sadly i just checked the coolant level in the overflow tank....cold..."i got nuttin", zero....not a drop.......

- fairings off the only way to get a it ?

AH went a bit "over the top" literally :)

-- basically, just top it off with Prestone ?

I used Engine Ice since I had a couple jugs of it lying around from when I did the radiator repairs on my SF. You are about to get several dozen opinions on coolant in 3....2.....1....

:)

I use engine ice in the Pani since it sees alot of street and Watter wetter on the track bike;)

You can get the top of the coolant jug off without removing anything. Just turn it with your fingers and then flex the fairing up a bit when removing it. Then slide your tubing on your funnel and fill away. The level is a PITA to see as well so I drop an led light on a stalk down in there and then kneel down and shake the bike back and forth.

Why did they make something that should be so simple so complex???...Oh wait...Its a Ducati

Amen. It's not just the 1199 either. On the SF they made the canister so damn hard to see through that even with an LED inside it you can barely make out the fluid level, although they did make the canister easier to reach. Compare that with my BMW where even the most ham-fisted of ogres can reach and open the coolant bottle with ease and you can practically read the level sitting on the seat. *sigh*

.....LOL's....yes....coolant, motor oil...ect......i know the drill....however, i did notice warning in the manual that said only to use an AGIP brand, and Have It Topped Off @ Dealer Only

....so, you're saying.....remove only the reservoir filler cap and i'l be able to snake a tube in there to top it off ? -- all fairing parts stay in place ?

Use distilled water to top it off.

Also, you might have coolant in there, but it's almost impossible to see. Best method to check:
Remove right side fairing, unscrew radiator overfill cap, insert a zip tie into the coolant jug (use it as a dipstick), pull it out and see if there's liquid on it. I'll bet there is....

Having the top of the fairing cut out makes it easy to shine a light in there, which makes it easier to see the coolant level from the other side, but some purple dye would really help (or, duh, a totally clear plastic overfill tank!).

....i'm not sure i should even be talking to you......i saw "your method"....i, unfortunately do not have a sawzall blade  :)

+1 - tank design is poor as AH says. You will have to remove the side fairing, but that's it. You can snake the tubing in once the right side fairing is off.

....damn.....so i need one of those allan head things.......such frustration

Or jam a small flat head in there sideways. ;)

If you look at AH's picture just imagine the horrific frankenchopping of the fairing hadn't happened. You just remove the cap under the piece AH cut out and flex it up a little to get it off the top of the bottle. Then thread your tubing in there and fill away.

Looking at that pic I don't see any marker to indicate what the proper level of coolant should be???? How do you tell??

It's on the inside of the wheel well (other side of bottle). Or do the AH method and punch a few holes in the bottle until it starts leaking coolant. "A-ha, so that's how full it was".

...lol's...yes...thanks for the pictorial...i think i'll try your way first, and see how it goes....thanks for the tips ! ;)

I lower one of these things into there (not exact, but similar). It won't fall all the way in because the hand held battery part is too big to fit between the bottle and the fairing.

You can also get the radiator cap off too. You just have to flex the fairing a little more than you'd like to and bend the cap sideways.
