MOTODOC HERE.
I AM NEW TO THE FORUM AND HAVE ENJOYED READING THE INFORMATIVE POST HERE FOR THE PAST MONTH. I RECENTLY PLACED A DEPOSIT FOR A 2012 DUCATI 1199 PANIGALE S TRICOLORE :D. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF SELLING MY 2010 BMW S1000RR.
IT SEEMS LIKE EVER BIKE I SWITCHED TO HAS A MORE COMPACT/ CRAMPED COCKPIT THAN THE PREVIOUS BIKE. 2004 ZX-12r (SPACIOUS WITH TOTAL WIND PROTECTION) TO 2008 GSXR 1000 (CRAMPED WITH EXTENDED WINDSHIELD OFFERED DESCENT WIND PROTECTION), TO 2010 S100RR (PAINFULLY CRAMPED BEFORE ADDING ERGONOMIC AFTERMARKET PARTS-MRA OFFERED THE BEST WIND COVERAGE WITH MINIMAL BUFFETING). I HAVE NOTICED THIS TREND EVERY SINCE, IN 2004, KAWASAKI INSERTED A LITER MOTOR INTO 600cc FRAME AND CALLED A ZX-10r. EVERY MANUFACTURER CONTINUES TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE ON THIS CONCEPT(WHILE TRYING TO MAKE THE BIKE RIDABLE WITH ELECTRONIC GIZMOS AND FORWARD WEIGHT BIAS TO KEEP THE AVERAGE RIDER FROM JUST GOING 12-0'CLOCK ON IT AS SOON AS THEY TWIST THE THROTTLE).
I ALWAYS GET CONCERNED WHEN THE MAJORITY OF MARKETING PHOTOS SHOWS THE BIKE IN A CURVE AT FULL LEAN ANGLE WITH THE RIDER HANGING OFF, AS THOUGH THEY ARE TRYING TO CONCEAL HOW ERGONMICALLY CRAMPED THE RIDING POSITION ACTUALLY IS CONSTRUCTED. THE MORE CRAMPED THE BIKE, THE GREATER THE LEAN ANGLE IS IN THE PHOTO:eek:.
I AM 5'11'', 180 LBS (DOWN FROM 196LBS- GETTING IN SHAPE FOR THE UP COMING SEASON)
QUESTION: SHOULD I EXPECT THIS BIKE TO BE TO HAVE AN EVEN MORE PAINFULLY CRAMPED RIDING POSITION?
THANKS,
MOTODOC

From what I've heard from the taller riders that have sat on it , it sounds like it's not cramped at all. The bars are a little higher and wider than the 1198. And I believe the pegs are a little lower. I think you'll fit on just fine.

THANKS 2012DUCATI 1199 AND 512BB FOR YOUR INPUT.
Of course I am going to be on the receiving end of a new model change again, so I am a little concern. But it seems like it worked out for the BMW S1000RR (not many recalls, and the bike lived up to the hype), and with Ducati's racing heritage, this bike will probably live up to this companies expectations as well. So I don't mind contributing to the real world R&D in conjunction with the racing R&D that is going to help to make this bike the PINNACLE of the Ducati lineage of bikes (I'm sure Ducati engineers are watching the post on this forum very closely).
I know one thing for sure, this forum is going to be the best resource in getting PANIGALE owners up to speed on what to do for the bike, to ensure that all concerns are addressed expeditiously.
Thanks again

2012 PANIGALE S TRICOLORE (ORDERED)
2010 BMW S1000RR (FOR SALE)

Just curious , What you did'nt likes about your BMW S1000RR ?
Because for me , is the lack of midrange grunt.

hi, i also change my s1000rr to the panigale s.
for me its the prefect size a bike could have because I am 5'7" at 165 lbs.
i think the BMW is easier to handle for someone whos taller than me.
the 1199 is a very very small bike.

At 5'11" you'll fit on the bike as it's intended but remember, this bike is designed to be raced in world class competition.
The racers on these bikes are often freakishly small people so smaller is better for them.

It's as small and as light as they can go and still meet meet world licensing criteria.

