IMU mounting after installing track fairings

I can report in a week from now with my self implemented bracket solution, see above. I hope it works and I will find out at MSR Houston.

Hello all. Just returned from NJMP. I wish I had good news for everyone. Things looked promising at first. I went out at about a 65%-75% pace. Everything worked very well. I had high hopes for the next session. Went out 1st lap about 75%. 2nd Lap gave her the beans. And guys she didn't like it at ALL. Internal Sensor Warning. BBS Warning. Yellow Triangle with exclamation point lit up. GRRRRRR. When back to our pit. Put more rubber damping on it. Went out 3rd session it was much worse. 4th session tried to go just a tad tighter on the org 1st session try out. Same results if not a bit worse than the 2nd session. At this point we were out of ideas and options to try at the track. So we packed it up and went home a good bit early. NO ONE LIKES TO DO THAT!!!

So it is back to the lab boys. I will keep you posted. At this time I know for sure the 45 degrees on the IMU made a massive difference with allowing me to ride at an easy pace. This pace would be the equivalent to a intermediate rider. My pace when tires and suspension are on point is expert/pro. I ride Black Expert/Pro in most organizations. So that will give you an idea to when I say I am riding at 85%. I rarely ride above that on track days. I may put in a 90% percent lap but that is just to see how the bike is reacting to a recent change on something.

On a good note we solved the fuel tank venting problem we were having the with WSBK fuel tank. The 2nd gear issues was an easy fix. The Corsa linkage was binding a bit. Lastly, we solved the brake binding issue with a small change to the wheels spacers. Cost us a set of $400 brake pads but that the cost of a fully custom WSBK front end.

My next move may be to try DB Holders, maybe mount the org plastic IMU holder to the Motoholders with OEM rubber isolaters on the left and right or go back to stock as a reference point start over to make sure I am not missing something else. I really don't want to go back to the stock unit. That is a last resort. I don't give up that easily.

Stay tuned. Welcome to the land of building Superbikes guys.

If anyone else has luck please post details of what you did. It would help us all.

Best

i emailed moto holder and their response is less then satisfactory

Hello if you were buying this fairings holder, you were asking if this fairings holder has the bracket for mounting IMU sensor, and we have answered you that it has. This fairings holder has the bracket for IMU.But now we can not tell you why your bike tells error, our fairing stay is RACING product, not stock one and IMU sensor is original mounted in light, also at this fairings holder we had no possibility to make bracket at same place as at original. Also I am affraid we can not help you with this issue with electronic.many regards

I’ll post this link here one last time. I posted a thread on a fix for this. Tested at Thunderhill and it works.

thank you I have seen it and was going to try it

it looks similiar to what blade runner did, why do you think yours worked and his did not ?

Two things are very important. One is the angle and second is the dampening. The way it’s dampened is crucial. Without the spacer/collar, the rubber grommets get compressed to where you don’t get their benefit. With the spacers, you tighten down the IMU and the grommets still work for dampening. When designing this last season, I made the ears wide enough to add extra grommets there also if needed. I did my testing at the Ridge in Washington and Thunderhill in California. Both tracks with plenty of elevation changes.

Hey thanks Twistedracer! I am going to try to dampen mine better. I am also going to get rid of that terrible square post like you did as well and make a better one. The more I read about trying to control vibration the more my head swells, LOL! There is so much that goes into it. I found out that my frequency of vibration is between 100hz and -200hz. I used a RPM to Hz conversion table for this. I also found out that Ducati was also using the benefit of the weight of the headlight to help dampen the vibration. That is why you, me and many other are having so much trouble trying to isolate something that is very light by it self. I hope to have a new version later this week on the bike.

Your setup was on the right track. Where it failed was not having a collar fo keep your grommets from becoming too hard when tightened down. It wasn’t till last season that I had the time to chase down the issue.

The 1299 is a pain in the arse when trying to use the IMU with track fairings . I lost 2 years of confidence with errors and working inconsistently. Motor Holders cant even weld a bracket square to mount the IMU. I purchased this from Motocorse in Italy and fixed all the issues , not cheap, but worth it. The mount HAS to be mounted at the factory angle and must be isolated from RPM vibration . A piece of insertion rubber wont do the job I'm afraid (tried all of that).

Oh yes! I’ve been tempted by that piece so many times lol. Fortunately I finally made my mods for the Motoholders work.

I can report back, my self invented bracket (posted earlier here) works just fine. Was at MSR Houston yesterday - no problems at all.

Just returned from another day of testing at NJMP Thunderbolt. And I can say FINALLY. Success!!!! My teammate 3d printed a new carbon IMU mount to rivet to the motoholders unit. I took Twistedracers advice and removed the IMU square mount and plate. Took our newly carbon printed mount and used some material from a former DuPont employee that was designed to cancel vibration. That material must be special. He only gave me enough to complete the job. Looked like normal foam to me. LOL!!! And BOOM!!! No more errors!!!

I think it’s safe to say the examples you guys have come up with are the final fix and a lid can finally be put on this issue.

Blade runner is there any chance you would be kind enough to share the plans for the 3D printing? I’ll try and find somebody here in the uk that could knock one up for me.

I will ask Bill (my teammate) if he would like to share it. And I can it post here for everyone to use.

Freaking Motoholders. 5 years of this BS and now we are all finally finding great solutions. So glad to see others making this work as well. My teammate said he would share the files. So as soon as I get them I will post or send to who ever would like to use them.

Best
Blade.

Not to chime in at the 11th hour on this but I assume Pierobon front stay didnt have this issue?

@Blade Runner nice to meet you this weekend, glad the rest of your day went well. I had to jam down to Pitt

Great question about the Pierobon. I really don't know. I would think unless you solve the vibration issue you are still going to have problems.

Hope you had a blast at Pitt Race!!!
