Hello guys! I'm new here. I seek wisdom. I'm in a crossroad right now and having a really hard time choosing which bike should I go for, the 1199 S or the D16RR. Which would you strongly suggest? Any insight, advice, and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Sure the D16RR is something special but this year 2012 there is only one bike to beat

The 1199 PANIGALE

I'm not sure that I can make a fair comparison having never ridden either of them.
Please feel free to add or dispute my points:

D16RR Pros:
1. Exclusivity
2. V-4 or L-4 if you prefer. Either way, I love V-4's most, Twins, second, I-4's 3rd.
3. Probably a cooler bike to have long term as so few will have ever owned one.

D16RR Cons:
1. Price still north of $40K for bike without warranty.
2. Older technology (awesome 3 years ago, slightly behind 2012 Panigale).
3. Insurance premiums are guaranteed to be high.
4. 16" rear wheel limiting tire choices.
5. Upgrades are prohibitively expensive due to high MSRP of original bike and low # of units.
6. Expensive maintenance.

Panigale Pros:
1. Same or almost similar power with 10lbs less weight
2. Cheaper, even the Tricolore with full exhaust and all the carbon bits as options.
3. 2 year warranty.
4. Cheaper insurance.
5. Cheaper upgrade/aftermarket parts.
6. Newest technology and electronics.
7. Cheaper maintenance.

Panigale Cons:
1. In 10 years, I would probably rather own the D16RR.
2. Less exclusivity.
3. Wish I could think of more, but I choose this route, so I am probably biased ;)

If i can affort the Desmo, i would go for it in a heart beat, timeless design with un match charater. 1199 could be faster and more modern. But its like comparing hand fold highly crafted Katana and a hand gun...

Much rather have the 1199 over the Desmo. The Desmo is an awesome bike of course, but the Panigale is no doubt far more refined.

i have been thinking the same thing in 12 months the 1199 will be like a pair of tits every bitch has them .
and the way ducati have gone latly it will cost lot to get it right as they build them for the average knob to ride on the street .
i got a quote back to build a 1199 super sport bike 47,000 euro its a great price but for that i can have a Desmo D16RR with a set of 16.5 inch wheels and full race system and ecu . who really give a toss bout warrenty anyway .

i am starting to favor the Desmo idea more and more

Thanks Chris. If I'd go for the 1199S, I'm gonna order one with ABS, Termis, and carbon fiber upgrades. If I'd go for the Desmo, I'm putting 17" BST Carbon Fiber wheels and Race ECU. What do you think?

I totally agree. The Desmo being a prestige and the pleasure of riding/owning one is what keeps my Desmosedici passion alive.

I think so too. But it's hard to let the Desmo go. I need to weigh it more... I know I won't have any regret on either bike but I still have to choose.

For 12 months? That's torture. haha.. Before the 1199 Panigale was revealed, my sight was fixed on the Desmo alone. But after I saw the video about the Panigale, it impressed me alot. That's when my mind started go crazy.

Ducati 1199 Panigale - Troy Bayliss and Marinelli on the Mugello track! - YouTube - here's that video.

My local shop had a desmo in with engine problems. Although I understand the factory took care of in under warranty, the cost of a new engine was stunning, around thirty-five thousand dollars. As many parts are one-off, the maintainence costs could be heart-breaking. A major repair could cost more than the current $40,000 or so these bikes are now selling for.

WOW! That's mind blowing. But I don't believe that would be the case of every Desmo. I've read some owner reviews about the performance and the maintenance, every bike has it's problem. Probably depending on the user.

If you want a museum piece buy the D16RR. If you want a daily ride, buy the 1199.

Repair parts and bodywork are so outrageously priced, you will need deep pockets to have a D16RR. Look at bodywork prices alone. Panels cost over $3,000 for EACH piece.

There is no way I could justify the risk of owning D16RR.

if you CAN get your hand on one of the Desmo, do it, because if you change your mind, you can always swap that for a brand new 1199 S (or 2)
its not as easy the other way around!
