Hard starting

I lifted my gas tank, inspected my gas tank's vent hose and it was kinked really badly. Replaced the kinked hose to a better one....I will ride the Pani tomorrow morning and check if the Vent hose can solve my hard starting issues....

Termi Slip-ons with UpMap didnt solve it
New Updated map didnt solve it either
and I dont have a charcoal canister being a Euro version model...it also didnt solve it...

So I hope this Kinked Vent hose under the tank on the right side will solve it....Crossing my fingers!

Yup perfect...been using it for the past 3 sundays and no problem at all.
So far the cure was a kinked vent hose on the underside of the fueltank's right hand area. Just pulled out that damn vent hose which is positioned towards the rider... to prevent further kinking. VIOLA!!! Problem solved! Starts now even parked in direct sunlight after just 30mins rest...so far so good! I'm happy now.

Awesome. That may be what the dealer did but unknowingly when they replaced the pump on mine as well and when the others bypass the canister. Maybe a true root cause!!

Same as others, had the problem many times, removed the canister and have had no hard starts since. I guess the problem has to do with gas vapors and improper ventilation, be it caused by the charcoal canister or by a kinked hose.
By the way, for those of you in Cali, all my bikes have been registered there and never have I had to do a smog check nor have they inspected any of my bikes, let alone take the fairings off to check for the canister.

Now without the canister, I do get a faint smell of gasoline close to my bike when I leave it for a while in the garage and its still hot, but it is very very faint.

200 miles new.....experienced the "hard start" problem today for the first time. happened to be about 20min-30min after having shut the bike off.

alas,

Thank you, I'll add that to the list (idle it, little throttle, lot's of throttle, evap, fuel pump, etc.)!!! :)

It has been 700 miles since evap canister removal and not a single hint of hard starting at all.

removed it after yesterday's ride....will report back with my own findings.

Are we as a group absolutely positive the canister causes starting issues? I mean in 1800 miles, it has happened 3 times, and not for a long time now. The last 2 times, I gave it full throttle and it started. Could be a coincidence, but it started.

no absolutely not sure, but I removed mine because when my canister malfunctioned on the streetfighter, so much pressure built up it split the paint.

I've never had a hard start issue either before or after removal.

A properly set up fuel injected bike should absolutely not need to have the throttle twisted to get it to fire.

i've mentioned this before over at .MS.....of all the Ducati bikes i've owned, the only one whose tank "expanded" (split the paint just like yours Zvez) was a Streetfighter whose evap can i left on. i'm sure there's some degree of randomness assigned to it, but it's interesting nonetheless.

It's was a nice day a few weeks ago (2/13/13 to be exact) so I go to the garage and unplug my pani from the trickle charger (which was a solid green). My bike won't start. When I hit the start button you hear a click and the fuel going to the engine. After a few times of hitting the start button both engine lights come on and the oil light keeps flashing. I just rode the bike 4 days prior with no issues. The bike doesn't even turn over as if its trying to start or having a hard time starting.

Called the dealership and they installed a Ducati trickle charger that they said will keep the bike charged appropriately. I kept the bike connected to the new charger and the charger indicated it was charged fully.

I take the bike out yesterday (3/4/13) morning for a 2 min ride, I let the bike sit in the parking lot for 1 hour (cloudy day) come back and the bike doesn't start again!!! It did the same thing I mentioned above. I thought back to my GSXR days and I bounced one time on the seat and hit the start button the the bike started right up. What the hell????

I'm calling the Dealership again today to come get this resolved. Anyone have this problem before?

^That is not evap canister related. Hard start involves attempting to start but failing, just turning over and over. It would start with a full throttle, even then it would stall at times.

interesting.....did not have the "extended" hard starting conditions after having removed the evap canister.

so far, so good. :)

This sounds like a starter problem. We have had people here with burnt starters. In my opinion it is not related to the battery or the charger. I never use my charger, even when not riding for more than a month.

does not sound like the usual fumes or fuel locking up the charcoal canister.

Get your starter replaced.

So i did an update with the computer onboard and that seemed to fix the hard starting issue.

Then I was doing a ride in the canyon a few days ago and it happened again. The bike would not start.

I talked to the dealer in sf and they claim that if you wait until the bike's computer completely starts up (after it shows the green miles till next service) then you try and start it, that should fix the problem.

So far so good.
