Let's see, who invented the modern, full fairing, brightly colored, fast sport bike?

That would be Kawasaki with the original Ninja 900 - before I saw one I never gave a rip about motorcycles. Saw a guy hauling ... on one in red leathers and bought one the next year. Everyone who came after should be thanking Kawasaki for inventing the genre.

The GSXR750 was the next major step forward, and Ducati's 916 plays a part after that, which Yamaha absolutely copied with their 1998 R1, but sport bikes would not be where they are now without the Japanese, so the snob stuff is laughable to me, and "Ducatisti" sounds like something some chick wiped her ... with...

Ducati did .

Not sure what year that is, BMW was sellling the full fairing RS in the 70s, but it was more of sport touring bike - used to ride with my dad on that one

These started in 74 . Came with a race kit single seat full fairing the original true Superbike available for the street Ducati 74 750 SS .
Not built for touring .

Doesn't move me at all - the 1984 Ninja did, it looked fast standing still

70s bikes looked kind of boring in general, and they sure weren't fast (or particularly safe at high speed), BMW may be an exception to this...

Just shows how little you know . The long wheelbase of the bevel SS bikes made them fantastic and high speed .

We talk about 1299s here. You know, the bike that weighs the same as an R6 but makes double the power and triple the torque...

Umm not quite. The 1299 makes 200 crank HP, R6's make about 130 hp (crank).

The 1299 makes about 90ft/lbs of torque, R6's make 40-44 (mine makes 53).

The first real mass produced superbike in my eyes was the GSXR 750.

I was speaking hyperbolically, of course ;)

1299 makes 106.7lb/ft crank torque, which is, well, that's quite a bit. I've never seen a factory stock 600cc supersport rated 50lb/ft or greater.

So to be precise, two and a half times the torque. But that doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely :p

Oh, and one point five seven times the horsepower.

you mean the R90S, of course.

as quaint as it appears now, the R90S really didn't see a spiritual successor until the S1000RR, although boxerheads would argue the HP2 Sport.

Retitle this thread, "the forum's most annoying thread not started by Mark". Between Kismet and FZR, Mark and WhitePani have grown on me...hey guys, wanna grab a beer? Who would've thought trolling is so much less annoying than know-it-alls?

I was reading it thinking, "Yup, this is why TJ quit posting here". Although I see he still logs in frequently.

If we are talking at the crank, I'd bet almost all of then are around 50ft/lbs. MW bikes typically make 39-44ft/lbs at the wheel.

Mine makes 53 at the wheel, but it is far from stock. :D

Not talking about wheelbase - shows how little you know - I'm talking about brakes, suspension, frame torsional rigidity. Wheelbase is a small part of safety at high speed equation

What would you buy with $1500 in mods allowance for the 1299?

A seat you dont slide around on (because even after 4 model years now ducati still refuses to put a good seat on their $20,000-$34,000 superbike), mirror block-offs, tall windscreen, and some slicks and you're almost there...

Have you got a acquired brain injury ? Your names not TYE by any chance ?

Whatever...typical condescending aussie ........, kiss my .... What you posted was a joke

absolutely. out of the box stock, or with a full exhaust and map *only*, it's just a matter of personal taste preference between the RSV4, S1000RR, and 1299S. I still own my S1000RR; it's the power king, the street-friendly king...it's just a pig to hustle around a track, and I've taken a good 25lbs off of my bike from stock.

It's ALL about the torque :)

I'd have to argue that. I did an entire track season last year on an 1199R and found the bike felt 20 pounds heavier in the turns, while I just tracked my HP4 for the first time ever a few days back and it feels 20 pounds lighter in the turns. Again, it all comes down to personal preference. None of the magazines should mean anything to us. All of these bikes have pros and cons. (okay, the honda just cons- outdated by 10 years much)...
