Because AIM is not a Chinese startup but a dinosaur stuck on old tech that cost silly money.

There is real competition in the space, hence most of products are bulky

The SmartyCam 3 Sport isn’t particularly big. It’s just not the greatest definition (4K would be nice at that price but it does take the data from a DL and overlay it automatically).

Did you mean there is no real competition?

Considering they are selling kits for bikes it would be nice if they could reduce the size a bit. With the packaging on our bikes there’s really not much room for all this stuff. The tool kit supplied with my bike was an Allen key… 🤣

It looks like the SmartyCam Dual has a built-in data logger, so would that mean you could just get that, connect it to the ECU and you’d get all the data and video overlays without having to get a Solo 2, assuming that you’re not bothered about having a display that you keep looking down at?

AIM Solo 2 is doing that.

The only annoying thing in it is that you have to move your head down to see it.

Otherwise I2M and Motec or Magneti Marelli doing this as well

Starlane Stealth mounted above the stock dash would solve that problem.

Able to provide a few logging features too.

It looks like they provide data through additional sensors. A CAN bus connection is mentioned and one that’s specific for the Panigale can be found if you search hard enough but it’s tough to find out what data you get. I’d guess it’s nowhere near as comprehensive as AIM.

It’s probably fine if you just want a lap timer but I’ve no idea about how accurate or reliable it is. Horrible website though and not exactly easy to find information.

That is if you can stand seeing something that looks like a 80s vintage electronics mounted in your modern day cockpit

Apparently AIM can make up a cable to connect the SmartyCam 3 Dual (and I assume GP) directly to the ECU, thus giving video with data overlays, including brake pressure for bikes with an ABS pump, and a display such as the Solo 2 is not required if you don’t want one. That would suit me - one less thing to fit somewhere and my DDA gives me some basic information between sessions anyway.

Two cameras would be nice, although the control unit is massive, but I’m thinking the camera behind the rider to get some idea of body position is probably of more benefit than the front camera…

Being able to connect the camera directly to the ECU and the camera has data logging built in is pretty cool though.

The Starlane stealth maybe with a couple add ons looks like the best fit for my needs. I think I can mount it just above my Ducati dash and not have the look down while in a tuck crossing the start/finish of a straight and see my laptime. I have the Mellotti dash protector case that I can problem drill into to mount the Starlane.

Another video/logging option with the right parts...

It would need the optional OBD/CAN interface cable connected to an OBD Ducati Euro4/5 cable to log throttle/braking etc..

Also some other lap timers, video and logging equipment they offer... not cheap

Some nice features, although lacking the automatic recording of the AIM stuff and even more expensive. I couldn't see any documentation to indicate the size of the unit.

Something like 80x40x50mm

That's quite neat then. The price is a bit of an issue and a cable would need to be made. It's a very neat solution though. More investigation required, including whether there's some flexibility on price. Automatic recording start would be nice though - you would think that's simply a software feature that could be implemented.

I'd definitely have this over a DDA+ as it's got much better features, more data, more reliable (I believe) and data can be overlaid to video.

I've no idea why DDA+ isn't more fully featured in terms of data and functions. It's only software to update but they clearly have no interest in doing so.
