Was out riding my Streetfighter V4S …after a stop ,turned ignition on and bike asks me to enter 4 digit pin on dash .Scared the hell out of me ….turned ignition off and on again and the regular dashboard screen shows up and bike starts. This thing happened 3-4 times already but it also starts every time I turn off ignition and on again.Any idea what it could be?Bike has just 5000 kms on it .Thanks in advance!!

Do the streetfighters have a fob, or an actual key? The Multistradas have a fob, and if it's not close enough when you hit the ignition button, it will ask for the 4 digit pin. It's so you can still start the bike if you lose the fob or the battery goes dead.

They have a key with a chip that works with the immobilizer which is part of the ignition cylinder.

Trace the wires from where you insert the key.

No fob…it’s a physical key. Diavel and Multistrada have keyless start but not this one .This one takes actual key

Sound like the receiver around the key is either faulty or a poor wiring connection. They are cheap but if its not that but an intermittent wiring fault, that can be very frustrating.

Try using the other key that came with it for a super easy troubleshoot. Just on the off chance that its a key problem.

Maybe check with the dealer. I don't know if that would be logged in the ECU. Not an error, but the fact that it asked for the pin and why.

Thanks…will call dealer tomm

Thanks will do

It happened to me when my wireless phone charger is on. If you don’t know the pin try the last 4 of your vin. That’s what most techs set it as when the bike is preped

Thats the only new thing I did recently ….Charger for the phone .I have the optimate 0-100 SAE to USB adapter plugged in to the charging pigtail .You think this charging is related to the pin code and why ?I also tried the pin last night …..for me it wasn’t last 4 digits of VIN ,it was 0000 as I tried to modify pin through settings .I had to go to settings, modify pin as it wasn’t prompting for code again but I needed to know the pin ,just in case it happened again. .As I was writing this message,I was on phone with the dealer. The tech said it could be something on the keychain (a fob,ez tag /Some chip) which interferes with Bike immobilizer antenna and it prompts for the pin code.According to him ,if the black key doesn’t work once,it should always ask for pin and not intermittently.
So in my case ,it wasn’t the key fob or tag ,it was my phone mounted on handlebars right next to ignition and these phones have NFC chips/all the antennas/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth etc, which could have interfered with immobilizer.?Anyone has any idea if that could be the case of interference with immobilizer antenna?

The physical keys also have a fob in them. That way you can't just pick the lock.
Now I know what you meant …yes sir I’m aware of the immobilizer chip in the key but I thought you meant the keyless start where you just start the bike with key in pocket .Let’s see what happens next. Will observe the bike for a few days without charging .

Did another little test earlier….after theDealer tech told me about something causing interference with ignition immobilizer antenna,I moved my phone away from the handlebars and hooked my phone on the charger again (form bike SAE to USB to iPhone)
I think ,it my not be the phone interference with antenna .To replicate whole thing ,I hooked the phone on battery tender (SAE charger to USB) and shut the bike down .Now phone is plugged and charging for a bit even when bike is turned off ….and when I turn the ignition on it prompts me for the code .Phone is also away from the ignition. Now I can do it almost every time (replicate).Does battery charge has anything to do with pin?
This Optimate 0-100 USB adapter also has a smart cut off where it senses that bike is off and it shuts itself off till the bike starts again(that also stops charging the phone….basically it’s a feature for not letting battery drain when ignition is off ).Turn on the ignition, bike asks for pin …off and turn on again it’s back to normal.Maybe the USB adapter shuts off the loop and stops sending power to immobilizer antenna ?Again when I turn off/on again the system resets? …..Im just guessing….Any idea what it could be ?
