Hi all,

My name is Ashwin. Am originally from India but have been livin in the US since '06. I currently live in Minneapolis, MN and have been passionate about motorcycles since I started riding one about 12 yrs back in India.

I used to own a Honda 250cc which I rode for 6 yrs back home before coming over on work to the US. I passed the MSF course in 09 and got my license which even after my 6 yrs of riding made me realize that I was a total newbie. I was close to getting a Streetfighter back then but couldn't do so due to lot of personal factors.

Now that I am single again, the interest to own and ride one has woken up again in me.. have seen other bikes but the sound of a Ducati is something that stands out on its own which really made me like their bikes.. hoping to save up dough and get a bike in the next 1 or 2 yrs

Looking forward to discussing lot of Ducati related things and general things on bikes as always..

Cheers,
Ashwin

Am guessing unless I own a bike now, I don't seem very welcome here.. wish I had the money..

Hey man, no its not like that at all! We don't frequent this section thread that often!
Welcome here! In my opinion, the smartest thing you could do is BE ON THIS FORUM before you buy the bike. You'll learn a LOT about it. The good. The bad. The ....... awesome. So, you don't have a bike now? Hows your credit? Have a couple K$$K saved up? Remember, a base or even ANY bike now is better than waiting a year or two for an 1199. Be sure to check ebay in your hunt for a bike. I've seen base 1199's go for $12K from our great soldiers who are being deployed.

Enjoy the forum.

U got it spot on bro.. my ex hated bikes anyways and I hope my bike purchase would land me a smokin hot one at some point :D

I would buy used stuff it was a car cos I dont care abt those as much as I would for a bike for which I strongly prefer a new one due to the foll reasons (these r purely my thoughts which u guys may not agree completely)

1. Used bikes may have been modded with parts which you may not need or not know of..

2. Amount of abuse the bike has gone through.. crashes/major repairs done over its lifetime which may not appear on a vehicle history report

3. Quality of maintenance

I can prob fork out like 10k atm but I really do want a bike with ABS and which is very light cos I am a lean guy (5'8, 140 lbs) and the 1199 seems to be appropriate..

I know where you're coming from in every point you make.
I'm 5'10," and a total twig at 133 pounds and 1199 is a great fit. It worked with my small build even better after fitting DP rear sets and the taller comfort or/ race seat.

Yeah, no women who make you give up your bike. But you know that :-D

I'm also very hesitant about used bikes but remember most Ducati owners won't be moronic 17/18 year olds who wring the life out of these bikes like they would on say a Cbr600. The thing that kills me with new is the extra $3,000 in "fees" we pay. Freight, setup, dealer doc fees, full tax when buying dealer new. I know new is always our first pick but keep your eye on the site here as deals do come around that aren't too good to be true.

I don't even believe in a history report on a bike so the point you make is correct. Not much that happens is reported to a dealer/police unless its major. I've seen here a few guys whose bikes were torn apart on the track, with no insurance so presumably they'll fix the damage out of pocket, which doesn't get reported anywhere.

ABS is a great choice. I don't understand how anyone could say to not get ABS in today's world of wack drivers. You can always disable ABS, but you won't be adding it to a bike without it.

Wow.. really??? I thought I was being stupid by considering the 1199 for my size and lot of people who don't know much about bikes would think that its a total and utter mismatch.. I have seen MotoGP races to a decent extent and these guys are lean like us which enables them to have better control of the bike.. the lighter the better ;). Guess we both are on the same boat eh.

I was kinda making up a list of accessories to put on a Panigale R or the best superbike model that comes out in 2014/2015 and a seat fitting is a must after reading abt the hardness in the stock seat on a forum thread (the one on comfort vs racing seat breakdown). I have pretty long legs so the seat height factor shouldnt be an issue.

As far as ABS goes, I surely need it as it can prob prevent wheel locking especially on a wet surface and have me lose control.. In India where I come from, there is absolutely no traffic sense so people act like total lunatics on the road and with a bike, you just never know what can pose a threat out of nowhere all of a sudden.. I have been through quite a few close calls eventhough I must have been doing barely 25 to 40 mph. Looks like only the R has it as standard on both wheels and if added to the base or S/S Tri it only comes on the front wheel.

Hmm. Not sure where you read that about the ABS? On the base, it's a $1,000 option for abs. In the 2013 S models they only have an abs model $23,995, the Tri and R have the same abs as an S and a base with it. All abs is front and rear tire. You mayve been confused because on the Panigales when you activate Race mode, the factory setting for abs is a 1 (out of 3) and only sets front tire abs and disengages rear tire abs. Simply going into the bikes option menu allows you to bump the abs up to 2 or 3 while still in race (195Hi hp) mode.

Factory settings for sport and wet mode automatically have abs set for front and rear tire.

Hope that clears that up. An s with abs will probably be what you'd like.

You are right.. from what I have heard people have gone straight for the R instead of loading an S with goodies so I guess I will stick with the best there is. I am sure to still be jealous of the R even after having an S with ABS on it.. :p
