Buying the Tri now that the R is out is pretty much pointless, the R is the panigale to have period.

That is nonsense sir.

Think about it, what is the ONLY reason to buy a Tri?

- The "free" termi's ... err, NO.
- The Tricolore paint job ... err, YES.

I would even add that if the R & Tri were priced identically, many Tri owners would still buy a Tri and just bolt on the DP differences :p

The "R" looks simply stunning!!!!!!! I prefer the all red look they did with silver on the tank, few simple white stickers on the tail, front cowl, the Ducati Corse logo on the sides and the all blacked out wheels without the red pinstripe...gives it a more "werks" bike look...or shall I say an exotic red ferrari look....

Hmmmmm...will I buy it??? Hell yes!! If I could afford it...I would sell my "S" and get it....that's "IF"....but I cant at the moment :(...so I'll stick to my "S" instead. :D Damn...but I want one!!!! Talk about Ultimate Italian exotica for the road!

For sure the Tricolore is a fantastic bike. But for me, the paint job is just too much. the design screams "Look at Me, I am special.. oh please look at me.. hey you!!! look at me.. why aren'r you looking?!!!". When I first saw the Panigale, I wanted the S more than the Tricolore because the S is more subtle.

Now between the Tricolore's paintjob and the R's color scheme, I like the minimalistic aproach of the R more.

About bolting the difference, How much would it cost to bring the engine down to install the Ti Rods? I have to pay $$$ just to have my shims adjusted for the 848 so I imagine installing the rods will be costly. the Tricolore comes with exhaust silencers and up map but it is still not full exhaust. how much is the exhaust manifold plus the up map? around 1,800us$? how can you repogram the additional 500rpm limit? will you simply repogram the ecu to allow it to rev till 12,000rpm?

Again the tricolore is a very good bike(excellent if I may add). but the R is really a bargain. it will be cheaper to repaint the R to the Tricolore Paint scheme than to equip the Tricolore with a Full exhaust and Titanium con rods.

Ride safe.

All very valid points. You are also on the money re the tri special paint look-at-me factor ;)

I did however say DP bolt on differences, so excluding the mechanical goodies and just talking about CF bits and bobs.

IMO, at this price point, $$$ value doesn't really factor so much.

Either you buy an R, in all probability plus a few DP bits like foot pegs and levers, which gets you a very fast, mostly red Panigale.

OR, you buy a Tricolore, in all probability plus a lot of DP bits like foot pegs and levers plus CF, which gets you a very fast, very colourful Panigale.

OR, you buy an S, in all probability plus a lot of DP bits like foot pegs and levers plus CF, which gets you a very fast, red Panigale.

Small differences and personal preference at the end of the day, which is why I reject statements like the Tri is pointless now the R is out.

Im gonna say it, some, not all, bought the Tri because it was the most expensive 1199 on the market. Now that the R is a few dollars more, the Tri will not sell, and if you wait till 2014 you will get a good deal on a left over. I love my S, and if the chance to do it over again I prob would get the R because the cost of an S with an exhaust is soo close. Never will I buy a bike for a paintjob, that's what japanese bikes are for.

Anyone have any insight on production numbers for the R? Will it be limited production as in years past? If so, how many units?

i disagree with this, as much as i love the performance on the R, i would not buy it if i dont go to the track alot, all of the upgrade benefit could only be felt/used on the track to make a difference. where i need a street ride, the Tri is the one to go!

The engine is the same as a base. I beleive ecu does the 500 rpm boost, ti rods are for race longevity.

I'm not an expert but the ti rods are not for longevity, but for less weight. Less weight reduces inertia allowing the engine to go up the extra rpm's. Ducati could have gone the HP way, but the 500 rpm is a huge advantage, given the 1199r also has had the gearing lowered for better acceleration. Even though the top boost is 'only' 6hp, the 30+hp in the midrange, the lower gearing and the 500 rpm's make this bike really special.

The R looks like it's designed to make more peak hp for racing, at the expense of midrange. Hence the longer headers. I HIGHLY doubt it's making 30hp midrange over anyone's bike. Lower gearing will help it pull to the higher revs quicker, but that's about it.

The R uses the termi racing exhaust giving it those 30hp. The new akra exhaust is similar to the the R exhaust which too puts out about 25+hp in the mid range. I think Xbox posted the akra chart which shows the extra mid range.

I agree, all the benefits of the R is for the track. The light weight Ti rods which allows the the bike to rev higher, swing arm adjustment to customize the angle of the swing arm for specific tracks. You really won't benefit from it on the street but it will make one hell of a track bike.

I would buy a R for the track if Ducati would give the consumers an option not to put those electronics suspension on. I hate paying premium for a bike with Forks and suspension that needs to be replaced for the track, and the added weight of the Heavy LED lights and ABS. I guess they are ok for the streets but to me now that I think about it the 1199 R is an Oxymoron

I"ll stick with the base and add the stuff I need to be a street or track bike!

+1 Well said.

Also, the Tri is for those who love the paint scheme, great for some but not for everyone.

I checked with my shop, $1950 to swap rods. Then the rod cost and up map (if you could get them) Cetainly makes sense to put your S or Tri back to stock, i.e., take any items off you want on your R, sell it and buy the R.

Used S - $18K
R - $30K

So $12K or

Rods $6K
Flywheel $?
Adjustable swing $?
Upmap $? (avail?)
Race exhaust $? (avail?)

I assume you're going off the quote of the midrange making 15% more power. It's not 30 hp....that would be based on the peak flywheel hp #.

The 15% improvement is based upon the midrange flywheel #s.

Ah, I see where we differ. I dont think you'll see 30 other than the crank, over stock.

My full Termis gave maybe 2hp up top, but 12+rwhp all through the midrange. My guess is the 'new' exhaust will be the same in the middle, with a couple more hp up top.
