I’m coming from the Shoei X-Spirit 3, which is a great fit. My head measures just under 58cm. I tried the ML in a shop and it was a good fit but it felt like there was room to go down to MS, so I ordered in that size, this being the recommended size for my head measurement.

It requires quite an effort to squeeze my head into the opening but I can get it on. It feels a bit tight across the forehead but is otherwise a good fit. Cheek pads seem to be good and I assume there will be some relaxing of those over time.

Can anyone confirm that the pads around the forehead relax a bit over time? Are there adjustments that can be made that would release just a little bit of pressure? Perhaps changing the position of the pads on the crown would raise or lower the padding around the forehead a bit in relation to the shell? By this I mean perhaps moving the padding on the top would raise the helmet slightly and move my forehead to a slightly wider part of the shell? Obviously I can try this but I thought I would ask the forum before buggering about with it. My head is a bit flat on top (they probably dropped me as a child), so that might have some impact on the fit. it’s fine in the Shoei though but I couldn’t seem to find a direct comparison of fit and all I found seemed to indicate that both helmets were designed for intermediate oval. I take medium in the Shoei.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on this. The ML did feel ok but I know how much padding can relax and I felt it would be just a little bit loose after a while. The MS feels very close to being a good fit and hopefully the padding will relax just enough to make it perfect, but I’d appreciate any thoughts on this from those with experience. I’m looking to buy another one in plain carbon to have it custom painted and so I want to ensure that I’m getting the correct size. Visibility seems great, the visor mechanism is excellent and I like the Soleluna 2021 style.

Why did you want to switch if the Shoei was a great fit, and by the sound of it the AGV is not?

I didn’t say I was switching - it’s another helmet! Surely you don’t think just one helmet is enough…;) I’ll be getting another helmet as well for a custom design.

I saw some good discounts on these helmets as they are clearing stock to make way for the new versions (same but different ECE standard) and so I thought I’d try one as I’ve not had AGV before - I used Arai years ago and last year got a Shoei X-Spirit 3, which I much prefer to Arai (much better visibility). Visibility is really great on the AGV and the visor seems good as well (the mechanism for removing the visor is even easier to use than the Shoei).

The opening is a tight squeeze to get it on but that’s not really an issue as long as the fit ends up ok when it’s on.

I can still get a couple of fingers up the side to flatten my ears back down and I expect a helmet to be tighter when new than it becomes when it has been used a bit. I haven’t had AGV before and so I don’t know if the padding relaxes the same amount as the Shoei does. Apparently the MS has a different shell size to the ML and L, which share the same shell. This would explain the noticeable difference in getting the helmet on.

Gotcha. I’ve tried several AGV helmets, but never found a decent fit, so it’s a no go for me. I wear a Shoei X-Spirit 3 as well, and love it. Fits me just right and is very comfortable.

Going from the Arai to the X-Spirit 3 was great and I’m glad I tried something other than Arai - the Shoei was so much better, particularly in terms of visibility, and it does fit me very well. You get more visor positions than the AGV’s up (and about to come down) or down.

The padding on the AGV is very easy to remove and put back in - I’ve just done it about 8 times… 🫣 It’s getting easier to put the helmet on and take if off after doing it numerous times as well.

I have adjusted the 3 top bits of padding to a medium-wide setting at the front and medium-narrow at the back and this has removed the pressure points that were previously obvious. There’s a surprising amount of adjustment available and it’s more noticeable than I expected.

Maybe I’ll wear it while walking the dog and going shopping to break it in…

I was going to get the X-SPR Pro that’s just come out but the AGV was about the same price so I thought why not give it a go. My head size is definitely toward the upper limit for MS but I expect it will work out fine, although I don’t think I’ll know for sure until I’ve ridden around with it for a while as it’s a new helmet with new padding.

I’m making full use of forums and online shopping while I wait for riding weather to return… 🤣

I would never go for a helmet which does not feel good from the get go. I had the AGV GP R in the past and now have the RR. IMHO, the fit does not change. If there are pressure points now, this will continue. My helmet feels pretty much the same after years of use and I don't feel the pads relax much over time.

