14T Sprocket report

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

So, the rain has cleared out and I took her for a ride today... 47 degrees, but sunny and mostly dry roads.. BONKERS, BANNANAS, LOONY TUNES.. Makes 2nd gear, basically a Roadrunner/Wiley Coyote ACME cartoon of a gear, it Just reaches for the sky instantly and is basically of no use whatsoever.:eek:

Lucky for me, my local track is all 3rd, 4th and 5th gear and so, I think it will be spot on for Thunderhill.

Second gear is just hysterically funny now. :D:D

My point is still valid though.. 6th gear is geared too high on the 1299, it's a bit better on the R model.

Cheers and Merry Christmas. Thanks for all your contributions to the Forum this year, you always have great stuff to add to the conversations.

Oh yeah for sure, no doubt. We went +2 on the rear on my race bike immediately. All Liter bikes are geared way too tall stock IMO. I was -1/+1 on the RSV4 at most tracks and -1/+2 on the R1.

Cheers. Hope to add more next year as I'm chasing some championships and learning more about the 1299. I'll pass on whatever may help others.

Happy Holidays. :)

Just to let you know. I ordered 14T front sprocket from my dealer. They said that they don't have it. Ducati factory had even 13T sprockets, but they've caused numerous drive shaft breaks, so the factory is no longer selling anything but 15T sprockets and do not recommend smaller ones.

The torque has been too much for the shaft. I do not know how big risk it is, but that is what I was told today.

I think the better solution from a technical perspective is a 15/41 gearing. A 41 OEM sprocket is available (from Panigale R). Only issue compared to 14/39 is a longer chain is needed.

Gearing is slightly longer than with 14/39, but still 5 % shorter than OEM:

OEM: 15/39: 2.600
15/41: 2.733 (-5.1%)
14/39: 2.786 (-7.15%)

I ride 15/41 from beginning (first 1199S, now 1299S), and I think it's the best gearing for country roads and not too short for high speed driving.

I'm not sure I agree with the logic. Lower gearing can actually have the opposite effect. The engine puts out X amount of torque regardless of the gear. The shaft you are referring to is not technically a drive shaft, it's an output shaft from the transmission. It is seeing the full torque of the engine combined with the gearing effect from the transmission, not the sprocket. A taller front sprocket makes the bike more resistant to acceleration and therefor actually puts more load on that shaft.

I'm not a mechanical engineer and I can see two sides to my own theory, but either way it's hard to imagine that there is so little margin of error in the strength of the shaft. It could simply be that people who put w lower gear on the bike are more likely to "abuse" the bike more.

^ I have to say that I don't yet have my own opinion. I just shared what I was told by local dealer. It just seems funny if Ducati doesn't sell 14T, since aftermarket is full of sprockets in various sizes. To avoid warranty claim if the shaft breaks with 14T?

In The Rear!

HOLY SMOKES 80Shilling!

Now THAT is a serious data chart right there pal!

Happy to hear you guys got good results off the front sprocket change and all.
On the other hand I went with a REAR sprocket change instead and some additional "bling factor" as well. This seemed to give me some of the seriously missing low end torque I had so much of on my previous ride - the 1198s Corse Limited Edition which to this day I often regret in a number of ways!

Stay safe out there no matter WHAT sprocket ya have!

That's good to hear that you're recovering some of that torque. I'm waiting on my new sprockets to come in.

Also, I have about 12.5k miles on the stock sprockets, I decided to go ahead and get a fresh front sprocket as well for even wear... did I just waste money because I could of used the front still, or was this actually a good move?
