When you get called out, you answer the call. First the disclaimer. The prices here are what I actually paid to build this bike. If I had to compare, many are on the high side but they are very accurate from what is available from OPP, Belisimoto etc. They are all retail and by "retail" I mean what anyone off the street can get these items for. I did not have any discounts from any of these vendors. That being said, if a shop were to replicate this, there would be a substantial savings. The exception to this are the custom parts that were made by Northrop R&D. This is my cost and reflects what I paid for raw materials and what I paid Mike to run these parts in the Haas after hours. Variable costs are items I purchased from ebay. I have included the invoice for the motor as a reference. You may pay more or less depending on the seller. There are duplicates on the items I purchased on ebay just about every time I look and I have purchased additional motors. This is the highest priced 1299 motor I have purchased. I have included the place of purchase and the names of the people I dealt with. Fell free to contact any of them if you have doubts on anything listed. I have also included a comparison between what came on the SL and what is in this build as I did make the claim that I could build a better bike than the factory SL for less. The term "better" is of course open to interpretation and opinion and you are certainly entitled but I think you will agree on most items. The only place on this bike that I elected not to spend the money was on the FGR 300 forks. They will be on the latest build. There are of course things missing but they are insignificant. I did make most of the brackets and spacers. There are many places I could have saved some money as there are "overboard" items here. $1200.00 for a rear caliper, $1200.00 for a rear master Cylinder, $3000.00 for ceramic rotors etc so nothing was removed from the list to make the numbers. The SL sold for $65,000.00. This build came in at $61,781.00. The new SL is on the rumor mill for $80-85 or higher. I can get the wheels from BST. Same price as the OZ mags that are on it now. The BST swing arm is $5000.00 and if BST makes a frame its 4K and change so that would bring this build up to $71,000.00 to duplicate the new 1299 SL (minus any new electronics) as the wheels are a wash and I will have better parts I assure you. There are a few guys on this board who have seen this bike in person so it is not vaporware and I ride it every day. Its not for everyone and I get all the pros and cons. That wasn't the point. The point was, could I build what I considered a better SL than the factory for less. In my mind, I did and so can anyone else.

good job. but if you waited a year you could have bought slightly used sl for 45k ;p

and you did go overboard by about 6k....

still, you've proven your point, but your resale will be far inferior to stock sl, so it's kind of apples oranges in a way. and will your laptimes be better?

Mannn, I'm not even sure why you fell for the bait and gave in to this nonsense. You don't owe anyone an explanation or proof of anything. Your bike is ridiculous and considering the fact that you did a lot of the work yourself, you deserve some credit for that. If people doubt your ability to replicate a premier model from a lower model starting point, then that's their problem. Enjoy your bad ... bike man. Some trick custom stuff on there too that you won't get on 2014 SL or any SL for that matter.

I hate when tunnel visioned individuals always bring lap times into the conversation as if that's the reason people mod bikes. Contrary to popular belief, fact is, the majority of folks who mod bikes don't do it with improving lap times in mind. They do it for many other reasons before they even think of lap times. Improving lap times should NEVER be in the conversation when discussing modding liter bikes for like 99% of members on here since almost no one on here can outride their stock Panigales.

Money is obviously not an issue for him to consider resale value. He had a goal in mind without a specific budget. He did just that. Worse case scenario, he can easily part it out and get a huge portion of his money back but that wasn't the point. Instead of gangin up on the guy, more people should give him credit for experimenting with a lot of different parts and sharing his findings about what works and what doesn't. Some of that info he shares is priceless for some members so they don't go down the same problematic path he went through by trial and error.

endo: I envy you! :)
There is clear difference between what things are selling for and what they are worth. Your bike is probably closer to the "real" value than the factory SL not counting the price of your hours of work.
After all these are just objects bolted or welded together to produce something with a purpose. I like yours better than the Ducati factory version. Definitely eliminates sloppy execution if it is just 1 piece for yourself. And Ducati is great at overpricing their things because of the hype they claim the decades and marketing are bringing for them.
You are proud of what you built there with a reason, but still, I think you overreacted on "being called on" ;)
Congrats!

PS: Not "anyone can do" what you did, definitely not with a medical background...

This configuration is above anything I've heard or seen of!!!!!
As far as I can see, only two points are a bit misleading: No work hours counted and no paint job. That makes it a tiny little bit an apple/orange-compare.

Your bike is worth twice the price of any SL!!! And ia wayyyyyy better equipped.
Would you mind sharing the bike's dry weight with us mortals?

Awesome work. Fantastic setup. Just GREAT, I am speechless. I can only bow down!

Thanks for the feedback. I agree. Many points of contention. First resale and investment. There isn't any. It's a throw away. I wouldn't know the first thing about an ROI strategy on a vehicle. Property, I get and to a lesser extent, traditional commodities but this is a buy it and forget it. I'm pretty sure that no one has recouped he cost of an off the floor SL or Desmo either unless it's an oddity. Moving on. Labor. Excellent point and obviously a cost consideration however the genesis of this post is based on an overblown debate weather "I" could build a better SL for less money. Except for machine work that required a special "mission only" process, I did every single piece of this thing so no I'd did not factor labor as the verbiage was rather specific. Had it read, "I could have had a professional builder, build me a better SL for less than the factory" then the contention would be valid. I don't know many personal builders who factor a labor cost to a hobby. Still a valid argument. Paint. Yep there isn't any but I still would have easily been under budget if it were painted. If It wasn't functional, it probably wasn't thought much about. Not taking anything away from some of the outstanding looking bikes here. This thing isn't much of a looker and I'm probably better off not owning anything that I'm concerned about banging up. If anything it's a R&D platform for future projects. I'm constantly swapping stuff on it that I make so I guess it's just a project. The stock SL is a beautiful bike but I knew if I bought one, I would end up swapping parts because you just do. For me this was a better decision and money had nothing to do with it. For me in my position, this makes sense. Gecko builds much nicer stuff than this. He does the mechanical stuff and finishes everything to perfection.

