I believe I have a solution. Will need to test it for another couple of hundred miles before I'm confident enough to mention it, but so far so good.
It's the equivalent of telling Katy Perry she needs to stop wearing low cut shirts and wearing turtlenecks...

The new bikes, including my '14 1199R, look like the catalog photos posted above by zx7md. The header guard on the R is CF and extends further down the right side, with a second metallic layer beneath. The rear head is covered. I'm not so bothered by the (CF) header guard as I am by the rear head being shrouded in plastic. Funny thing is, I kept looking at the rear head as though something was amiss, but didn't realize it was the (new) heat guard until seeing this thread.
