I recently purchased a 2014 1199. The bike has 2400 miles on it. I have noticed that every couple of start ups, it smokes, and smells of burning oil.

The dealer showed me notice from DNA about break in and oil consumtion, but I'm not sure if that still applies as the bike has more than 600 miles on it.

The bike has a couple of months of warranty remaining, so I wonder if I should get it in to the service department while it's still covered?

Thanks

Tony

How long has the bike been sitting when you start it up? It's smokier when staring up after it been sitting a few weeks. In any case, does the smoke go away after it warms up?

I happens at any given time, hot or cold. The bike hasn't sat for more than a day or two since I've gotten it.

After running for a little while, it does go away.

I have a 2014. Mine would smoke a little when it had less than 500 miles on it as the rings were seating.

I have 4200 miles on it now and it has not smoked since I got the break in oil out at 500 miles.

If yours has 2400 miles on it and still smokes, I would get that looked at. If mine is any indication, what you are seeing isn't normal.

Of course, mine never sits for more than 3 days without getting ridden.

I wouldn't worry. Mine smoked on startup, occasionally, when I got my 2012 last year. At the time it had 3k mile on it, now it's got 11k and I'm running thicker oil (20w50) which seems to have stopped the smoking and reduced it's oil drinking habit. It still likes a drink though

My opinion is :

I'd get it looked at by a good ducati dealer. get the fact that you had it looked at documented.

if in the future after you've run out of warranty it turns out there is a problem related to the smoke and consumption of oil then you'd be more likely to get a goodwill fix/help from DNA..

My 2015 smoked pretty bad after break in period. Used 3/4 a quart in 1200 miles. Blue smoke until it hit 110F. It never really quit until I redlined it a few times. it is still needing topped off after another 1000 or so.

My 2013 Base used to use a lot of oil and smoke.

I'm at ~16k now and it no longer does either.

The dealer I purchased the bike from and a very reputable dealer a couple of hours away have both suggested that the Rings have not been properly broken-in.

The former owner of the bike is 60 years old and it's believed that he didn't ride the bike very hard.

I have the good fortune of owning a dyno and I decided to hit the rollers with the hope to make the rings seal. I have a procedure that I normally do to break in a new motor.

The first few wide open throttle pulls we're very smoky and sooty, supporting the idea that the bike has not been ridden hard.

I'll keep an eye on things and hope that the issues are solved

Just to update, I have not seen any more smoke, so it seems that the rings just needed to be properly sealed.

I love that these bikes are essentially designed to be ridden hard.
