Don't forget guys, the R is a homologation model for WSBK. Ducati needs to check the box, showing they built the minimum number of models required within the specified time-frame. They can claim whatever model year they want on it as long as it meets the above criteria.
I speculate the '14 is virtually identical hardware, with newer revs of parts that had issues, and stuff R&D deemed production ready after the '13 roll-out, such as new software revs, etc. So think '13 with refinements solving known issues and issues that popped up once they started getting customer/dealer feedback.
Regarding dealer setup with the R, I can only offer my personal experience with Ducati Santa Barbara. When the bike arrived I was asked how I wanted it configured, for track or street. Street being- standard windscreen, mirrors mounted, and cat equipped exhaust. Track outfitted being- large windscreen, mirror block-offs, full Termis, and cowling extensions. They didn't care how I wanted it other than not riding off with it if it was not street legal which makes sense for them. I was planning on transporting it anyway. All the above items were all just part of dealer setup for a model that comes with optional equipment and didn't command any additional costs other than the cost of admission (additional expense over S) for buying the R.
