Best Oil for your 1299S

Okay, in all seriousness. Just run the proper weight, preferably in synthetic, and you'll be fine. Most of us probably change our damn oil more than we need to anyways.

I'm currently using 300V, but I've used Mobil1 in all my previous Ducatis and they never blew up.

DO NOT use Canola Vegetable oil. I've seen people say this before and it's simply not true. Every time I've tried it I've run into serious engine troubles.

Ruined a D16RRm and a Superleggera because of this misinformation.

ONLY use exactly Ducati specified oil.

I find it a little hard to believe that having invested a ton of money into two high end models such as these, you would actually be bothering to save the odd couple of dollars on a cheaper alternative to reliable and tested brands of oil. Seems an ill conceived idea.

I personally use Morris Lubricants. You likely won't have heard of them over the pond but they supply many race teams with oil and notably a few who compete at the Isle of Man TT. Some of the engines which had been running their oil were stripped following an event for a complete analysis and the results conclusively showed virtually no evidence of wear. Bear in mind these engines were raced at the TT but a few hours before. Morris oils have a very specific characteristic in that they exhibit very high surface tension properties and so adhere to metal very well, whilst exhibiting good flow characteristics.

I knew I should've added in there at the end that I was being sarcastic. :p

Just to be clear...I've never owned either of those, nor have I put canola vegetable oil in a motor.

However, the new concern is interval? I'm sticking with 3000k between changes.

Flame suit on.

Dude, nobody is going to flame you. If you can get 3 million miles out of your bike only changing the oil once, that is ....... awesome.

+1 Motul 300 V

This is what my dealer puts in despite the shell sticker on the casing

Shell pays a hefty premium to have that sticker on there. The same way AGIP pays to have their sticker on the RSV4 and have AGIP mentioned in the owners manual. Same way Yamalube is mentioned in the R6 and R1 manual.

Those companies have vested interests in selling their oil and those stickers/mentions are just advertising.

The more interesting discussion is viscosity, and whether 10w-50/20w-50 is really needed in these engines/transmissions vs 10w-40. I haven't seen much of anything scientific, just opinions. The bike shifted fine for me with 10w-40 but I'm currently running 10w-50 (Castrol "Racing 4T")

Most modern synthetics are extremely good, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them except Royal Purple

For now I use the recommended shell oil. I'm sure there are plenty of oils out there that work fine.

I would get the comic of any oil works fine but from building car motors for a living I will say that is far from true. In the auto world zinc plays a big part of engine life. The US government made some auto makers drop the zinc content in there oil. This affected engines in long term. Took apart a ton of wrecked engines caused by bad oil and bad maintanence.

Zinc otherwise known as ZDDP was only restricted for engine oils up to Xw-30 grades, and is intended to preserve the effectiveness of the catalytic converters. I don't think it applies to Motorcycle oils.
It has nothing to do with the auto makers except for an EPA requirement to preserve the effectiveness/lifespan of the catalyst.

It absolutely does not apply to any engine oils of Xw-40 grade or higher.

With reference to any of the recommendations in the Owners Manual we are not affected by ZDDP restrictions for our motorcycles in any way at all.

I'm running ENI (formerly AGIP) 10W60 GP1 "race" oil in the Panigales I prepare. I'm pretty happy with it. It gets hammered in the 24 hour races we do down here, but apart from a dropped valve, I've never had any oil-related wear issues. Long may it continue...
