Another quick review of the 1199 - Bimmer killer?

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Coming short of the S1000RR in power would be no surprise; good examples of those are pretty much certainly making over 200HP at the crank. But even if the 1199 makes 190-ish (168 or so at the tire), the flatter delivery will make it "feel" slower. Same reason my Daytona feels slower than an R6. More on the bottom and middle means the top end hit isn't so noticeable.

EDIT: forgot to add; as far as the mostly gushing press so far, that's also no surprise. It's the first ground-up new Ducati superbike in decades and is unquestionably lighter, faster and more agile than any that preceded it with lots of bells and whistles to play with. Toss in the locale and lack of other bikes to benchmark against and there you are - smiles all around!

Safe to say the above will still hold true even after comparison testing, but some real-world, back-to-back swap-out riding will flesh out the real nature of the Panigale versus its rivals.

I wonder just how strong this engine will be. The more I read of the ride reports, the more I think this bike is lacking in outright power compared to the BMW. HP isn't critically important for me, but I don't mind having it there. Especially at this price point, it would be nice to be within 5 HP of the BMW, but I think it might come out around 160 RWHP.

As far as the positive reports, it seems almost universally praised. BMW got a lot of attention to when it came out for good reason.

Not sure if Corse is doing the correct thing by sacrificing the bottom-end (V-Twin trademark) power for a little more top end, complimented by weight reduction (to give it more unsprung HP:eek:?). It seems to me that the I-4 owners' complain about the top heavy power band (e.g S1000RR owners' like myself:(). ALTHOUGH, it sounds like they made up for the OVERESTIMATED POWER:rolleyes:, in the Handling department. It is helpful to keep in mind that C.Checa ran away with the 2011 WSBK title with a bike that was one of the slowest in the straights. However, he made up for in the curvy stuff:cool:. CORSE appears to be razor focused on improving this already well developed area of the R-class Duc's. It will probably be in the best interest of the Group from Borgo to focus on the aspect of improved HANDLING, and deflect the attention away from the power category. Then, the story becomes, "Improving On Perfection." Is it possible to improve the Ducati superbike in an area that is already rated in a Premier class all its' own...? HANDLING SUPREME!!!:D

I have to agree that I love the torque of the 1198. living at altitude (above 6000 feet) we loose about 20% power in any engine.
That's one of the reasons I like the big bikes and the 1198 has never felt like the bottom was too much to me.
and it is not wheelie prone in the least at this altitude.

Hell, I'm running my SF geared 1 down in the front and 4 up in the rear and it's still not too much torque.
My 1098 was 1 down and 2 up.

I will be disappointed if the 1199 is anemic at the bottom and mid.

Maybe will have to ride a gear lower down with the revs beginnning at 7000...

Which will mean a steadier hand on the throttle...which with low down torque doesnt require the same finesse..? Just have to wait and see but I dont think we are going to be disappointed whatever the outcome...

Don't recall reading this one either. Seems these articles are getting more detailed.

turnone, SteveB, et tu brute...please stop already with the "Check this review out..." post:eek:.
Let me help out the rest of the Ducatista who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Panigale...
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE RAGS THAT ARE HOLDING THE CORPORATE LINE!
Here is the review playbook::rolleyes:
FOR WRITE-UPS:
#1- Write from the brochure (verbatim if necessary) to take up as much space as possible in your review. This limits space for your personal take of the bike...
#2- When writing about your personal experience: do #1. Then follow Kevin Duke's model: (fill in the blank) is the best bike ever!; (fill in the blank) feels very fast, with a lot of power everywhere, much better than the previous model, more agile, feels lighter(etc...)
#3 When referring to the BMW S1000RR, only compare the brakes (especially since they use the same bosch electronics). NEVER COMPARE POWER IN ANYWAY:eek:, UNLESS YOU SAY, "It is difficult to compare the power until we have a head to head test..."

FOR GO-PRO VIDEO:
#1- Place the Polarize filter over the TFT screen so that there will not be an accidental view of the speedometer during footage of riding in the straights.:(
#2- only acceptable views: do #1 first, make sure that the sun distorts the view of the speedo. Basically, use the Neil Hodgson model: focus on the Rear tire, front shock, Face shot of the helmet that the rider is using; Zoom out to get the brake/ clutch reservoir, top triple clamp, clipons, windshield, TFT (out of focus with mirror image of the helmet that the rider is wearing); lastly, view of the trailing bike or the leading bike, and shoot of the sky as much as possible?...:(

All I can say, Thank God for MOTORCYCLE USA.com- ADAM WAHEED for having the journalistic courage of giving the most balanced review on the Paigale:)
Oh well, looks like Adam won't be invited to the Press Launch of the 799 Panigale...!

Ok, Please forget about the 1/4 mile times, 0-60 times, track times, speed on the straights, speed in the turns, etc..
All we really want to know is: CAN THE PANIGALE MEET THE LITER BIKE STANDARD:
299 kmh or 186 mph IN STOCK TRIM:D; without having to go downhill with a tailwind, doing motor work/ full exhaust, and bouncing of the limiter:mad:!!!
Everything else is subjected to rider variability. Hell, it is difficult for the same rider (e.g. ROSSI) to post not only the best/ fastest time consistently, but the SAME time consistently on a given track. If it were that easy, then the same rider would get the pole in every race, and the paddock would have just one bike/ manufacturer represented!!!
There is no such thing as perfect platform, if it were, the world would have one identical bike. That's the beauty of diversity and uniqueness.. However, every liter bike has a standard platform: at least~1000 cc, brakes, tires, suspension, exhaust...AND CAN DO 299kmh or 186 mph IN STOCK TRIM!!! I don't care about straight line speed, But I don't want to have the same awkward expression that my friend has, when we ride out and he takes his 2008-1098S (by far the slowest bike in our group when on the street; but he holds his own on the track.)

You sell Ducati short, Doc. He crashed a Streetfighter at that press launch and they're still letting him on their new toys. Hmmm... saw TB's tweet that someone at Yas threw a Panigale away, too. I wonder... ;)

Got to read the first full magazine report from Australian Motocycle News and all up it is pretty good.
Some problems that they talked about was the kickstand, it seems most riders put it down with their hands.......might have to do something about that one.
The heat coming up from below the bike was pretty hot and its possible the protusion of the rear shock could be a pain when wearing jeans......not confirmed on that one until they do a full on road test.
But basicly that was it, so all in all a pretty good report.
