THE BIKE:
Pani S, stock.

ME:
This is where it gets tricky.. I'm a big fat MF. 120kg. 265lbs?

THE SKILLZ:
Decent rider, fast-ish.. Have chicken strips, but they're small.

THE RIDE:
What most of you would call "canyon" or "Mulholland" style roads mostly, with some mild / moderate bumps to consider.

THE EXPECTATION:
Sublime telepathic handling.

THE SPEND:
Zero. I realise I probably need a rear spring, at the very least, but I need to wait for the wallet / wife to recover first. In the mean time I want to feel confident I have a half reasonable compromise given the adjustments available.

THE SETUP:
The below is what was set and discussed as a starting point when the mech and I did the pre-delivery and initial suspension set up for my not inconsiderable weight.

Sag: 25mm with me on the bike.
F comp 27
F rebound 17
R comp 26
R rebound 23

I'm not unhappy with the current set up, but neither me or the mech who helped me make the original set up claim to be a suspension guru, and I KNOW there are some here well versed in the black art, so...

What say you ?

Thanks in advance,
Josh.

First off you may need a new spring to match your weight - secondly the setting you and the tech came up with seem a bit soft. I am 190 lbs and my settings are

FR 17
FC 24
RR 17
RC26

To be very clear this is all very subjective and will not work rider to rider. However you can see if you are in the ball park or way off if your settings are significantly different.

Thanks TS,
You're quite probably right. Although I'm getting close ish to the end of adjustment on comp, and I'm not sure if there's a downside to maxing (or almost maxing) that out.
I'll see what the other gurus think also and take suggestions into account.
Thanks very much for the reply.
It's appreciated.

remember the higher the number the SOFTER the suspension - its a bit backwards - Good Luck !

I have a suspension guy at the track I go to and I am going on the 10th I will see if he has any suggestions

Holy ballz.
Have I got it ass-backwards ?

I'm on my way home to change things up and go for a test ride now...
What would you suggest ?

F comp
F rebound
R comp
R rebound

Really appreciate the help...

Hey Josh are you in F or P ??

Not to give you a hard time but your weight is pretty close to my wife and me on the bike and P wet setting with 195Hi was perfect for really bumpy roads and sports setting good, not perfect for smooth roads.....you can then play from there.

I'm in P. ( and not offended :)

I designated RACE as experimental. 195Lo.
Just in from a test.
I set DES to 16 across the board as a "flat" baseline.
Front felt good, but rear was too stiff, so...
Tried
FC 16
FR 16
RC 20
RR 20

And despite how weird it looks "on paper" it actually feels pretty good.

A work in progress for sure, but it's an improvement.

Any and all suggestions very welcome.

yeah I didnt think so:D.....Thats good you are getting somewhere and that is what I love about this bike the trial and error of finding something that works for your way of riding.

I am going to go back to F as soon as I have finished scarying the .... out of the family as I like this the best.

Just hit on what for me is the best set up for my S Tricolore. I have an Aprilia RSV4F SE APRC which I use for Track Days and my Tricolore never felt quite as good until now. I weigh 77Kg.
For the Road I have set the tyre pressures to 32Psi Front and 32Psi Rear. Set the Rear link onto "P" instead of "F". I run the ECU in "Race", great throttle response and I set the Front and Rear suspension as per the "Standard Sports" settings with the ECU in "Race". Feels brilliant now, I can actually feel the suspension working unlike before when the whole bike felt far too rigid.

Aren't you suppose to start with preload and get the sag closer to the desired road or track settings before you start with hydraulic damping?

I'm no expert, but I love to watch Dave Moss at work on youtube. It seems to be his starting point once he has resolved the springs rates

General question: If bumps are knocking me off the seat. Should I soften compression, rebound or both?

My wrench told me to try back of the rebound.

We need a really good explanation of compression and rebound and how the front anrear play together posted on this forum, would help a lot with all us noobs that are fiddling with our suspension for the first time - anyone know a good source?! Luckily there's a default reset button!

if you plan to do a track day, most track orgs have suspension guys there. failing that I'd take it to a good suspension guy and let him help with it.

This is far too complex a subject to just start turning knobs and such.

I was lucky enough to have Dave Moss spend the day working on mine at a track day at barber, a couple links to his site posted above.

Also agree with Rebound.

October 2010 fast bikes mag.com has a document to explain basic setup - just can't access the site from work to send the link...

Frankly, any offered suspension settings are going to be a guess. Depends on what kind of riding you will be doing, track/race, highway, twistys, smooth roads, bumpy roads, pot holes, etc... I would set your front and rear sag then ride at the stock settings and adjust either damping or rebound individually and find out what works for you.

Gentlemen , trying to use comp and reb to compensate for 2 sizes of springs is an absolute no go .. Preload is prob maxd out as well so things compound .. Maxing comp out on the front just transfers all the weight onto the tire . Not good .. Springs carry you , C n R do the job of getting you over the road an through turns under acc and deceleration .. If you re riding fastish , it just gets a load worse.. As you ll get over the grip of the tires sooner .. How do you think the suspension if a 5 ton truck works if you put 15 tons on it ?
