Ducati V4 SP WTF is it?

I for one am very happy they slapped the 1299/SL engine in my FE and the 1199/SL engine in my 15R. GO ME!

On top of those great parts the SP also has the Superleggera Stylema R brake Calipers, Brembo MCS master cylinder, custom (Melotti?) top triple clamp, and newer EVO-3 electronics. Considering all factors, I’m rather inclined to believe Claudio when he says most riders are faster on the SP than on the R.

You sure about that?

V4S = $28,400
V4SP = $37,000

Difference = $8,600

BST Rapid tek wheels = $4,050
STM dry clutch = $3,100
Carbon fiber winglets = $820
Carbon front fender = $400
Rizoma rearsets = $1,200

Accessories = $9,570

There's probably other accessories included as well. Plus you dont have to pay someone to re-paint your "big red blob" if you already like the way it looks.

I honestly dont understand the hate of the special edition bikes. Maybe a lot of it is ignorance and/or not being able to think for ones self and repeating the stereotypical "parts bin special" mantra. Maybe just jealous/mad they didnt get one? Maybe I'm just biased since I have one? I dunno. I think every single one of them is looks amazing and offers great value compared to the "regular" versions.

Oh and fyi - the SP does not have the R motor. A 5 sec google search is all it takes. Research and math are special skills these days.

So we have a lighter bike (V4R) with more HP and better suspension being slower than a stock S. Hmmmm

I don’t know who wrote that or how Duc is bending the rules this year

There is no R for 2021

S SP SL

No R. They mighta claimed there was gonna be and used covid as excuse but no R

The SP comes with a 520 chain whoopie : )

The reason for stating the average rider would be faster on the SP was not based on bike weight. The reasoning in their view and based on testing was 1103 engine made more power across the range and would be easier to ride than the high-strung R model.

It sounds good, as most riders are not ready to ride a true race bike the way it needs to be ridden. It could also be a marketing ploy but the GP & SBK racers all use the S model when practicing outside of their series.

Wanted to add that the wheels are not just BST's. Just the wheels and dry clutch are worth the difference from the S. I was tempted but going in a different direction. I will be ditching the E suspension on my Speciale and upgrading to standard Ohlins.

my dealer said no 21 R too, but I think maybe they meant nothing new on the R in 21? The ducati configurator still has the R on there. Also someone who seemed knowledgeable said you just needed 500 units of whatever you were running for homologation... if there's nothing new maybe they're good for 21.

Ha, devils in the details. SpeedofSound didn’t include “average” in his description of the riders he referenced. So they use their factory riders and test riders to promote a platform (v4R) but they themselves don’t actually use that platform for its intended purpose? More hmmmm

If Ducati were really selling a race bike it would be along the same lines as a Ferrari LaFerrari FFX-K, you own the license to drive it but Ducati do the rest.

Once you get your head around the fact that Ducati is in the business of moving product everything maka-da-sensa

They do support the platform with the use of the S model (likely because it is cheaper to maintain).

There are no rules here Don and Duc aint coming back.

All bikes should come with 520.

Smoked

My point was Ducati has now become monotonous in building “buffet” bikes with whatever they have left in the inventory, slapping a “your special” plaque on it and getting top dollar for it.
Ducati does it because it plays well into their target market segment, which based on a few I’ve ran into at the track, are mostly ignorant, and get lapped by 600s

this^^

"All the gear and no idea" is very, very common in equipment sports. I am a mid group group rider who gets passed occasionally (not that its a race) however many times I've seen middle aged men in fresh leathers, new boots on shiny V4's line up on pit lane that I expect to follow around or swap places with but to date nada, I pass them at my very average pace and never see them again.

I dont have a problem with that at all, beautiful expensive bike and fragile skin and bones but my point is that anyone who thinks Ducati is building a hard core WSBK for the street and that it should be ridden that way is probably over identifying with the brand to compensate for something :p

Paul, come on man! You said that you wouldn’t tell anyone about my riding ability.

On a serious note, I give props to anyone who participates in track days. These bikes are so fun on the track. I admit that I get jealous when a V4 passes me on the straight but nothing brings me more pleasure than passing it again in the turn.

On a somewhat related note, there was a guy on a superlegera at Chuckwalla earlier this month who smoked everyone! He and his buddy (who was also on a Ducati) represented Ducati well. They were absolutely flying.

The SPS models were the last true bikes built in very limited numbers that were road bikes that they had to build, to be eligible for WSB…when it (WSB) was owned by the Flammini brothers. Those were the days when they could build 250 road bikes that were close in spec to WSB, like when they needed extra air box capacity in the 996 but the existing trellis frame was not big enough…so they built 250 bikes with enough space to hold the bigger air box. This was back when Ducati was always on the brink of bankruptcy, even before the TPG bought them. Now that it’s owned by the VW group it’s just another arm of a large corporation.

Absolutely, getting out there on the track is a brave move for a lot of people and I have always said that you are entitled to enjoy your bike anyway that you want. We dont need to live up to anyone else's expectations.
