Ducati’s inspiration for the new V4SL

V4R and V4SL both use the stradale R engine, they're the same except the SL has lighter camshafts and the various bolts on the engine are Ti.

Correct. I have been inside both of those engines as well as the 1299SL and FE/R motors. The V4 SL and R motors are identical except for some slight variation in the valve train. The cams are not lighter. Someone wrote that the SL has Ti cams. Not accurate. Part numbers with Ducati don’t mean .... and that isn’t an indication of what’s where.

For instance in the 1299 SL vs 1299FE/R. The heads are identical. The cams have different part numbers but spec the same. The valves are the same size but the R head does not have Ti valves all around. Rods are the same. Cranks are different but not in spec. Pistons are identical. The SL has aluminum liners and the FE/R has steel liners. The SL crank is a modded stock crank where the FE/R crank is specific to the FE/R and is actually a nicer crank. All the other internal components are identical. V4 SL, very much the same.

The Ti engine hardware from the factory is a joke. They replaced what is visual. The rest of the engine hardware is stock.

Good points, especially regarding collectibility of the SL if they go all electric (I hope not).

Regarding the bike being “interesting”, it occurs to me that even though I’m generally a Ducati fan and I’m generally not a BMW fan, I find he HP4 Race far more interesting than the v4 SL.
Agreed, I mean come on man. The billet masters are 600 retail. Ducati could get them for half that. The billet rear caliper, 400 bucks. A decent triple, 800 bucks. Put the damn T drives on there, a decent QS, MS calipers and a damn carbon tank. It’s 3k from CDT. Your charging 100k+. Quit giving me components that are on your entry level bike.

The one thing that makes the bike even slightly interesting to buy is the engine, it’s not just a V4R engine strapped to all those V4SL bits and bobbins, all the internals of the engine are redesigned abs strengthened and lightened so you have stronger and lighter rotating assemblies manufactured to OEM quality in terms of durability.

My only challenge to that is that it’s really not that interesting for someone that races and is rebuilding every 1-2 seasons anyway. Also lighter rotating assembly does not always equal better. There are a lot of racers that opt for slight heavier rods to slow down the spin up of the engine for corner exiting stability. Doesn’t the SL just have some minor internal bolt difference or something little like that?

I am building an engine up r1 race bike. The amount of money I saved going with a bare engine is a lot. I’ll maybe have 60k in this bike and it will be more powerful than a v4 and will perform better in every aspect. If I really wanted to do a full race v4 I would probably sell my current v4s and buy a wrecked v4r for the engine only and start there.

Oh no we’re not, your own personal journey with the brand and model puts that subject matter into true perspective. You chose a factory built bike and got just what you asked for.

while I didn’t ask for it….I do agree, the factory did build it, I bought it, and have been riding it….with the emphasis on riding it, to wit "my personal journey" is a wrench free one…..for me, the only way to ride !

Thank You Ducati !

Worse still, you can’t even upgrade many of the components on the V4SL because every bracket, and attachment is bespoke to that bike…no shared part numbers and the geometry is actually different…so you would have to custom fab a lot of aftermarket parts onto that bike instead of just bolting them on.

Part numbers might be different but for the most part this isn't true. V4SL stuff bolts right up to V4R/V4 and vise versa. They made no significant changes in the way anything is mounted up. There's some little stuff, like the rear brake mounting bracket, but once again that could easily be swapped out with one from the other bikes or the other way around.

Over at Ducati Modified, Howard is building a living room monument out of a V4S Anneversario and many of the bits he has put on there come from the Superleggera. It isn't anywhere near as bespoke as you may think it is.

I wonder how their doing the dual clutch transmission for the Superlaggera.

IMHO
If you want to see what is coming in a future SL. Look to the GP bike. Ducati is doing what Ferrari has done. Build bikes based on your racing tech.
The bikes shown earlier in the pics are paint jobs and mods. You can paint a Panigale any color and it would like good. The lines of the bike are art. Same as the 916.

Hmmm that seems to contradict what was advertised.

Told by who?!

The add is clearly posted by a dealership. There’s absolutely nothing official about this abomination.

Yea I’m going with info from guys who actually went to the event and info from the CEO of DNA who spoke of this very project collaboration. This looks to be a custom order option but it’s definitely from the factory.
