This weekend, I finally reached that magic number, 1,563 miles (or 2,500 km - remember; she's Italian).
And now for some inconsequential details...
Oil consumption -- 350 ml consumed in the first 604 miles (all in the first 240 miles), oil change, and then an additional 150 ml of oil consumed up to and including the first 1,500 miles.
Break-in -- She was broken in by the book. That is: oil change at 604 miles and kept below 6K for the first 621 miles, followed by a limit 7K until 1,523 miles, followed by an exploration of man, machine and country roads - in fact, that appears to be the theme of the first 1,600+ miles so far. Breaking in this bike on serpentine roads with ups, downs, and arounds to give the engine a highly variable load and me a blast of adventure. (See my post: 1198 S ABS 1200-mile weekend.)
First Impressions -- I have only a little under 100 miles over break-in; but here's what I remember of those glorious moments after break-in: (1) The sound of a ghost superbike overtaking me was actually my own induction sound - I swear, somewhere around 8k, the induction roar will have you looking over your shoulder to see who is overtaking you. It caught me out twice. (2) The character of the bike changes above 8K - it's so much more and it happens more quickly. (3)While extremely fast and exhilarating (with the quick-shifter coming into it's own) I could not help but to explore race mode. I loved the feel of the throttle - response was so quick. But then again, I was limited for time and my tune may change when I face situations which require more finesse with the throttle.
Bonus -- I had the pleasure of experiencing my break-in ride while riding with friends on a 916 and an 1198 SP, making things all the more sweeter and gave it a special sense of cameraderie and occasion... a sort of multi-generational, coming of age moment for her.
Unfortunately - after we split up, them to continue riding and me to go home and work on the deck and yard, my friend on the 1198 hit a deer at 79 MPH. The deer ran into him from the left -- in a mad dash to get to the other side -- first coming into contact with the fairing-clutch-finger-handlebar combination followed leg-peg-and-boot combination. Fortunately, my friend stayed on his bike. He did not crash (miraculous) and will be fine as long as the reconstructive surgery on his left index finger does not leave it looking like a toe. (Not so inconsequential.)
Be careful out there.
