Are u sure you are getting 30 volts AC at the stator leads unplugged, if the stator was shorted to ground, the voltage may be 3 or .3 volts AC, check your meter scale.

Mmmmm, but you did say you were getting 14 / 15 volts DC at the regulator output terminals, so that would indicate stator OK.

Recheck and advise.

That's the crazy thing and what I can't figure out. It's getting 29.9-30.0v on every yellow wire when measured across the pins (1-2, 2-3, 1-3), but when you measure resistance to ground from the same wires it's .3 ohms. How is that possible>

I reckon you have it on volts going from stator to ground not ohms scale

Got the replacement stator today. Checked ohms on the replacment unit from the wires to ground on the stator ring. Infinite resistance. Hopefully this will cure the problem. We'll see

Cured!

Well! The stator was the problem. I pulled the cover after getting a replacement and viola; 3 nice brown cooked coils. Installed the new one and got 14.15V across the battery at idle. I'm stoked, still time to ride this weekend! Thanks to all that contributed ideas. This forum is great!

PS wanted to post a pic but my file size was too big and don't know how to reduce to fit

Surprised it fixed it given that you had correct voltages being ouput and they should last a very long time.

Agreed. As an airframe and powerplant technician I can't explain it either. I'm still at a loss how you can have voltage at the RR with very little resistance across the stator coils to ground. Good to go now though.

How many miles were on the bike when it went bad?
