the 1199 was shown today in sydney australia, i'm in brisbane so unfortunately i can't see it..all the guys who have seen this bike seem to be hating it and some even given their deposits back

They have mentioned the very open unprotected rear brake resevoir, the positioning of the abs(near horizontal cylinder), rear shock of course(very concerned with leg hitting it and even ruining the wires into the top of shock with boots).

The overall feel of the bike seems to be.......cheap and lacklustre....

For the guys who have seen this bike....Where you happy with the overall quality and finish of this bike?

A lot of the comments from those who have seen and sat on the S and base models, both in Milan and in the UK, centred around the fairings and their marked flimsiness. It was the single biggest complaint. Next were the wires from the rear shock and fork tops fragility and how well they would stand up to normal wear and tear. Also the high cost of a lowside on the left side with such vulnerable hardware exposed. Foot position on the left hand foot peg is also a hot topic, with your foot being displaced outwards to accommodate the suspension. (The same criticism was levelled about the right hand side foot peg on the Monster S4RS a few years back) Apart from a few comments on the overall look and feel of other plastic parts (cheap in appearance) most comments were positive. I must admit, once you subtract the "must have regardless" brigade from the pool of potential buyers, a large proportion of those left are not overly impressed, and it is interesting to compare this reaction with that of people at the launch of the 1098.

A lot of people have said, due to the high asking price of the 1199S ABS at almost £20K in the UK (it being the model and spec most UK dealer pre-orders comprise of and therefore indicative of the model most appear to aspire to own) they would, if in the market for a Panigale, get the base model and add to it over time.

Having always had S models myself in the past, do I think the Panigale S ABS is worth £20,000? Three years ago this would buy you a 1098S plus a whopping £6000 in change. Is the new bike really worth paying such a huge premium for?

I appreciate the spec sheet that comes with that price tag compared to its predecessor, but even with the Ohlins DES electronics package, I cant possibly know that until I ride it, then I will know for sure, one way or the other. I want to like this bike and on looks and form I do. I am concerned over some of the issues raised, but many of these can only be assessed with use. Spending that much without a test ride seems a little foolish IMHO.

I haven't seen the new machine yet, other than in pictures. Bike is supposed to arrive at a show in Toronto Canada next month. Hope to see it then.
How do you like the overall look compared to your current ride? Dave

Disappointed

Yep have to agree with other comments re cheap and flimsy look of the bike. I saw it at the nec show in Birmingham and was underwhelmed and disappointed, especially by the standard 1199, which is what I have on order. Think I will be cancelling and asking for my deposit back.

Wow that bad mate?

Maybe I had my rose coloured specs on but I didn't see anything to put me off when I looked at it and sat on it at the NEC bike show, if anything it looked even better in the flesh. I know of at least three guys that are 'non Ducati owners' that also placed orders for base models with Termi's since seeing it at the bike show........

my brother went and had a squiz @ the sydney show, and he thought it was a thing of beauty, thought the build quality was awesome, very impressed, were both getting one.
cheers burty.

Not sure what has brought this bout of namby pamby nerves about Panigale orders on. There have been many journalistic write-ups of the Panigale and none of the journos have made these kind of comments.

I slung my leg over the Panigale at the NEC and my pics are here on this forum: http://ducati1199.com/ducati-1199/117-panigale-detail-shots-nec-bike-show-birmingham.html

Like Ducati Kip and burty I saw nothing to put me off, and also thought it looked better in the flesh.

If your foot is 'displaced outwards to accommodate the suspension' then I certainly didn't detect it sitting on the bike, and looking at the pics just can't see it either. As for flimsy fairing panels. What do you expect? It's a 168Kg 1200cc Superbike for Gawdsake!

I have an Ohlins-equipped Multistrada and although it's a bit early to be confident about this, the cable entries (identical to the Panigale) to the forks/shock still look/work the same as the day the bike arrived.

My only gripe was the plastic hugger and exhaust guard on the Panigale - even on the Tricolore - that's a cheap shot Ducati - change it now!

They want you to buy the carbon parts:rolleyes:

I'll get to see one this coming weekend at long beach IMS.
Can't wait to see it...

Going on this Saturday.....Finally gonna see this thing of beauty up close and personal.....and judge the bike in all aspect.....gonna take plenty of pics and hopefully nothing will change my mind about this bike....well we'll see then....

Glad you are so confident. I am merely echoing the sentiments of several people, besides yourself, who also sat on the bike. Both at the NEC and in Milan. I personally did not get a chance to prod and poke about at the fairings despite attending both shows and sitting on the base and S models. Some of the plastics did look cheap but then always have done, to encourage you to plunder the accessories catalogue. As for what to expect from a 168kg bike, well I think most people take that view that lightness should not come at the expense of quality if you are planning on spending almost £20,000. Not an unreasonable expectation in my opinion. Maybe this does not bother you.

You can have flimsy materials that don't look / feel flimsy. Small "T" like reinforcements are easy to mold in and in the right spots will make a very lightweight material feel far more rigid than it should. I wonder if the fairings on the pre-production bikes were simply built for looks, whereas the production ones will have an extra 2 oz of strategic structural material baked in.

flynbulldog can you take a few pictures of the rear fender (license plate holder) to show how it is attached to the underside of the tail. That is one ugly piece of plastic that will be the first thing to go and I want to see how I can put something in its place.

Cheers.

will do.

I wonder if the people getting their deposits back are guys who really didn't like the bike or guys who began freaking out at the fact that they were going to spend so much on it and were looking for a way out. Anyone who would want his deposit back based on looks alone just reinforces the stereotype that Ducati guys are more about style than performance anyways.
