230HP??? Yikes!!!

Its still ugly as hell though. I used to work for Yamaha, and owned two, and loved them. But since they went to this current look in 2009 i've hated it with a passion. They should implement some of the R6 design into the R1 as I think its a much better looking bike

Yes, the R1 in street trim is so ugly. It's tied with the BMW S1000RR for the top ugly award! Although, in race trim both bikes look alright. As far as 230hp for the 2015 R1 in stock trim, I will believe it when I see it. It's not that it's not possible, it is that it won't be very reliable working so hard on stock engine.

Time for Ducati to launch AUDI's TFSI technology with boost and direct injection

I bet they're already working on this.

One way to generate some buzz around the brand. So many years of same old boring R1. What better way yo attract people's attention to a horsepower beast? It won't be 240hp but it's a great way to get people to start talkin about it. It will probably be in the 200hp range.

My guess is that's in Superstock race trim at the crank. which would be possible IMHO. The other article I saw on the subject mentioned 200hp for the normal model and 230 for a special edition that was to rival the SL.

Love to see the HP wars evolve! The hype will sell some bikes for sure, but I couldn't care less about raw power numbers when buying a bike myself. I want handling, light weight, good looks and then raw power. The HP4 could be lighter and corner sharper than the Panigale and I'd still stick with what I have. :)

In 2, 3 maybe even 5 years, people will still gawk at the Panigale when I stop for gas..every damn time. Never seen anyone do that to any of the Japanese bikes I've owned (zx10r, zx636, gsxr750). I don't care about that to feed my ego, it's more that people who don't ride still recognize awesome when they see it.

I hear Ducati is coming with 1199 Superleggera "R" not the base model 1199 Superleggera the "R" model for racing
Way cooler than 1199 Superleggera Base model

I don't like the base I like the R

All I know is the R1 (as of today) is as wide (if not wider) as that fat f*** Michael Moore. Some like a wide bike, not me. I was beyond tempted to pickup a 1098R or 1198R that were on ebay quite some time ago but I couldn't stand the additional width. Love my 'thin' Panigale.

Lol, at 6' 3", I definitely like a wider tank and some fairing to tuck under. R1's typically don't have much fairing to tuck under but what some call a wide tank feels just right to me.

This is great news, lately I have read so many articles stating that the motorcycle market is shrinking but I guess this is not the case since manufacturers are coming out with new and exciting bikes.

Even if I am a Ducati fan, I am very excited with what Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki has to offer. all three companies are rumoured to release their new liter bikes next year. and guess what, an all new hayabusa will also be released next year rumored to be sporting a 1500cc engine.

i guess when yamaha makes a bike and has so long to develop it they actually want to be better than what is out there now. unlike ducati who had time to develop the 1199 to be better than the s1000rr but blew it and still cant best the s1000rr.

i guess thats how audi does it the new rs5 is no better than the old m3 and they had 3 years to study it. now the new m4/m3 is out and audi is getting smashed again.

What criteria are you using to say that the RS5 isn't better than the old M3? Just raw performance numbers or the overall vehicle? These days the majority of "M" and "RS" car buyers aren't enthusiast. They really just want the badge and cars with styling/features to show off. The RS5 is a great option for someone wanting AWD and sporty handling. IMO, the design goals of the cars are different so I have a hard time saying one is better than the other. I had a R8 V10 and loved it... when the warranty was about to expire I got a F13 M6 and hated it. I knew the new M6 was heavy, but I never thought RWD and 570hp could be so boring! BMW doesn't make anything to rival the driving experience of the R8 or even Mercedes SLS. Audi isn't exactly hurting when it comes to sales so I don't think they're getting "smashed" by BMW. :D

I'm not brand loyal for cars or bikes. I like the new M4, but I don't see it as anything Audi will struggle to respond to.

In fairness, Mark's comments were much more apples against apples, well 4-seat coupe against coupe.

I doubt you even thought the M6 would hold a candle to the v10 R8

first i didnt say rs5 vs m6 or anything like that. i also did not state a thing about an r8v10 or the sls. i said the rs5 cant beat the old v8 2008 - 2013 m3 and they had 3 years to study the king. the numbers prove it. top gear proves it and everybody else knows this. as for my personal opinion i had an m3 and now i have a worked 335is and no s5 s4 or rs 4 or rs 5 can touch it. as far as the r8 v10 goes car is basically the lambo. i said the m3/4 smokes the rs5 every single time. i wasnt comparing the m3/m4 to the baby lambo or an sls which are 200k +cars please stop it with that

I asked you what criteria you were using to compare the RS5 to the M3. If you're just comparing raw performance numbers that's great, but the vast majority of buyers do not care about that. It's the subjective things that are behind why most buyers are purchasing one over the other. That said, in the 2013 C&D Lightning Lap test the RS5 had a quicker time than both the M6 and M5 (I'm not sure why the M3 wasn't included) and both those cars have posted quicker laps than the M3.

Lightning Lap 2013: Hot Cars, Hot Track, Hot Laps - - Car and Driver

Top Gear proves it? Lol... an entertainment show is where you get your facts? I wasn't really comparing the R8 to the M3. You said BMW is "smashing" Audi and I was pointing out that isn't really the case as Audi has cars that provide a driving experience BMW isn't touching yet. Hell, even the RS7 vs M6 Gran Coupe.

M3 -- RS4 -- C63AMG

RS5 -- M6 -- ?

apples and oranges.

i'd buy an audi over every beemer, my bud Walter works in Quality for BMW and he's embarrassed that they start rusting after 2 months out in the lot. (saving money on fasteners) he even wrote a letter to the board, but they care more about shareholders.

i thought this was bike forum.

It's great Yamaha is finally revising their R1, long overdue. I had an R6 before, 33k miles and zero problem, all i needed was oil and tires, Yamaha make great bikes. Not a fan of the R1's bulkiness, but people who rode the bike loves the engine, the crossplane + big bang firing order is addicting. The JapBig4 keep the Italians in check, force Ducati to keep pushing the envelop and make sure premium they charge isn't always on looks alone. I like it.