I think the joy of building something out-weighs any experience of walking into a dealership and purchasing a SL, that's called passion and art.

This is a very nice build, but there is still a difference from the SL and your bike. The SL models come with Ti con rods, which allow for the very lightweight crank. Ben Fox cannot replicate the SL crank without using the Ti rods. How do I know? Well, my crank was done by Ben and I asked him about this. Using the lightweight carillos, which I have in my bike get the weight on the crank lower, but no where near the SL cranks. So, the SL engines, 1199/1299 will still spin much faster than a BF crank, lightened with lightweight carillos. Lastly, lets not forget the Ti exhaust valves, that only come standard on the SL models.

No flame, like I stated above, still a very nice build. Hopefully she will be unleashed in her natural habitat, the track.

truly an 8th grade science project gone way too far - and missing he mark (as was known - but you do have good typing skills)

amazing build and love the passion.

Please post some pics

i think people are getting thrown off with some BS argument when we should really just appreciate the work and effort that went into this.

if you get a chance would you post the dry weight.

I enjoy the banter on here and maybe I try to get a bite, but at no point did I say you couldn't do it.

You forgot to mention the sense of achievement that you get from doing this as well no?

Pics and dyno run?

The time and effort needed to put something like this together would make my blood boil. Haha. There was a time back in the day when I had the patience and drive to do it. Not anymore.

If I could buy all these parts knowing that they would work without hassle the first time, sure it would be fun and rewarding. No doubt.

Sweet build. I too am curious what all that time and effort saves you in weight. I'd imagine quite a bit.

Nice build endo! Would love to see some pics, weight info, and dyno run if available to fully appreciate your incredible build. Thx for sharing.

Thanks for the notes. Yep no factory warranty. For me that was not even a remote point of contention. One, I can fix or replace anything on the bike without leaving the house as I have enough duplicate parts to build another bike and I have all the tools to do so. I have had this thing apart so many times I could do it sleeping and its pretty quick. So yes again, its not for everyone. In contrast I recently bought a MB 550GL. Full extended factory warranty. I wont even look under the hood. Anything goes wrong and its someone else problem. So yes its about where your at with what you want to get into. I have never had a warranty on a bike as I know its going to be in pieces after I buy it anyhow. Again thats not for everyone.

Weight. I don't know. Never weighed it. Its lighter than the SL. I could only speculate. Many of the pieces were chosen not for weight but because its what I would have chosen building from scratch. I use carbon and Ti fasteners in a lot of other projects (bicycles, aircraft, some car pieces for friends) so its just what I use.

Dyno. Again I don't know. Were going to take it to Attack and see some time. The HP should not have changed much. The motor work was to smooth out the vibrational harmonics, improve combustion dynamics, to reduce the weight of reciprocating parts to increase RPM capability and to improve reliability. There were a lot of little things done internally to make things a little more robust. The heads were massaged a bit, the ports were matched and blended, combustion chamber volumes were balanced etc. I would guess HP was increased a bit but again that was not the mission. Would be interesting to see the results.

I did not post pics as many pics have been posted in other threads and I figured that its "visually" old news.

Next on the list is a new exhaust. I have the ability now to make precision cuts, precision table jig and chamber weld Ti and want to make something of my own design. I buy all my materials through a government contractor so the material is very reasonable. From a material perspective, they are making a "BUNCH" of money off those Ti systems. $5000.00 for the Akra is absolute robbery and I have been "robbed" a few times.

I laugh at the guys comparing track times on these bikes. Like stated earlier most of us can't out ride a base 1199 let alone a SL. For those that can please let us know when your next race is going to be televised so we can tune in. I do understand the time/money argument but the "it has warranty" debate. Wake up! 80K bike and you are worried about warranty?! You shouldn't be on the damn thing if you can't afford the repair costs to begin with. Also the people who can afford this machine will either lock it up or actually track the damn thing; in which case they will most likely be "upgrading" certain aspects of the bike. So all they did was start with a platform that was semi built with a high premium entrance price and that I think is what the argument is here. Why start with a ridiculously priced platform if you plan on "making it your own"? This to me is a collector's piece with a few actually going to some guys that will track them. I for one started with a base and am modifying it to suit my abilities. The faster lap times will come with experience.

If someone did want something built and its not crazy time wise, I would do it for free. Additionally I give away a lot of stuff to anyone who is doing things right but maybe needs a little help. Im building some CF mirrors for a member here and setting up another member with drive parts for his 1199. No charge for the parts or labor. If I can help someone save some $$, get someone out of a bind or help someone get over a hurdle, I always give it a shot. I have been fortunate for sure and I try to pass it on. So if anyone needs something made and its not like a missile or something, hit me up and I will help as best I can.
