This is what I felt also when I was going between the two. I'm a Ducati man, but if BMW decides to someday actually make their bike a stunner it will be very hard to turn that down. Ducati must be incredibly grateful BMW hasn't realized that yet...

It's funny, but (from BMW's end), it's almost like them justifying their ugly girlfriend because she's great in the sack... :)

Lol :D

But seriously, it's actually quite frightening. Imagine if BMW had made it a stunner and ditched the Quazimodo look - we'd ALL be riding and watching S1KRR's EVERYWHERE

I love german engineering, always have. I have owned Porsches since I was 20 years old. But looking back at all the models Porsche has ever made, none would I call exotic, or compare to a super model like I would Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Masaratis, Alpha Romeos, and of course Ducatis. Not to mention Gucci, Armaini, etc. It's more than just the look, it is the Italian design montra. BMW will never achieve that because they are German. BMW can make a more depenable bike, even a faster bike, but it will never be Italian.

Southeastduc, like this reply....made me laugh..:D.

BMW really set out to trump the Japs, and they well and truly did that. That's why it was priced the way it was, they wanted to sell a lot of them

It's all about efficiency, emotion does not come into it. Ducati is exactly the opposite, all about emotion. And the Panigale does that in spades as only the Italians can. Everywhere you look at the design you could say BMW would never have done that. ( or the Japs either)

I drive a German car ( Audi) and probably always will, but sports bikes are my passion, and thanks that manufactures like Ducati exist, never a dull moment!

And you are right, the I4 drone of the BMW drove me nuts, the Ducati 1199 is soul stirring, I will never get tired of that. A big booming V twin, yes please.

I"m with you on the BMW whine. I heard one being run up on a dyno and couldn"t believe it. It sounded like a gas turbine,it just revved and revved and revved. Jap bikes before it had run out of gears and puff. The beemer just carried on going,I was like whoa when is this gonna stop. I thought it was gonna rev into next week, just phenomonal. Lets not forget BMW were in F1 racing and also supplied the engine for the Mclaren F1 road car and that was the fastest road car for a decade or more until the Veyron came along with 4 turbos. The Mc being normally aspirated with 600+bhp. They do know how to put a good engine together. Always will. BUT we got Audi behind Ducati now. They have wreaked havoc at Le Mans over the last few years, being a dominant force. It"s gonna make things interesting in the future.

Amen brother!

Obviously BMW has built a great bike but I looked at it again at the show in DC today and it doesn't come close to sparking my interest based on its looks alone not to mention the standard I4.

I think Xbox has it said best about the front looking like Quasimodo and then the shark gille sides to the insect looking tall section. What's with giant side can? Just my opinion of course...not up to par on aesthetic design.

I took my Panigale S to the track yesterday. My track bike is / was a BMW S 1000RR, I am an ex A grade racer so I was looking forward to this.

The Pani S is completely standard except for some grippier pegs, and I had a fresh set of tyres on. Ran it only in Race Mode on the default settings. First impressions were that the Pani seems lighter and more flickable, around the tight and twisty sections it was near perfect, I could even hang with the 600 young guns. I saw no reason to play with any settings even the sue soon, as I was busy learning everything about it. That will come next time.

I tried all sorts of gear points on it, but found it best to leave it a higher gear than the BMW, torque it out of corners then do a quick short shift and drive through. Absolutely brilliant. I had a tussle with a gaggle of Jap race bikes and it was priceless to come out of second gear corners and wheelie past them to the next corner, simply fantastic. Certainly had some guys shaking their heads in the pits.

Where it lost out to the BMW was on any long straight, it just did not seem to have that that final insane top end kick the Beemer has. Having said that, I did hook onto a Kawasaki Zx10 race bike of a young mate of mine, and down the same straight I could actually reel him in fairly easily, so the Pani in standard trim is between these bikes. But as I said through the next twisty sections, the Pani was sheer bliss.

I could see easily how non Ducati riders, or guys not used to them would struggle with it. It is a more physical bike to ride hard than the super smooth and relatively easier Beemer. By the end of the day, though I found the more you threw it around like a 250 the more it responded. It is nothing like the 916/1098 bikes. In race mode it actually an angry beast, and again this could put some people off. I loved it.

I am hooked, and can't wait for the next day.

If I was still racing the BMW would be easier straight out to go fast, and as a club level racer is hard to beat.

But the Ducati, as an intoxicating track weapon is simply sensational, but you have to work at it. Very happy.

Cheers

Thanks for the ride report mate. Which track ? I assume Eastern creek.

whoo hoo. to bmw...the finlaily made a good bike after all those yearsall they did japanese technology...that is fact

Not surprised by the BMW dominance or the base model being on par or bettering the S. Ducati's have traditionally been close in spec just not in price.

Seriously, if aesthetics are the only fault you can find with a bike after 3 yrs of dominance then they must be doing something right. BMW has nothing to worry about. They hit the ball out of the park, not only beating the Japanese but the Euros as well.

^^most important thing to note is the 1199 passing on the inside at :16 :)

Otherwise not sure of the relevance to this thread.

everytime i go for a ride with my Beemer buddy he tells me at each stop how great the pani sounds. i always reply: sorry, can't hear your turbine :D
