42 tooth sprocket causing issue?

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I have a correction. It is the ducati BBS Black Box System that has failed. I just got off the phone with the dealership again and they are feeding me some lines about the gearing making the BBS overwork itself and overheat and fail. I'm trying to get them to put it all in writing and the exact reason for the failure.

The reason I ask is, as with all electronics, heat will kill it. The termis come with a BBS heat shield, it's very important to have that installed or the BBS gets cooked. The sprocket certainly isn't the cause.

So your "ECU" couldn't keep up with the extra RPMs and fried itself? Sounds like a scene from a 1970s Bond film.

Send an email to Ducati NA. Then your email will be sent up to Ducati Italy. Somewhere in the form it asks you your dealer so make sure you put their name in. The email address is linked on the ducati website.

Ya that dealer is shady.

Wow this is some serious BS.

You're a customer who wants services and would pay for them.
u.

That is probably what they want him to do...pay for the service.

If you can, find another dealer. They should honour the warranty, right? (i'm not sure, I don't live in the USA)

I am always wary of insulting the chef while he is cooking my food. He might spit in it before sending it my way with smiles.
Once I finish eating, though, all game is on :)

What does the BBS heat sheild look like? I have the slip-ons, and want to make sure it's installed.....

R

It's a aluminum face, fiberglass buffer and adhesive backing which is stuck on the bottom of the BBS. You could buy similar stuff online if you're worried. I don't believe it comes with the slip-on, as it retains the factory exhaust heat shield.

My main issue right now is them telling me it's not a warranty issue because my sprocket change is what caused the issue. I asked them if they want me to pay for something that I don't believe is an issue I caused, I want , in writing, how the sprocket changed messed up the BBS in detail and why it's not a warranty issue. My service advisor told me that Ducati is not going to put anything in writing as to why it's not going to be warrantied. He said Ducati won't even call me. I asked if it was possible for the local Ducati representative to call me and he said that wasn't possible either.

Go to Ducati USA web site, click on customer service, then at the bottom of the page it ask if you did not see any answers above click the contact form.

Fill out the contact form stating your problem and send it off and wait for an answer. Tell them everything including what the dealer has said to you about contacting regional service manager.

From everything you are saying it sounds like the wiring harness has a short against the frame. This wiring harness plugs into the BBS. When they move it around the problem disappears. After you ride it a while and hit a bump the short comes back and you now have the problem again. It is hard to find as it is on the back side of the harness and you cannot see it on the bike. Ducati knows of this problem.

If this fails get a lawyer and file a law suit against Ducati USA. This will get their attention as now they must prove the sprocket change caused the problem which it did not.

The BBS is about $2000 to replace and once it has been put on the bike it marries to the bike and that bike only. When it is replaced with a new one and it is determined that the old one is still good it is worthless for any other bike.

They should have contacted NA and asked what to do and gotten the ok to do the BBS exchange. Since the problem is now back I am sure Ducati NA knows of the problem. If they do not this would explain the reluctance of the dealer to contact Ducati NA.

I am sure the contact form in customer service will get to the bottom of the problem.

If not hire a lawyer and get your money back from Ducati via "Lemon Law" since it has been in 4 times for the same problem. I don't know how long it has to be in the shop but here it is 60 days. Contact a Lemon Lawyer and tell him your story and he will tell you if you have a case or not. Can find them on line.

Ditto change dealers ASAP you have no trust or faith in yr dealer so time to move on
Very frustrating when yr bike isn't running well or not at all.
Had several warranty issues myself lately including a new wiring loom as the plug and play was burnt ou!!
Good luck

I filled out the contact form on a Sunday, and got a phone call from Italy on Monday. I was shocked at how fast they got back to me.

Unless you missed something on the sprocket install, you should be ok. Ducati will talk to that dealer and reverse their decision.

Since this is the fourth? time they are changing your BBS, they are probably just covering their arses for a bad install on their part.

Good luck !

Just put back to stock and take back to the dealer, calling name to the dealer is not going to help you. You want to keep a good relationship unless you have another dealer around.

With three lousy dealers I have been to they should be a named and shamed those dealers who abuse us!
