Honest question. base vs s vs r

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I am in the same boat i have a deposit for an R but after seeing the specs i don't see this iteration of the R model a thru R just a souped up S.

I think i will probably cancel my R and get a base model with BST wheels and austin racing exhaust changing the rear damper and front internal cartridges and still save alot of cash.

But the 1098R and 999R had completely different engines to the base and S models whereas the 1199R engine is pretty much the same except with different conrods so i don't think the servicing will be drastically different.

Whilst in theory what you say is true... Stealerships will use the R factor to inflate prices on any servicing on this bike...You watch...

no the y'all was a quote from duc le smart i dont know why it didnt quote right. Trust me y'all isnt in my vocabulary. not that there is anything wrong with it :D

I think this has been discussed multiple times in past threads.

Base w/ABS - if you want to ride the crap out of the bike, plans track days, suspension tuning, upgrades

S - keep it as is, great street, weekend bike, slap on a Termi

Tri - you are paying for the color scheme, for $3k over the S, you can buy the termi and DDA

R - Sponsor Racers or people will lots of $$$, or Racers with lots of $$$

The forged alloy wheels are a huge plus in my book, and I know that I'd switch out the base suspension for an Ohlins kit in time. Throw in a couple of additional goodies and the S becomes worth the price of admission to me. I'm not saying that the base isn't an exceptional bike, it is, and offers great value, it all comes down to what you want, what you think you need, and how you value the sum of those parts.

You can't lose either way. If I only had "base money" it wouldn't hold me back from its purchase. ;)

Best success,

Hey don't forget, the R may have titanium rods, but the base has titanium valves and a genuine plastic front fender, not some stupid CF one ... :)

It's true that any new bike is a bad investment, and resale value should be low on the priority list if you are going to ride the bike. That said, history has not been kind to R bike values in the past, and the residuals are way worse than the base and S models. The 1098R was much more highly differentiated from the other 1098s (compared to the 1199), and they've lost way more value (as a % of MSRP) than the base or S versions of the 1098.

Personally, I'm torn between an S/ABS and a base/ABS then adding forged aluminum Marchesinis, and aftermarket Ohlins forks/shock/steering damper. In the latter case, you'd end up with better looking wheels (IMO), probably higher quality suspension (albeit without the electrically adjustable damping), for the same price as the S. Lower if you sell off the stock parts.

Decisions, decisions...

my dealer has quoted $2308 for first major service on n "R"....seems the same as past r's

get a base, and add what you want. unless you race there is no reason to get any other version....the bike is plenty powerful enough. and what more do you want than owning a Panigale.... everyone will be in awe seeing you on a panigale..... if you get more than a base then you are only trying to impress other ducati riders. tri-color I can understand for the paintjob but for the price you can get a actually paintjob for less than that instead of what they've done with just putting on vinyl and clear coating it. this is just my opinion, I think for the difference i price after you walk out of the dealership you could have bought a base model and customized it how you like

I have the base version without ABS. Put a GP quickshifter on it. Carbon protectors on the alternator/clutch case. TTX MK II shock and 30mil Nix Ohlins Cartridges sprung to my weight. Ohlins adjustable steering damper. Next step will be forged Magnesium wheels. This bike is a freaking demon. LOL

One word. GOLD.

(I'm vain like that.)

Every time I look at my bike and I don't see gold I feel sad. Get the S. :)

there's a hint of truth behind this...

every time i look at my base, i think, what do the others have, what's missing on mine ??? ;)

then i go back and read this: http://ducati1199.com/ducati-1199/3...99-panigale-s-vs-ducati-1199-a.html#post45700
and think: if a racer can ride out half a second, what could i do???
:D:eek::D

in terms of feelings, if you can afford to get the "best" go for it. if you have to make sacrifices and they don't kill you, still go for it.
if you are a realist, and compare your capabilities to the ones required to ride the bike within its means, go for ... well, any one of the wonderful, fast beasty 1199

I'd like to see the line item detail of where that money is going before ever stepping foot in that dealer again.