If you want something more comfortable there are certainly other bikes available, but if you want a street legal race bike you're going to have to fold yourself up to ride any of them.

It is the smallest liter class Ducati SBK yet.

Max 299. The rr is pit pull. I can't imagine another stock bike will be made to match its power. You are right, it is massively top heavy as far as the power band is concerned. You really have to wrap your mind around the power delivery curve, in order to be comfortable on the bike.
However, what i am dissatisfied about is the dealership customer service. This is a full on race bike with no dealer infrastructure in place to support customers who want to put after market mods on, so that you can tune the bike ergonomically or for performance. If it is not a horizontal opposed twin, the service dept has a melt down (unless all you want is an oil change). I don't have a road racing center near me to help me mod the bike out. Very frustrating!!!

I was trying to say that, "the RR is a PIT BULL"!

OMG, Please tell me that this is a photoshop pix. The bike can't be that small. Manufacturers should put a height and weight restriction on a bike when they sell it to the general public. I'm not looking for a goldwing. But when you are transitioning the bike thru turns, it is difficult to position your body without upsetting the bike. This can effect your entry line. Hard to gain confidence on the bike in this situation.

ALSO, if adjustable foot pegs are fabricated aftermarket for this bike, how much will there be in adjustability without putting your feet in direct alignment with the opening of the exhaust (Talk about having a hot foot!) or placing your heels in contact with the rear tire...?

The rearsets on this bike are mounted similarly to a radial brake caliper.
I think it will be difficult for the aftermarket to manufacture a set of rearsets for the 1199 and so I believe that we will have few options.
At least in the beginning.

I sat on the 1199 and the 848 back to back on Friday and I thought the 1199 was actually more comfortable. I am 6 ft tall and weigh 215 lbs. I ordered the DP adjustable rear sets and the taller race windscreen for my 1199 as it is a track bike.

I'm just saying, if you look at the times from 2002 WSBK and 2011 WSBK, there is only a few 1/10th of second difference in the results. Now I know that those differences take millions of dollars in R&D to get to, and can make the difference in race results (potentially), but have the engineers fully embraced the theory:"the smaller and more compact/ cramped the riding position, the lower the times?" Give me a break, next thing you know, the riders' body will be a stress member for the bike:(.
In reality, with all the physical forces that have to be overcome on a race track to significantly lower times. Unless they come up with a formula 1 like solution with aerodynamic wings that create massive downforce (with full dynamic adjustability), or turn the road race course to a drag strip layout, it doesn't matter how much you have to contort your body into the most ball-like manner, YOU CAN ONLY SHAVE 1/100TH OF A SECOND FROM ANY TIME IN THE BEST CONDITIONS!!!
Can they just stop shrinking the bikes' riding position and find another solution to make the bike more competitive. Or, concede the fact that the bikes are only manufactured for people that are 5'6'' (or shorter) with weight limits of 140 lbs!!!

The issue is weight more than size. The larger a bike is the more it weighs. I think they should offer a 1199SC with the C meaning Clydesdale for us normal humans! 15% larger LOL.

Big guys are worried about it being too small, and us little guys have to worry about being able to put our feet down!

Thanks for the link bwaide. I am able to compare my S1000RR to the Panigale, to get an idea of how ergonomically I will be challenged with the Panigale. Well, back to my Yoga class...

Just looking at the Magny Cours Race-2. Comparing 2006 (winner-T.Bayliss) to 2011 (winner C.Checa), and in 5 years with the evolution of technology (motor, electronics, suspension, chassis, tires, exhaust, brakes, exotic metals...) , although there are statistical differences, I am not sure you can justify down-sizing the cockpit of the bikes into tuna fish cans? C.checa's fastest trap speed during the race 282.7/ T. Bayliss 282 Km/h. They both had the Fastest lap during their respective races: C.Checa:1:39.136 to T. Bayliss 1:40.370. WERE TALKING 1.2 secs, give me a break.
I would rather have a standard cockpit with exchangable seats to fit the height and inseam of the rider (allows for broader adjustability), vs a shrunken cockpit with limited adjustability (either you fit it or you don't)...!
What's next, placing a liter motor in a minimoto bike...?
