Last weekend, i was up by my dealer in N. Charleston and i was drooling

over the new BMW 1200 GS Adventure.

the owner of the business very rightly handed me the keys for a test ride

all i have to say is WOW! (if you haven't test rode one , go do it you will be surprised)

Over the last year the majority of my rides have been touring trips of the

mountains in NC and the Panigale is an amazing motorcycle, but

sadly i think the GSA is the better way to go for now.

I will miss my Panigale and this forum.

thank you for all your help and insight over the last year, it has been a

pleasure discussing Ducati gab, and i wish all of you the very best.

Ride safe, twist the wrist, and above all have fun.

regards

Chris Lakian

Horses for courses, completely different motorbikes. I had a KTM 1190 Adv R for a while and was very impressed with it's playful performance on twisty roads. It was rubbish at going really fast and it weighed a tonne and took up too much space in the garage so not the choice for me but I can certainly see why people could enjoy them for touring in particular.

Interesting how we all differ with opinion.
I rode the GS and wanted to vomit! The torque from the boxer motor when you blip the gas makes the back end shake, the bike is ugly and does nothing for me.
BMW bikes do there jobs well but are just boring .... Just my opinion, same as the BMW cars like the M series ..they are really good and reliable.
But you can't compare them to say Italian or British makes.

I appreciate that everyone has opinion but no one can tell me the GS is stunning looking unless they themselves are a bit suspect
Italian super model or Helga with hair under her bulging armpits serving draft beer with 5 pints in each hand is how I look at it.

as i think the gs is ugly as sin i have no problem with the OP opting for one as thats his type of riding
as far as the M cars go have you ever owned one? what cars are you comparing them too would love to know as the M division of BMW has consistently turned out the best cars for years. i cant even think of an italian or british car that can compete

this is my new GS, its amazing, fully mapped, full ti Akra.. for uk roads its perfect and you need to be very good on a sports bike to keep with it..its my 6th GS and i wouldn't be without it i would sell the 1299 without thinking if i had to make the choice and i love the Duke, i put the handling down to the paralever suspension. it doesn't dive under braking but squats the whole bike down so the geometry remains constant..another thing about them is you wont fall in love straight away or on one test ride but if you took one on a trip you wouldn't want to give it back:D

on a side note, i also test rode the bmw 1000rr and i thought that was eh....
great suspension, telepathic steering, but man that exhaust was horrid sounding.

if you close your eyes on a bmw1000rr are you on a honda? no wait a kawasaki... yea thats what this reminds me of..

haha

you are all right the panigale is a ... magnet! but the best part of owning a vehicle and selling it is you can always go back and get another..

Which year S1000RR did you go on? the new 2015/6 model with the up and down blipper sounds amazing popping and banging away. Possibly one of the best sounding stock exhausts I've heard. I have one and as people mentioned above I find it really difficult to fall in love with like a Ducati. After a few months I have supposedly traded it in for a new 1199R which is the only bike I really lust after. I'm now finding it really difficult to take the S1000RR in and might try and hang on to it as it's a near perfect road bike. It's a fair bit faster than my 1199S and pretty much matches the new 1199R, just missing the low down torque, so will be a weapon on track. They just lack the emotion of the Ducatis and having learnt to ride on the 1199 I dont really like the girth of the inline fours.

Heading to Laguna Seca from LA In a few weeks time and I was seriously thinking about renting one of these for the trip. Very curious.

While I think he overstated it a bit, it is true that many BMWs, especially the 5 series have been bashed for going the wrong direction the past few years. I had a current generation 550 with the M-Sport package for three years then switched to Audi A7s. I'm not bashing the 550, but the Audi is the better drivers car in my opinion.

As to the GS, it is an odd comparison, but people like what they like. And as you can see in my sig below, I have two other bikes to serve different riding needs.

A7 is a gorgeous car you think the a7 is better than the 550? Maybe the s7 but the A. I don't doubt you as you have had both. I as well have an m sport 5 and can't wait to get rid of it. Before that I had 2 m3 and my 2012 m3 and 2008 m3 were both better than anything audi or merq put out in that class nevermind the m4 which will be my next car.

A7 has 333 hp the 550 has 445 I highly doubt the a7 outperforms it. S7 different story has 450 hp

MY buddy has the 16 1200rs, Not for me. Might be fun for slabbing or more comfy, but that's not what I bought the 1199 for.

The 550 had a lot of great qualities and I admit there are a number of things I loved about it. But the A7 drives like more of a sport sedan than the 550. I'm not one to say "night and day difference", and some of what people like are subjective. There is not a right or wrong answer, just my person preference.

The 5 has become soft as I said you had both so I'm not doubting you on feel as that's been the knock on the 5 since the body change. I've seen a few rs7 out there simply gorgeous I've seen plenty of a7 but funny never an s7
I have one more year in the 5 bmw will take me out 6 months early as long as I stay with them. Can't wait

My 550 was the 400 horse version before they updated it to 440. But the performance tests don't lie, the 333 hp Audi is very close in acceleration. I've seen 4.6 0-60 on the Audi in various tests and very low 13's at 105-106 in the 1/4 mile. Those are amazing numbers for a 333 hp car as big as the car is.

But note that there is more to performance than acceleration. I never said the A7 was faster. If only acceleration was important none of us would be here, we would be on the RR forum ;)

I'm on the rr forum also great points love it I was just on the audi site they stopped the rs5 [emoji35]

I have actually owned two A7s now...a 2015 and a 2016. It was all I could do to not buy an S6 both times, especially when I bought the 2016. Mind you, I still respect the 550 a lot and would not rule out another one.

BTW, I love the RS5!

Audis, Bimmers...blah...big heavy boats

I'll keep my 370 rwhp FD RX-7 - 2800 lbs - a purist sports car, not a 3800+ lb couch for middle aged guys with a gut

The FD is car on a diet and fat guys don't fit - I like that

If you have the means, why not keep both? They couldn't be more different bikes. The 1299 is never going to work for all day cruising through the mountains unless you're a glutton for butt punishment, BMWs are lounge chairs by comparison, but the weight is a major penalty for corner charging. For the type of riding you're doing the BMW is the better choice, no question.

Ever been on NC 9 or just the parkway? NC 9 is my personal racetrack, no cops, triple digit boogie

I owned one of the very first RX7s in the country in 1978. In 1982 I traded it for a new one that I modded the hell out of, including a turbo. Fast forward through the years, four years ago I sold my 2009 Z06 Corvette because it sat in the garage most of the time and I was building my collection of fast bikes.

Just a matter of priorities now. The A7 is what I need for work and commuting. Besides, at 63 years old I'm not sure if I'm even mid aged still :D
