Hard starting

Synergy, seriously...go to the dealer and get them to "repair" (read: remove) the canister. It made a COMPLETE difference for me. I just got home and been riding all day. Started the first time every time. It never started the first time before the canister "repair."

Thats the entire problem.

My bike has 5300 miles on it and never had a starting issue. Rode it Sunday and start up no problem. Had Monday off and went for a quick ride but it took me a good 3-4 minutes to get it started from cold. Eventually fired up and rode great. Just running an errand so only on bike for 20 mins. Left sitting for an hour and although it started quicker than previous time it still took several attempts but again rode perfectly. Got home from work today (Tuesday) and went to try her and gave up after a couple of minutes. So not starting from cold. Always put on battery tender after a ride. Could this issue, that came out of no where, be a charcoal issue too? Any thoughts? I might pull it this w/e anyway? Txs.

I still wonder why some have this problem and some don't. I have absolutely no issues with starting in any condition. Went through summer in crazy heat and it still starts, albeit takes different amount of time depending, ranging from 1 seconds to about 4. It starts every time, just by holding the button down and nothing else. No mods to canister or anything. I will say that my battery is kept topped fully whenever in my garage. Knowing the importance of electrical connections I plan to regularly maintain the batt cable connections with dielectric grease. To me that part is user maintainable.

I bought my Panigale in May 2012 in New Orleans and ran it in the Mississippi heat and humidity from May 12 to Jun 13 and then moved to San Fran area and NEVER had an issue, never touched the canister but do keep the bike on a battery tender all the time and then out of the blue I get this cold start deal??

My starter went out on mine also. It took the dealership about one week to get another one in. Looks like they are keeping the part in stock and somewhat know about this issue. Thx Shawn

Reading through the problem.. and thinking "TERRIFIC">...........just spent $14,000 for the bike I been waiting on..and starter fails on 3rd start.

Seriously Guys???? I got rid of a BMW 7 series.. (WORST Car I ever had.. and most expensive......)....due to the thing having repeated and varied failures and constantly breaking.. and DIDNT buy a 1000RR due to BMW car experience........

Please dont tell me I am going to fight hard starting every time hot (and yes.. it started doing it the 2nd ride out)......and failures of the starter. I JUST got the bike back from dealer today ........catestrophic starter failure.. Commutator ripped off rotor....... and it was cranking and NOT firing.. gave a little gas.. and it backfired and jerked to a stop.....

Ive had this bike 1 week... They gave me a 899 panigale.. and IT hard starts also when hot.

idk.......... Never had this with Triumphs, Hondas or Kawi's. Is there a fix for this?? I heard Charcoal canister removal, and cracking gas tank fill to equalize...........

I asked the dealer on pick up of the bike if this is common. Service managers words "Its a Ducati. Hot start problems are a dime a dozen. Every bike does something different.. even out of the crates". Wow....

I asked "does it have latest up to date ECU map".. yes.

I got to page 5 reading comments.. so If I ask something answered.. I apologize. Flaming me will probably not be real welcome due to fact I havent even made first payment and I have had a failure on the most expensive Bike I have ever bought...

Helpful suggestion on fix are welcome........

I removed the carbon filter can, because it would cause this issue. NEVER had a hard start issue... Maybe you tried this already?

The handful of times I have had this problem, is when it is hot, and I turn it off for a short amount of time - say 10-5 minutes. I just give it full throttle, push start, and it starts right up.

FYI, you deserve to be flamed, coming on to a Ducati forum, and slamming the crap outa the bike, instead of just asking a question. I seriously think you were not cut out for one. So consider yourself "flamed" :D

Flame received.:D

As for just joining forum and expressing concern over a bike I just purchased.. I kinda feel the check I wrote to the dealer allows some leeroom to voice frustration and concern (and ask the question).. since I bought one. Maybe not.. but seems ownership in the product is different than coming in, and don't even have one on subject forum.

That said......

Called dealer/service manager to ask about how the reporting to Ducati is done, since appears to be pretty widespread problem (?) and I wanted to document for information back to them, and asked about the Canister seeming to be the problem/fix from what I read on here.

"I cant even talk about removing it, as its environmental requirement."

Question: Is there a service tech bulletin or something from Ducati? Or is this just something some dealers will do "under the table" to address the issue?

@ NOLA. Yes. I posted to the first thread.. and saw it wasnt active or didnt seem to be for nearly a year, and then saw this one which seemed to be more recent in google results. Sorry.. didnt mean to double post.

(Also have a question on rear brakes.. ask here or post in separate thread.. as dont want to cross link subjects.)...

Had the same hard starting issue and still do. I had the dealer inspect and Charcoal canister was almost full with fuel. They tipped it(charcoal canister) upside down and fuel ran out. They let it dry out for 24 hours and it worked for almost the whole Summer. It now starts hard again at high temps(200 and above). I was told Ducati will only warranty once because this is due to over filling the fuel tank. Well, I must of overfilled the tank again. ........! I have been very careful. I think the only answer is to remove the ....... canister. I don't want to incriminate my dealer, but it was recommended to remove it on my own. They would not do it. I don't blame them for EPA reasons, but I think there is a serious issue with the Gas tank over flowing. It Should be a warranty issue from top to bottom. great bike but absolute engineering ......!
