The 899 has a much higher final drive; a 44T rear sprocket.

I am still a car and cycling geek by nature. It needs less clutch feathering, although I still wouldn't recomend turning it at craving speeds in 2nd. Motorcycles I guess use final drive ratio term which Is opposite numerically of car gear ratio.

A larger rear sprocket and/or smaller front sprocket gives you shorter gearing and more bottom-end acceleration.
 
Especially whenever you are riding any "R" or special Ducati with a lightened flywheel, you need to keep the revs up and keep your feet down especially when starting off/turning at the same time. They stall fairly frequently. They also occasionally stall when coming to a stop and you pull the clutch at just the wrong RPM.
