k&n oil filter Update

Well ladies and gentleman its about that time again to change the oil and our friends at K&N now make an oil filter for the 1199 (12 bucks too). The problem is the O rings and washer. K&N doesnt seem to make those or are they built in the filter? Am i really going to have to go to ducati for these items? Does anybody know a different source?

I just changed my oil last weekend using the same filter. My o-rings and washer still looked brand new, so I reused them. No leaks whatsoever, even after a hard ride. You may be able to get away with doing the same.

I paid $1.07ea for the washers (qty5) and $7.00 for O rings (for just in case) at Ducati. I also bought a Scotts Oil filter ($89.00) expensive but its a lifetime oil filter and the best oil filter out there period. it filters down to 35 microns without obstructing flow. When I change my oil there is no metallic particles on the magnetic drain plug only on the the filter which you can easily clean out . I figure 3 oil changes paid for the filter. I change my oil often, every 3K miles vs the 6K Ducati recommends. The o-rings really don't need replacing unless you damage it while taking the oil filter cover off. there is no Oring on the filter itself.

dont know how true this is but i am hearing on the bmw sight for the hp4 that the k&n oil filter gets too saturated with oil which will restrict air flow for the bike. anybody every hear of this? can this be true and if so would it be true for the 1199?
 
AIR filter yes, oil filter no..

You don't want to dunk your k&n air filter into an oil bath as common sense would dictate
 
Not all oil filters are created equal, I use KN air filters on our races cars and my personal vehicles, I do not use their oil filters on anything. As I will never use a fram oil filter on anything, I had the media collapse and drop oil pressure on a small block 400, new filter new oil, cut the filter open to verify. AC Delco, or Wix never a problem.
Saving money on a filter, or oil has never been a priority for me, Ducati spent considerable time and money developing their filter and I for one will keep buying them.
The real test would be an oil pressure gauge real time dyno test and compare pressure, finer filtration equals pressure drop.

My experience & not 2cents, highly recommend you Do Not use Sc---- S/Steel filter, or any other metal mesh filter, metal mesh is a 2D filter media while the paper is 3D filter media, looked under microscope 1000's of tiny paper hairs are capable of trapping & filtering higher practical media than there micron filter number would suggest, I have seen the wear results myself & threw the metal filter away, I know if you google you will reports & lab tests, of course you will also find praises because people love the idea of a washable 1 time filter, I know it will upset many, but I'll not use 1 again.

Don't you think if it was the ultimate it would have been on the D16RR & the SL ?

I've been using Scott's for gosh I don't how long been too long to count. I have used Scott's on all my dirt bike/street bikes/high end cars and trucks that rev really high and not once I had wear to my engine/leaks that are caused by dirty oil. Every mechanic I know recommends and uses Scott's. And no OEM doesn't use these filter or any other aftermarket parts that are better because they are too expensive for production. But I know a lot of professional teams and club racers that uses Scott.
 
Ducati oil filter for me everyday.
BMW oil filter for me everyday.

I will not go cheap on such a crucial component of these $10,000+ engines. Never.
 
Ducati filter for me, inc O ring & crush washer. All day long

Mesh filters :- it's your engine & money, carry on .....,,,
 
Take a look at the drain plug magnet on your next oil change. The crap that is on it is what is getting through the filter/or through the bypass/ pressure relief on the Ducati filter that is cycling through your engine and by the way the bypass/pressure relief on the Ducati filter is what sucks IMHO. I wouldn't want that crap cycling through my engine. I'm pretty hard on my clutch and my Drain plug is always clean with my Scotts oil filter. I am no way sponsoring/promoting Scott's and not trying to convince anyone here to switch over. Just threw that out as an alternative. After owning 29 various bikes, raced over 10 different bikes and I have always used Scott's and never ever had any problems.
 
k and n oil filter

anybody use these yet? if so do they need the gaskets or not?
 
What gaskets are you referring to?

The oil filter element is a cartridge.
 
an oil change consists of the cush washer and 2 gaskets you are "suppose" to change each time. one goes on each end. do you need these for the k and n filter
 
I'm pretty sure this was answered in your post with the exact same title from a couple weeks back.

Anyways... I used the K&N for my last oil change. The "gaskets" refer to the two o-rings that seat on the inside of the oil filter cover. They do not have to be replaced unless you damage them while removing the oil filter cover...or if they're just old and look like crap. There are no gaskets on the filter itself.

At least I didn't see/replace any, and my bike hasn't exploded yet.
 
I'm going to do an experiment , purchase a selection of aftermarket & OEM filter cut them open, measure the flattened filter area, quality of media & oil bypass valve that clear up if it's worth running non OEM
