IMA THUMB BRAKE?

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I just did a track day where Toni Elias was providing lectures and he said he uses his thumb brake all the time, with typical braking force at 60% F and 40% R. He does this to "settle" the bike.

60f/40r?

My understanding is typical automotive bias is ~80/20 and tylpical bike bias is ~90/10.

That’s thumb brakes takes a lot of finesse. After going off track twice while trying learn to use mine we adjusted it to soften the braking power when you push the lever I’m probably 60 or 70%.

So I’d say it where it’s at now it’s probably an 85/15 or 90/10 front to rear brake bias. Much easier to use that way.

Sure. My point was that I think the theoretical max a motorcycle rear brake can contribute to the braking effort (assuming the front brake is being used appropriately) is ~10%.

from what I remember Tony Elias rides bikes with minimal electronics relying on more old school riding techniques
I would like to use a thumb brake on the new bike to see, I had IMA for last bike but I never put it on and just ended up selling it. Would love the brembo setup but it costs a fortune

He’s riding a brand new R1 last time I saw him.

I’d do the index finger version over the thumb brake, seems like it would be easier to modulate, under hard braking it’s hard to not overdo the thumb brake as you body is being thrown forward, easier to pull to modulate the rear brake than push.

talking about Tony on his race bikes
thumb brake doesn't seem to be an issue for some other prefer scooter brake - looks insane to me visually

Never seen a good above shot but Rea's levers look pretty convenient, I "assume" the upper lever is the clutch?

Hey Karl you gotta stop buying all that good stuff and selling it 5 minutes later to the poors on this forum, then you can afford the brembo work of art!
