Gentlemen,

All of this hearsay regarding dyno results is comical. The 1199 is in a completely different league compared to the BMW. On the dyno, perhaps the two are roughly similar. I currently own both bikes and I assure you that both are obscenely fast - way faster than I need, way faster than I can handle.

The 1199 out classes the BMW in several areas. The 1199 causes complete sensory overload for it's rider. The machine is intensely beautiful, yet produces a brutally powerful, deep, rich exhaust note. The BMW pales in comparison.

The 1199 has the electronic package that lifts the bike to the next level. The ABS and TC systems are robust are adjustable on the fly. BMW - no. 1199's engine breaking control is sublime and very useful in the real world by all of us, adjustable on the fly, while riding. BMW - no. Ohlins suspension is also adjustable on the fly. BMW - no.

I love my S1000RR and will be keeping both bikes, but guys, come on now - the 1199 is in a different league all together. My sense is that both bikes perform roughly equivalently in straight line acceleration. I've owned my BMW for 2 years now and the 1199 for a week - I'll not be able to tap the full power of either bike, so this attribute is essentially meaningless for me, and I'll bet this is the situation for the majority of owners. The 1199 out classes in every other way.

Thanks for the info. I almost changed my mind and purchased a S1000RR but decided to stick with my first choice, the 1199.

Thanks, good ammo for me. I have a buddy in the process of buying an S1000rr. Now I can tell him, "I read something from guy who owns both, and he says . . .," haha.

I agree both are great, the dyno numbers matter little and the performance will never be tapped. But TBF most of this is aesthetic related IOW subjective and of course there is the new bike puppy love.

Everyone thinks their new love is the best, I know I've done the same thing. Not discounting this review, appreciate it all the same, but I would love to read this when you've had the Panigale for as long. Then we'd have the real comparison once the new-bike/love blinders are gone and living with it for a few yrs comes into play.

Hell even when I bought my GS500E I considered it for a time to be the perfect motorcycle.

Point well taken.

Deciding what bike of the two is the "better" is a subjective thing, different people value different things, so what is better or worse to you will be different for other people. MCN says in their recent literbike comparison that the 2012 S1000RR is a full 2 seconds a lap faster than the 1199 on track, these are expert riders on the same track at the same time, so I believe what they say has merit. Having said that I would still rather have the Ducati over the BMW any day.. because of what it is and what it represents. Like the OP said, it simply outclasses the BMW. However I can see how someone who spends a lot of time on track might feel the BMW is the better bike.

Bottom line, get the panigale! Both bikes are beautiful, ones a blonde ones a brunette or a redhead... Haha

I think the engineers also took into consideration of the ram air effect on the HP. All those false readings on the dyno while the bike is not moving really does not give the entire effect of air to gas ratio. Just like on the most expensive and sought after collectable cars that have the ram air effect also fetched the highest HP back in the muscle car days. Here is ducati's verbiage which I think lots of dyno prone people are forgetting about. When the bike is in action, this ram air acts more like a turbo or super charger.

Thoughts?
"The increased amount of air and fuel the engine can mix due to the larger diameter of intake valves is guaranteed by the new oval-sectioned throttle bodies, which compared to a 63.9 equivalent diameter as on the 1198 Testastretta Evoluzione has been increased to an incredible 67.5 mm. The throttle bodies are controlled by a full Ride-by-Wire system, each separate from the other and are fitted with 2 injectors each: the first is set below the throttle and feeds the engine in conditions of low load use, whereas the second is fitted above the throttle, is activated when the engine is given the command to unleash its maximum performance."

This states more HP and TQ because of the ram air effect.
