Desmo is a limited production close-to-race bike for the street; rare appeal of a unique V-4 is hard to beat. If you have the $$, go for it

D16RR vs 1199

I've had my Desmo since new and ride it all the time. Every single ride is a spine tingling adventure from the moment you hit the starter button! it's one pissed off angry beast, but the harder you push it, the better it gets. Pure pleasure on the track and street.

I only have 200 miles on my Panigale so far, and have only barely sampled it"s power. It feels smaller, more nimble, more civilized. Initial impressions are that it doesnt seem to have the same punch as the Desmo. The technology is very cool and it's very comfortable, you could easily ride it all day.

My two cents: You don't buy either of these to be practical, it's all about the visceral thrill. To that end, it's the Desmo hands down, That's the real E-Ticket ride. The Panigale is Dr. Jeckyl, the Desmo is Mr. Hyde. You already know deep down inside which one you really want.

Desmo will surely win when it comes to thrilling experience and pure pleasure. But in a battle of speed and power, which is superior?

I'm gonna order bikes mid-June or July. I'm going crazzy! I'm thinking of ordering 2 RRs. 1 in Red with race pipes and 1 in black with DP exhaust. Do you think this is a wise decision(if money is not an issue)?

That's like ordering yourself two portions of the same dinner at a resturant, more is less. If money is irrelevant, get one of each. Or, get one now enjoy it to its full potential and then get the other one later - double the fun.

I totally agree. The Desmo being a prestige and the pleasure of riding/owning one is what keeps my Desmosedici passion alive.

I got both bikes

the desmo is a limited production bike and it means parts can be a bit harder but definitely more expensive. I have just seen the d16rr a month ago and it still looks modern beside the 1199s. If I have an extra money lying around i will get the d16rr but for practical reasons the 1199s is the way to go ( if you are like me who has to work hard for money).

The Desmo is pretty much out of my budget so I can only choose the 1199s

I have the 16rr and I love it....for the track. A horror on bumpy roads, even when softened to the max,not very enjoyable, but that's not where it's intended to be ridden. To be honest,I was disappointed with the performance. Mate of mine has a 1198r and there wasn't much in it at the track down the straight. Given...it had only just been run in and was still a bit tight. The fuel mapping is is also very rich and is non adjustable, cant blame the factory for that though, imagine the warranty claims within the three year period when everybody leans the map right out.
I'd buy a low milage desmo 16 in mechanically good condition, privately to save some coin, and use that coin to buy some goodies. A custom pipe from race fit in the uk(sounds so much better than the factory unit)a complete set of carbon kevlar bodywork ( youll be happy you did if you crash it) set of custom rearsets from durbahn(not so much flex = even better feeling, different mounting points.)traction control unit and quickshifter. Competition systems in the uk has a desmosedici kit with an adjustable ecu unit etc but £9500 ouch. Nemesis has a tc unit and you can mate that with an evo quickshifter. Durbahn has a lot of tasty bits n pieces on his web site, check it out.
The panigale has alot of these features and more, without having to spend more money to step it up,and I bet you could set it up for road riding and enjoy it there more as well.
But I tell ya...when your belting the desmo16...it's totally horn and there is nothing like it!!
So.....a desmo16 with some tasty bits for the track, and a panigale for the road and track bloody " ell....what couple. Watch everyone drool..lol

Desmosedici is not for everyone

There are many pros and cons to either bike, but what you first have to establish is whether you are able to get a Desmo or not.

I own a 1198s and love that bike to bits, but my uncle has just bought the new panigale(not the s). I took it for a ride and it was pure porn, however he also owns the 2008 Desmosedici rr so I have ridden them both. The Desmo boasts more power and is an utter beast that roars like one I've never heard. Its more "man against beast" rather than man against computers.
Long story short the Panigale is more responsive and feels lighter and is better for the road. The Desom is very comfortable ( despite popular belief) on the track and is essentially a track bike. I would have the Desomo any day over the Panigale. It's more raw while the Panigale is more refined

Inorder to own a NEW Desmo you're more than likely required to own a panigale anyway. They get first priority. Even there you might struggle to get the 2012 Desmo. They only make ONE everyday.

