Hard starting

My 998 and 1098 had same issue . If the bike hasn't started by at least three cranks turn the ignition off then turn it back on again .
Will 9 times out of ten start first crank .

Bike went in for first service this morning, 9am. It's 2:50pm and still not ready, dealer identified the issue and after talking to the Ducati Service Rep they said go ahead and remove the charcoal canister.

if nothing else it'll give you peace of mind, I only started pulling the canister on my bikes after my streetfighter had such a pressure build up on a long hot ride it split the paint!

I experience the hard start today:mad: I will be removing the canister tomorrow, I will report after. Wish me luck:rolleyes:

I've purchased and installed that upgrade wires kit from ebay...never had a problem with stalling, bike usually cranks after 4-5 seconds when cold. The replacement wires are a lot thicker than the stock ones so I'd imagine, it couldn't hurt! Cheap and easy mod.

I had a starting issue 2 weeks ago. I rode for about 30 min then had lunch for about an hour. I left the bike in the sun in Scottsdale AZ. It was about 107 at that time and the bike would not start. I tried several times although the motor would not fire. I gave a small amount of gas then heard a loud noise then as I press the starter again it would only activate the fuel pump nothing from the starter. I called Ducati Roadside and they sent a motorcycle only tow truck to pick me up to take me to the dealer. I was told it was the dash and it needed to be replaced. They replaced then called me to advise it was the starter. 5 days later I have my bike and it is running great.

Your problem may not be over yet. Retest the bike under the same or similar conditions and you may find that the hard start condition is still present. Then again, maybe not but I would do my best to replicate the issue to verify if I were you.

Good Luck,
Victor

Poor Starting or Failure to Start when Hot

Since the first weekend of operation in May 2012, the vehicle often fails to start after it has reached operating temperature in excess of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The condition existed prior to the 1,000 KM first service, after the 1,000 KM first service, and persists to this day despite the dealer's installation of updated fuel maps as they are released by the manufacturer. The condition exists regardless of the use of the stock OEM exhaust system or the use of the Termignoni racing (full) exhaust system and the associated fuel maps, all of which were installed by a qualified dealer mechanic.

Truth be told, it appeared for a while (during the winter and spring) that the issue was all but resolved; however, with the warm weather again high 80s and low 90s, the issue is back.

Turning the vehicle off and letting it cool often temporarily rectifies the issue; however, waiting for up to an hour for this to happen ranges from inconvenient to unacceptable, particularly since the issue may return once the vehicle's operating temperature exceeds 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and the vehicle must be turned off every 100 miles for refueling.
(My subsequent observation is that most fueling stations are on flat ground or at the bottom of a hill; few are on located on a hill.)

As of this date, the vehicle is currently at the dealer (again) in an attempt to rectify this issue.

I learned from a Ducati tech at Scottsdale Ducati....(Not a service adviser)

Let the bike idle for at least 30 seconds after a ride before shutting down. The computer will recalibrate and properly position it's self for idle speed the next time you start the bike.
Further, he indicated not to touch the throttle during start up or shutting down. Don't touch it...ever!

I have followed this and have had zero issues. The bike roars to life! No stalling, cutting out or difficult starts. Even further, when I failed to follow the simple instructions is when I encountered difficult starts. It's happened to me stalling in first gear at a light after being on the throttle. I never thought the bike was going to start after numerous attempts...lol... It eventually did, but it solidified to me the procedure for shut down is important.

I know it sounds pretty simple but it's easy to forget giving 30 seconds. Give this ritual a shot and maybe you'll have success.

A. 30 second idle before shutting down. Shut down with switch, then key.
B. No throttle input, just press start button.

I'm not having the problem, but I don't think this is too much to ask of those that do. They should give it a shot!

UK models dont and we still have the hard start problem when its hot.
Answering the question about the charcoal device. Does anyone here used or installed the HICAPII for the panigale, I had it on the 1098 and even though it didnt as stated started in 1s it was noticeably better, wonder if teh panigale would also benefit from it and give the starter and the battery a bit of a break.

Answering the question about the charcoal device (sorry new to the forum), still does anyone uses the HICAP2 device for the panigale? My first pani s was a 2013 jan build first crank every time in heat and cold after riding for hours stop then start no probs loved it from day dot tho did start to fog in dash but couldn't complain after hearing about the hard starting. Bike was in accident written off new bike 2013 s march build and is 4 days old and continues to some what struggle to start 3-5 cranks before starting and when a hot struggles even more. Going into duc melbourne to raise this issue on monday while im picking up some parts. Being in aus i have looked for the canister but cant see it or i could be looking for the wrong thing.

My experiences so far.

A couple of days ago my Panigale was completely retarded on the hot start issue. It wouldnt start multiple times throughout the day. It was really worse than it had been the week before. I got tired of it and set up a service.

Had canister removed at dealer today. That was the exact problem. Not only did it have fuel in it, it was totally my hot hard start problem. I made at least five stops on the way home (Intentionally) and drove for an hour on the interstate. Let it idle till it hit 216 and then shut it down...Every single time it started right back up, and even after I let it sit, hot, for 5 minutes, it started the first time.

My dealer is really damm good at listening to problems and fixing them. Great service department. I dont know what else they did (I was in a rush) but not only did it start and run weirdly better than before...My engine RPM dropdown between gears was gone. It shifts like my other bike now. No bog down or shaking between shifts. Now its perfect.

I have the hot starting issue on my 2013... Happened to me about 6 times over 1000miles so far.

If it happens, I turn the switch off, turn the key and wait 5 seconds. Then turn the key on, then the switch and wait for 2 seconds for the pump to do it's thing. Then start only with the start button (no throttle)... Usually starts the second or third time.

Don't keep the starter turning if it doesn't start the first time. It will only drain your battery! I also feel it's a fuel or fuel pump thing. So that's why restarting the whole process works for me.

I just hope it will not get worse over time.
