Another quick review of the 1199 - Bimmer killer?

MOTODUC... NOT the answer. When I mentioned BMW perhaps losing the #1 spot, it had nothing to do with HP or top-end speed, but EVERYTHING to do with the overall impression of the bike. You're still overly focused on terminal speed.

Good to hear you have a deposit on one though...

Trinity636, when you say: "Perhaps the BMW will lose its #1 spot..." It is implied that you are referring to the BMW as being the king of power (highest power to weight ratio, pre-Panigale), 0-60 and 1/4 mile trap times being the best in the liter class. The BMW represents, POWER SUPREME!!!:D, and let me tell you, the BMWs' top heavy power band hits with such aggressive fervor, that if you are not paying attention, you may dislocate your shoulders:eek:...LOL!!!
We also know, however, that the BMW is one of the worst handling bikes. So much so that the factory upgraded the 2012 S1000RRs' firm-ware to make the power more usable, and changed the geometry to improve the handling. Actually, it would be cheaper for me to up grade my 2010 to the 2012 S1000RR, but I'm after a more rewarding riding experience- Even if it means getting a $30,000 upgrade-PANIGALE it is...!!!

hmm... Wonder how many flames you would get if you posted that the best upgrade for a '10 S1000RR was a Panigale, on a S1000RR forum? :)

Lol, the panigale better live up to its name and beat s1 in all their reviews then! hahahha

Didn't mean for people to take it that way. Having a V-twin, I know that its very unlikely to equal that "top-end hit" of an I-4. I know my '07 1098 (or even the 1198), could not keep up to my ZX-10, let alone the S1000RR in straight line speed. Seems like the "total package" on the 1199 will put it out in front... at least that's what initial reports are indicating. Although these positive reviews are nice, in the end, I'm really not overly concerned with the write ups. It always comes down to the personal likes/connection one has with their bike. What others may think really doesn't matter as long as your happy with your purchase.

I'm sure we'll both be praising the 1199 come April. :D

Wow man I'm shocked and stoked; not a bad review or even a disparaging comment from any of the testers!
Mostly it's excitement and glowing accolades.

(I'm not holding my breath for what motorcyclist will say, and I don't care)

It looks like we really have a winner here guys! :D I can't wait!

"Simply put, Ducati’s Panigale astounded me with its sheer performance and its high level of refinement, plus it is mouth-wateringly stunning. The 1199 is a superb machine that had several jaded motojournalists considering buying one for themselves. It might even be the best sportbike ever made." Kevin Duke

One the most thrilling write ups i've read thus far...and i'm about to own one!!

OK, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Will everyone please refer to Trinity636 post above.
For God sakes, please stop posting these inane reviews from those rags that are bought and paid for by the industry:rolleyes:. I can see that everyone has been swept into the debut media/ marketing frenzy of the Panigale (Playbook from the S1000RR during it's debut). Lets face it, short of blowing up on the paddock (e.g. Aprilia RSV4), EVERY RAGS' TEST PILOT IS GOING TO OOZE BODILY FLUIDS OVER IT:eek:(especially if they hope to get an all expense paid vacation/ er... assignment to be invited to another press launch)...c'mon now!!!
The reality is, the best and most reliable reviews are going to come from forums like this one, after the real world test is done by the owners of the new machines. This is where Ducati will get its' real/ honest R&D critiques of the PANIGALE, so they can make the adjustments in 2014 to put out the bike that has corrections requested by the Ducatista that were noted on the 2012 PANIGALE (believe me, they will be paying close attention to this forum). Those RAG.com's need as many hits on their website as possible (as well as the companies that adver-TEASE on those sites), so the last thing they are going to do is be fully objective/ honest. Just like on the 2010 BMW S1000RR, None of the well known RAGS said anything about the S1000RR's PROBLEMS when that bike was being debuted and reviewed by them??? I think not. I knew that I was the TEST DUMMY for BMW:eek: and it was Forums like this one that exposed all of those issues, provided solutions; and after$5,300 in upgrades: the S1000RR was ridable for me. Of course, BMW answered the complaints that were noted on forums, like BMWS1000RRforum.com, and as you can see, the 2012 bike has been updated to address those issues.
Every Major Rag/ Bike Website is going to follow the same playbook:1) Don't say anything that can be viewed as being negative/ a real problem;2) This is the best liter bike in the history of liter bikes and Ducati's;3) Power everywhere;4) best handling liter bike/ Ducati ever;5) best electronics/seamless; and oh yeah,6) It seems like it is faster/ more powerful than the S1000RR...
So please stop with the,"ANOTHER OUTSTANDING" review threads already:(
Thank you, I feel better now...

Decent logic, but flawed. If that were the case, than essentially every new motorcycle review would be 10/10, right? The same forces you speak of would be at work for all reviews, however that's obviously not always the case.

Take, for example, the recent MCN reviews on the MV Agusta F3 and the Suzuki GSXR1000. Both reviews, although generally positive, were nowhere near "oozing bodily fluids" over either of those bikes... I'm sure the journalists were flown out and sent on a vacation to Italy and Miami for those reviews and were subject to the same pressures that you reference on the 1199 test.

Plus, these magazines do have their own credibility to worry about. I sincerely don't think that they would risk it over a single bike review. Leads me to believe that the 1199 is as great as they say it is...which we should ALL be happy to hear.

Me personally I kind of like reading all the stuff about the bike as I believe the riders all put their own personal flavour to the reports they write.
When you think about it no one has written about a Ducati like this since the release of the 916, so I can understand why they are all jumping up and down.
But if you dont like the mags then listen to what Troy B has to say, because this guy does not water down anything or make something out to be what it is not.
Maybe the reports the owners give to Ducati are how it handles as a everyday bike on our everyday roads, but at a track like this one, well most of us could only dream of doing so:D

Have you guys read the motorcycle usa review? It seems like a pretty objective write up. The reviewer does not seem to be a fan of the 1198, yet the article reads as tentative praise. I've only owned I4 bikes (CBRs) so far, and the 1199 will be my first Ducati/Twin.
I was planning to purchase an 848 before I found out about the Panigale. Lust at first sight. Have a deposit on a Base with ABS. After reading between the lines of all the reviews, it seems to me that this bike is EXACTLY what was looking for.

1.Something a bit different. (love it or hate it, the 1199 sure stands out in a sea of similar silhouettes.)

2.Size of a 600 or smaller.

3.Linear power. (I couldn't care less about peak HP. I don't have the skills of Rossi or the like to exploit the bike's full potential anyway.)

4.Slightly less stretched out ergos.

5.Decent electronic rider aids that can be turned off once I can ride like Rossi.

Everything else is Gravy.

Motorcycle usa has been pretty damn accurate for me till now.

As a 15 year editorial journalist I can tell you this is nonsense. No-one dictates what we write or how we write it - period.
But, writers are people and people tend to have preferences and are not always 100% objective.
For some writers that shows through while others are a little more open minded.

And BTW, Corse is right on target:

I wonder just how strong this engine will be. The more I read of the ride reports, the more I think this bike is lacking in outright power compared to the BMW. HP isn't critically important for me, but I don't mind having it there. Especially at this price point, it would be nice to be within 5 HP of the BMW, but I think it might come out around 160 RWHP.

As far as the positive reports, it seems almost universally praised. BMW got a lot of attention to when it came out for good reason.