Good luck in you choice though and trust me when I say any option is a good option:)

Desmosedici will always be more special. MGP racer to the street while the Panigale as awesome as it is - is the next iteration of the excellent line of Ducati superbikes. No shame on either front but the Desmo is truly special and will retain a special place in motorsports history. That said, living with a legend an Italian one at that, has its price. If not for the maintenance regime I'd have a Desmo now. There is a heavier price to pay for that exclusivity in the long run if you plan on actually riding the Desmo.

What ever happened to BlackRedNine? Did this person actually buy both a Desmosedici and 1199 or was it all BS?

an acquaintance of mine owns the #136 desmosidici, he wants to trade it with my pre ordered 1199r. I want to say yes since his bike has only ridden 2300kms. but I told myself "This guy is always in the dealer every time I go to look at the new bikes and the reason is the same. he is getting his desmo repaired, he is waiting forparts.. he is not ridding it"

If I am in the level where in I can afford a garage piece, I will get the desmosidici. And the forumer is right, ten years down the road, the desmo will be way more cooler than the Panigale. but I want to enjoy the bike now!! I want to enjoy it every week end, and I do not want to go to the dealers often. praying that the parts are already available.

but a part of me thinks that the trade is a very good deal. since I will not shell out additional cash.

Hmmmm nice problem to have, here are some mechanical facts, the desmo is expensive to service, know from experience, they do have some motor issues, mainly around rods and bearings... Again from experience...

The reality is the bike is a masterpiece of engineering, but can be unreliable and costly to keep well fettled, a warranty is worth so much when the bike you have spent your hard earned cash on is in the work shop with its motor in bits waiting for parts that cost as much as a small bike...

The 1199 is also a masterpiece of engineering, its got the potential to be faster on the road and track, it's a bast@rd to set up but rewarding once its right... If you are prepared to pay for the service costs, keep it fettled then the Desmo will be ok, just not as usable as the 1199...

Had a day racing against one at PI, unfortunately the owner put it in the kitty litter at Siberia, not a big crash, cost him the best part of 8,000 to fix though.

I've had a couple of super cars! They are great when they run, a pain in the ass when they don't, and if your paying finance for the privilege that's another aspect to consider, if its in the shop for a month or two and ur still paying finance, insurance and rego, it all adds up to the ownership experience.

Cash is king when ur buying a high performance vehicle, the Desmo will not depreciate as much...

Both very different to own, ride and live with...

Have fun

my 2 cents if its even worth it

1 i was at gas station riding with a bunch of my Harley friends. at the gas station there were a bunch of ducati guys. a bunch of 1098s and 1198s 1 desmo 1 ninja. Make a long story short we didnt leave for 30 min they were all about MY bike. I was like you have a desmo i should be looking at yours not you at mine.

Mark, you know I'll be adding the RR sooner or later to the stable!

Was getting the same reactions to the 1199 until I started riding the the Bayliss more often....then the crowd factor became almost embarrassing...

i would love a Desmo and i have my name down for a 1199R, the issue with the desmo is they are still very expensive at $45k+ from a dealer whereas i can get an R for $30k with warranty etc.

I would still prefer the desmo but at this point in time am not sure i could justify the extra $$$.

I am in a possession ob motorcycle
D16RR team version and Panigale S
if you compare the two motorcycle
I D16RR of 2010 I bought a new ga gp for emissions, I had to pay almost 5000 Euros
and I got the engine power and total uselessness on the street, specifically if you look at the street can not tell you much because I drive to the track,
on track engine brutal force, but it is quite difficult to drive and control
If we compare with Panigale technologically delayed several years,
the ride is harder than Panigale, harder on the hands, the only thing is for curves and bends on the outs quieter than 1199 who are interested in playing,
I think I'm generally Panigale replaced when the new model comes out and the D16 will remain not wait new model, ipratio the 1198s, 1198sp, and now even 1199s, 1199r waiting so we will see who will remain

rsr i know this is off topic but someone was asking about boots and i told them about the forma ice flow how good they are. I said that you had them too but they went with alpine star ones anyway.