Thanks for the feedback.

It’s interesting that you don’t feel the pads have relaxed much over years of use as I’ve never known a helmet where the pads have not relaxed a bit. Perhaps you prefer a more relaxed fit from the start, whereas I like it to feel quite snug? We might have a different idea about the fit we want or describe it differently. If the fit isn’t snug to begin with then the pads wouldn’t relax as much as there’s less pressure on them. Just a thought!

In all honestly, very little is needed to make it a perfect snug fit and adjustment of the top pads has meant that there are no particular pressure points, as I mentioned above. It will be interesting to see if it beds in like my Shoei has (at first I kept biting the inside of my cheek due to the pressure from the cheek pads but that diminished over time, whereas the cheek pads on the AGV are not doing this yet they apply sufficient pressure).

I recently faced the same dilemma. Head size just under 58 (average 57.8 with multiple measurements). Wear a medium Arai. Ordered a MS Pista and found it a bit tight. Could have dealt with the crown fit and mild forehead pressure (20-30 minute track sessions only), but didn’t like the chin bar being so close to my lips - could kiss it easily (felt claustrophobic).

Concerned that the proximity to the chin bar might be a safety issue in an accident, I ordered a ML figuring I’d compare them b2b and keep the better fitting. The ML is a little looser than I’d prefer (I must be right between sizes), but confirmed for me that the MS chin bar was indeed too close. I used the included supplemental padding to build up the cheek pads, and that seems to have snugged it up enough to fit well.

Thanks for that.

I don’t have the chin bar issue - that definitely would have been a concern. How long have you had the ML now and has it maintained it’s fit? It’s good that they come with the extra padding and I like the way the primary padding is designed.

I expect I could do the same as you and I might see if I can try the ML size again (I think the new ones just have medium and large now), although I do think the MS should just about work for me.

Oh, are the changing the sizes now?

I’ve only had the helmet for a month - haven’t ridden in it yet. B2B comparison is ideal if you can do it, but realistically, either would probably serve us fine and we’re likely making more than necessary of a relatively small difference. :)

I don't think there is enough padding on the crown to loosen over time.
Maybe the velcro pads are to blame for the pressure points? I know I had issues with mine and moving them near the upper edge solved my problem.
Also, the GP R (yup, it does fit into the GP RR) crown is one piece, without velcro, and that maybe is more comfortable to wear.

Good point @toshy regarding there not being sufficient padding to loosen noticeable. I’ll assume that any relaxing of the padding will be so little as to be irrelevant. 👍

I just tried it again and compared it to my Shoei. The AGV is slightly tighter on the temple when pulling it on but not by as much as I thought. The Shoei feels like it’s maybe a bit more padded around the contact areas when pushing my head through the opening and I think the opening on the AGV is narrower. It takes a fraction more effort to put the AGV on but it actually doesn’t feel much different across the forehead and temple in terms of snugness once it’s on - perhaps the Shoei is a little bit more plush, although it’s not new and that could make a difference, or a bit more padded but I think the fit is probably similar in terms of snugness.

AGV’s ML uses the same shell as their L, whereas the MS uses a smaller shell, so the ML would be a lot easier to put on and the size difference must be created internally. I always like a nice tight fit with a helmet but obviously not so much that it’s uncomfortable or a distraction.

It definitely feels like I have a greater field of vision from the AGV and the top of the viewport on the AGV is noticeably higher on my forehead (and I have the Shoei set to give the maximum visibility looking up).

There aren’t any ‘hot spots’ in terms of pressure points - the pressure is even around the head once it’s on. I think it’s going to be ok but of course I’ll only know with certainty once I’ve gone for some rides in it and spent some time wearing it. With the Shoei, if I just put it on in the house I can feel that I’m wearing it - it’s a snug fit - but I don’t notice that when I’m riding with it and it’s not a distraction.

I think the MS will be fine but I’ll also try the ML (or M in the ‘new’ style) when I’m next near a shop that has them just to remind myself what that size feels like.

@Val213 I wonder when they’ll be coming out and what the price point will be. Can’t wait for the racing season to start!
