pistons, the lighter crankshaft, titanium exhaust valves do they make that much of a difference?

Does the 2015 R come with lighter wheels than the S model? Does it come with a kit like the 2014 R did with the winglets, racing screen, mirror block off plates and full Termignoni system with up map? Yes, it does come with adjustable geometry.

I saw a lot of value in my 2014 R over the 2014 S and I was happy with that purchase. But I'm failing to see what I'm getting this time for my money. All I seem to see this time are the things I'm not getting and the things I still need to buy on top of the bike to have it how it should come, ie; rearsets, non-homologated Akrapovic slip-ons etc.

Maybe I won't give a .... once I'm riding it...

The V4 would be awesome. A track only version like KTM did with their RC8R, which I owned prior to the Panigale. Definitely the way to go...even if it was a "order only bike" That would be a great option.

I definitely think they should come out with a Chaz Davies replica when he finally gets in on top of the Rostrum. The thing should come with Magnesium Oz rims and better electronics. To be honest I have no problem dropping $45k on a Ducati Panigale if they made it worth my wild. I still think they could have sold 10,000 SLs had they dropped the price to $50k.

If Ducati is in bed now with Akrapovic, then they should get track only manifolds released for us. Oil cooler as STD equipment.

I need the sport classic to come back into production or a variant of it. Or make the scrambler parts to convert it to a classic.

TJ99 please tell the boys in Bologna to make delete plugs ends for the Ohlins electronic Suspension that came on the models prior to 2015 the damn light is annoying.

Thank you Santa incase your listening :)

My wish for Ducati is to get Porsche South Africa out of the distribution chain. :D

I should slap and kiss you for that lol. I'd def be broke for forever if they did those 2. I'd trade my 1199 for any Davies model Pani and WSBK Manifolds for it omg.

Im Interested in one with the pop up Starbucks espresso maker under the seat cowl for those times hanging with your bearded hipster buddies on the roadside.

i created a photoshop image a couple of years ago here and on ducati.ms....

i'd like a TRUE STREETFIGHTER based on the Panigale with no compromises in aesthetics or performance (unlike the original streetfighter which was limited by budget).
