The problem is always the same. Too few prototypes were built and tested prior to release so the missed the issue. Now it's going to cost them some multiple of what it would have cost to build more prototypes. Everybody on a motorcycle design team should get a prototype to live with before release IMHO. One of my favorite recalls was the SSSA spindle on the 916. The error was so obvious (no radius where the spindle changed diameters, classic stress concentration) one wonders if anybody ever really reviewed the design.
