What's the internal difference between 15/16 R and 1199SL engine?
here ya go ,according to this bloke there is .... all difference,i keep my 15 R at the low level it has 12000k on it and it doesnt use any oil, i change it at 3000km intervals and i use shell advanced as recommended,i dont ride it on the track.

So, my 2015 1199r is mostly for the track. I guess I'll be dealing with top end rebuilds every 3000 miles or so. I'm hoping that I can just have to replace the rings on the pistons only. I checked on the head gasket and it's a whopping over $300 per head gasket! Must be thinner compared to the regular 1199's which shows just over $100 per head gasket.

Who is this bloke???

His from ducati, when new models came out ducati techs teach the mechanics world wide on the new models.

It may be elective though because a ducati dealership opened up close by and they had no clue. All oil filters on a ducati are the same, belts will need changing on the panigale. Etc they were only in business for 6months before changing to a triumph dealership.

Unlike jap bikes with a sink or swim approach and try keep the layout roughly the same.

This is what pisses me off owning a ducati the parts are expensive, it’s no fun working on a bike when it costs so much.

Sleeves and rings. One days work if you're experienced, clear the weekend if you're handy, let someone else do it if you're not sure if your tool kit is really complete. Also check the ring grooves and skirt, mine was worn so the pistons were changed as well

It would be really nice if you could do how to videos on youtube, wish there was more videos like delboy on panigales or motorcycle engines in general.

Not just the simple stuff

Just FYI:

I've had 2 rebuilds on a 2015 R (2400 miles & 6400 miles) due to excessive blow by into the air box and draining out thru the drain tube - both times required new sleeves, pistons & rings....after 11,000 miles it required another rebuild, due to the same issue - I have since moved on to a 1299SL :)

you definitely used R like it should 11k +. awesome except the rebuilds.

Track racing aside, the service requirements are the same any othe Panis. So, if engine issues happenning for regular street use, I surmise that there is a quality issue with the individual unit. To need to mod or add something should not be the solution, but a stopgap measure at best. JMO

Not saying its the case with any of the bikes in this thread, but some are ridden very
unsympathetically and are regularly bounced off the limiter etc during the thrapings on track.

Regardless off how sturdy the design and build is, the engines aint designed to be treat
like that without a heavier maintenance budget.

My personal experience from all of my 30+ bikes over the years (enduro, supermotos, road and track bikes) is that I have never an engine let go or needed to go through a major rebuild prematurely, yet friends around me running similar bikes and pace would have a failure every season. I'm sure I will get bitten eventually, but it must be a little to do with TLC for the machinery.

Two ring pistons are meant for the track not high milage commutes............. There's a reason why Ducati won't give you an extended warranty on this bike.

In Ducati's defence they have never tried to market this thing as anything but an ultimate track experience. If you were expecting different then you have the wrong machine.

Absolutely they market it as such...but if ridden as marketed (on the track)...your warranty is voided (speaking from experience).

Interesting. Its not surprising you said that.

If that is what they are going with, how do they know you were tracking? No where in their websites says such. Do you mean Racing or just any track days?

There is a video from US CEO on interview of how Ducati should be used in Tracks. I saved it. lol.

Ducati (dealer and country distributor) are well aware I track my R. I have had normal
warranty treatment in all cases. My 15 bike was even exchanged for a 16 model after
a year of electrical gremlins. Apart from grenading a motor, I can't see what they would
knock back.

90% of the time, your relationship with your dealership is more important than any
small print.

In the pic they sent in with the warranty request the bike in was in track fairings. The dealer showed me DNA’s response...”The bike has been modified for track use and therefore we are denying the claim.” I have a great relationship with the dealer...bought several bikes from them. They wanted 23k to rebuild the engine. We built it better...for less.

This was covered in the past. There is verbiage in the warranty that says in effect that track use voids the warranty.

For the record, Ducati does market it as a durable street machine, with engineering to achieve service intervals like the rest of the Pani's. They advertise this online and on their brochures for the R. Absolutely, the R is designed and built to withstand normal use like any other Ducati. As for extended warranty, I have one, just not the EverRed. but its the same extended warranty and at comparable warranty cost as my other machines. I have good vibes with my R, it has had less issues than my '13 Pani S and is much more refined. I ride mine street, rather conservatively and it works like a charm. Low speed smoothness is not lacking on the R. I putt around parking lots and do U-turns like any other superbike or streetbike. I must be lucky as I haven't experienced any smoothness problems, the quickshift is the best I have experienced. It handles like a razor. JMO, YMMV.
