agree they are great till the engine blows up and they like doing that

In my experience, i disagree.

Never had a single issue with mine, and dont know of any other guys i race with that had engine issues.

The only ones i know of that had engine issues were those that tried to make them rev WAY too high, like 16-17k. They dont like that.

why would the suspension change it's not active.

I thought it just let you amend the settings electronically but it won't change on the move.

Yes it is active and it constantly changes as you ride based upon throttle input, brake pressure etc.

Yes, you do make changes electronically (even though we raced with it in Fixed mode, we still had to go into the menu to make changes). But you can put it in Dynamic and it alters the damping as you ride.

i ride with about 10 guys consistently and 6 of us have them, my engine just blew up a few weeks back at jennings i haven't taken the engine apart to look at it, my other friend has gone through quite a few engines over the years (racing). the rest have had no issues.

but they are a super bike i'm just pissed with it at the moment.

That really sucks, i feel for you. Nothing worse than a blown engine (except maybe a crashed bike).

Hey Chris.

Good to hear you're digging the 1299S. Such an awesome bike. I was blown away with it in street trim on track last year.

Curious to see what you think about the suspension in Active mode. I really liked it at Mid Ohio and Gingerman, but for some reason it just didn't seem to figure itself out at Grattan.

You running at Savannah this weekend?

good write up Chris... I've thought about going lighter spring in the rear of my 1199... the rear wear at Jennings was spot on! but I was leaving darkies EVERYWHERE! we softened it up as much as I felt comfortable with but ya know

Great to see you finally got out on it. You've almost had it for a year right? Lol. How close are the lap times on it compared to your r6. And even tho the 1299 is lighter. Does it feel lighter then he r6. I know the my 6 felt like a bicycle still compared to my 12.

I don't want to derail Chris's thread, but I noticed about a year ago that a ton of the members here are 675 owners as well. I might start another thread in the appropriate sub-forum. I'll be needing some 675R info soon.

I've always tried to have one nice street bike that occasional saw track duty and one full time track bike. The street bike was a Buell and track whore Gixxer 600, until I got the Pani. I'm a firm believer in "don't bring it unless you're ok with leaving it in the dumpster".

I'm not ready to throw the Pani away so another track bike was a must. Thanks for the update Chris....don't forget I still have dibs on the R6.

Thanks. :)

It really is an awesome bike. We are making tweaks here and there as can be expected, but I am really surprised at how great it worked right out of the box.

I wont mess around with the DES too much when we go back because it will be a race-practice day with short sessions. I will try it, but I wont spend too much time on it. I will wait till a track day weekend when I am coaching in Advanced and play with it a lot then.

I had planned on being at Roebling, but had to come to work. :(

It would be worth a shot. The stiffer rear springs felt "ok", but damn it was spinning a lot. The rear wear was spot on, as in perfect....but then we realized it was because I was sitting at the top of the stroke and spinning so much.

Once he changed the rear spring and softened the rear up, it would load up and eat and drive grip improved a lot.

Jennings is abrasive like Tally. If your rear wear is PERFECT there...as in too good...you might be experiencing the same thing.

I cant wait to get the Duc to Jennings. Jennings is my best track. I set my personal-best on the RSV4 there (1:16.9), the Duc is lighter, faster and handles better. I cant wait to see what it can do.

Yes and no. It was ordered a year ago, then it came in and D&D took it out of the crate and build it into a race bike. That took some time because we were waiting on some parts and stuff like that. Then it had to go to Livengood for tuning. By that time the season was close to the end.

It is hard to explain. It kinda feels lighter than the R6, but it has so much torque so riding it is still challenging. But it feels like a toy compared to the RSV4, that bike is SO heavy.

Nice work Chris . I got my 1299 out for its first race weekend next week . Its a track I like I'm going to be curious in my times compared to the previous 1199R bike .
I actually really dig this Mupp suspension in this new bike so I'm hoping that will play a big part if any .

Thanks, and you were right regarding the rear shock. I told my guy what you said prior to going down there so he brought 3 different rear springs for the weekend. I am glad he did. So thanks for that.

Good luck next weekend.

Yeah, it was spot on for sure I was no where near your pace but run 1:23.×× all day on the last day and it still looked great.. I'll deff swap the rear and see what we can do

:23's is a quick pace, if your rear was that great after 2 days at Jennings at that pace, you might very well be at the top of the stroke and spinning a good bit.

For the record, I can't run that PB pace consistently. I set that PB during a JDSA standalone weekend. The students were on break and me and Jason had been playing around and he was showing me some tricks and stuff.

I went into the pits and put on a brand new rear tire for the sole purpose of setting a PB. JD gave me a tow for a lap and then pulled to the side, then I gave it all I had for one lap, then I pitted. So it was a conscious effort to set a 1-lap PB.

The RSV4 is so heavy and you wouldn't believe the effort it took to throw it around that tight back section while trying to set that PB. Not to mention that I felt like I was on the limit everywhere. It felt like the bike wasn't truly hooked up the entire lap, except for maybe on the straights. There is no way in hell I could keep that pace for the duration of a race without making some changes/improvements (and I wasn't training as hard back then, so personal improvements would have to be made too).

How close were your lap times for comparison same from the 6 to the 1299?

I was 0.7sec quicker on the R6.

BUT, TalladegaGP is a very short track (1.6mi). It is not a "Liter bike track". I think top speed is somewhere in the 130's or so. I fully expected to be quicker on the R6. Especially when you consider that was my first weekend on the 1299S and I have been on the R6 for 2 years.

You also have to consider my R6 is a full blown Superbike. It puts down more power than a SS built 750, has forged Marchesini wheels, full Brembo braking system, etc. It is a beast. So to be within 1sec of my R6 times in my first weekend on the Panigale, that says a lot.

And we are still working on setup, haven't played with some of the electronics, etc. There is still loads of potential to unlock. I am sure I will be laying down some PB's on the Duc before the season is over.

Yeah but you say your 12 is lighter, feels slighter and it has more power everywhere as opposed to the r6. So fully built r6 or not, it shows how great 600s are. I'm just saying because I feel my 2012 r6 was the best bike at the track. Better then the 1299.

600's are great for sure. No denying that. But I have no doubts I will be faster on the 1299S everywhere, even the tighter tracks, once I get used to it and we get it fully dialed in.

We have spent 2 years on that R6 and have it working perfectly and it puts over 140hp to the rear wheel. It isn't a typical "600".

I think me being within 0.7sec of my R6 times, on a track that is only 1.6mi long, in my very first weekend on the Duc, says much more for how great the 1299S is than it does for how good 600's are.

The thing is, it isn't just about lap times. Trying to race against liter bikes on a 600 is aggravating as hell. You might make up a little bit of time on corner entry, but then you lose it on the straights. Making a pass requires a dive-bomb move from way back...and then you have to hope you can still make apex...and then hope you don't get passed back on the next straight.

If we are talking about qualifying on an empty track, sure. But trying to race against 1000s on my R6, regardless of how badass it is, leads to a lot of headaches.
