was the weight on pani a little heavy? Power to weight the bmw shouldn't have been that much faster its almost 30 pounds heavier and has 7 extra hp

Again they couldn't launch the 1299, otherwise it would have been right there, but S1000RR would still have the terminal speed

I am new to owning a Ducati. Have always wanted one. Ex-road racer #896 WERA and AMA. I think it is fun reading everyone's input on this drag race. If it was just about numbers I am not sure if I would have bought the Duc. However I bought this bike because of how it makes me feel. For these 4 bikes. Aprilla, DUC, BMW and Yam to be so close in weight, track time, top speed and HP. We should all be celebrating. I can not think of a better time in the last 30 years to be a big sportbike fan than right now!!! For the love of all that is right with the world don't let a magazine choose the bike for you. Let you choose the bike that is right for you. Because right now there is not a bad bike in the lot. ENJOY!!!

The fact that the 1299 got left that bad off the line indicates they couldn't launch it and they should have left wheelie control at least on 1

You really can't go,by that video though. It says that the actual numbers were with the same rider on all three bikes. That video was just for show.

Literbikes are about big horsepower (as well as quick laptimes) so in my opinion drag races / times are very relevant.

"Just for show" or not, either the S1000RR rider was much better at launching the bike and/or they couldn't keep the front end down on the 1299 with the wheelie control off

The test rider didn't disclose whether or not he used the porta-potty in between the best elapsed time runs.

When raced, these bikes are absolutely drag bikes - from the flag/lights all the way to Turn 1. Ever hear of a roadracer that didn't care about the race start?

My money is that the R1M smokes the S1000RR and 1299S. Bet it puts down the same lap time as an 1199R.

Good point and I agree it's a drag to corner 1 but I think it really comes down to the rides ability to launch correctly and not so much the 1/4 mi drag time. We could drag all day and that doesn't tell you who's faster to and through turn 1 for a road race.

Expect the R1 and Aprilia RF to be the favorites but the 1299S will be right there in the lap times, it won't get "smoked" - MCN test already showed that (granted it was s standard R1, but the U.S. version is limited)

I can tell you that I did a bunch of roll-on test with me on my 1299S and my buddy on his 2015 S1000RR, both bikes stock and I pulled out two or three bike lengths on him every time (we stopped at around 170 mph, so I can't comment on how the two behave at higher speeds and whether the BMW might claw back some of that ground).. he weighs about 10 lbs more than I do.

I used to own a BMW S1000RR and put over 53,000 miles on it in every conceivable condition/circumstance, including many, many trackdays and the 1299 is just faster in everyday use. The BMW has all it's power in the last few thousand rpm..

For instance; at Thunderhill raceway, the BMW was geared all wrong for a couple of turns, specifically turn 15 that leads onto the front straight... Second gear was way too low, causing the bike to be either spinning the rear tire mercilessly at around 9,000-10,000 rpm, or in third gear which was way too high, meaning that I was at 6,000-7,000 rpm and had almost no drive onto the main straight. The 1299 will have more than enough grunt to get me out of that corner at 6,000 rpm and rocket me down the straight.

Of course we can change gearing to suit the track, but stock for stock, the 1299 SHOULD be better geared than the S1000RR is (I can't speak to the new R1).

Basically, we are talking a tenth of a second difference here and that is meaningless, depending on so many other factors. Each of these new bikes is so good, that each one will be better/worse than the others depending on which track they are best suited to.

shilling - that was top gear roll-on, correct? what starting speed?
Not just top gear, we tried 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th...

In every gear EXCEPT 6th, the 1299 had the advantage if we started where I was at 5,000 to 7,000 rpm and he was in the same general ballpark... When we moved up the rev range to around 9,000 rpm, he was far closer and the outcome was based on whoever got the best shifts in and had less wheelie to deal with...

In 6th gear, the 1299 goes through a HORRIBLE vibration at around 5,000 rpm, before hitting it's stride.. it feels as if I am abusing the bike, but I'm just so used to the smoothness of I4's that it's me that's the issue, not the bike... 6th gear roll-ons are very close between the two.

I am sure that one of the magazines will do a more scientific test of this, but in terms of usable power across the rev range, the 1299 is clearly better through the lower rpm ranges and in my experience, the BMW doesn't hold enough of a high rpm advantage to make up for what it loses down low.

Your experiences may vary..

Take into account the R1 and 1299 are limited in the US while the S1KRR isn't.. the bmw with the race thing unlocked is un-neutered the r1 and 1299 are neutered until flashed

Can you tell us a bit more about this please?

Cheers.

The R1 and 1199/1299 from stock even isn Race or R1 A mode are not at full hp/torque of the bikes ability based on the maps preset into the ecu. It is electronically limited. The 1199 is electronically limited to around 168 HP in race mode in the US. But put a termi map on it and boom it bumps the same as the S1kRR race mode map does.

The s1krr once they put the race map on after the first service BMW built a map that unleashes 95% of what that bike is capable of.
