Help needed - problem with gear position sensor and DQS (Ducati V4 2018)

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I have the translogic QS and it is really good compared to stock but the biggest change is the evo2 software that fixes the to long a cut time.

That said my gear position sensor failed the the translogic QS installed as well.

So unfortunately the translator QS is not a fix. Thanks Motzarelli.

Just to be clear it is better than stock and also I went through 2 OEM ones under warranty that crapped out. It won’t however shorten the cut times which the Evo 2 did

So I did the sensor mod in this thread as in used some fiber washers as spacers for a small air gap and cooling fin blocks.

Only problem now is I can’t get the dash to read the right gear. It changes but is out of sync. I tried having the dash show first which is actually fourth and then turning the ignition off, removing the sensor, moving it into first and then refitting the sensor and switching on the ignition and it is still out of sync.

Any ideas how to sync the gear position sensor to the dash???

Take the spacers out. If the unit fails when hot, replace the unit.

Others have done this with the spacers so should be able to use them.

Not sure how this sensor registers what gear it’s in? Anyone know?

Have others done it on this bike, or on previous models? I've read about people trying this on the previous models.
The problem appears to be that your sensor is faulty. It may not be temperature related.
Also, the way of the ecu relearning gear position on previous bikes, doesn't work on the V4.

My sensor was a new one and was working fine.

I just wanted to help it’s lifespan by reducing some heat exposure.

So it sounds like there is a gear position learning procedure? Anyone know what it is for the V4

There isn't a learning procedure for the V4

Took my bike to the dealer and they tried to relearn the gear sensor to the bike and it wouldn’t take. They said the sensor is stuffed again. Part is 2 weeks away in Italy. Trackday is 10 days away.

I asked about buying a spare sensor so when the next one goes which will no doubt happen I can fit a new one and get going. They said it won’t work until it gets synced with the bike via the computer

mine is going to Ducati Austin this week. some shops must have sensors in stock. i asked about the frequent sensor failure issue and the potential benefit of using an insulating spacer. the tech explained that there has been a revision of the sensor due to so many failures with the original, and that they aren't seeing failures with the newer revised sensor.

anyone else heard this?

Very interested in this.

Can you ask for the old and new part numbers

Hi All: an update from my digging around. I have a 2020 V4 that I use for track only. I’m on my 3rd gear position sensor. After some trial and error with my Ducati tech, we suspect that the sensor is failing as a result of heat coming from the engine case. The suggestions that putting a spacer behind the sensor is in line with this cause.
After doing some digging and asking various Ducati techs, ducati appears to be aware of this problem and have a replacement/superseded part that addresses this. They are choosing to get rid of their faulty part inventory first before they start sending the new pieces.
My tech also set up a V4 SL and noticed that the SL has a spacer that comes stock with its gear position sensor AND has a built in vent that directs air directly onto the sensor to cool it down. If you’re still in warranty, you may want to push to have those parts installed on your V4.

That’s great news. Now I just need to fight my dealer to get the new part and spacers...

Nothing I haven’t had to do before!
