My Ducati's and their Problems!

Was also informed there is no record of these issues with my bike from Ducati. Hmm. I have copies of the papers for it. Sent those and the pics.

Received 2 calls from DNA today..

1st call gentleman was apologetic and is gonna make sure the bike gets taken care of.. So that's good..

2nd call same gentleman.. the service rep cant find any sign of oil leaking. so I am going to email him the pics of it. Going to the dealer tomorrow also..

b9009b: Not to throw your dealer under the bus, but why did it have to be escalated to DNA. Did you speak with the local Ducati representative? That person should have ALL your details? Have you spoken with them?

Sorry if you already provided this info, but when my brother had issues, we spoke with our local rep & our dealer and they immediately took care of the issue.

Hope this helps, but hoping for the best for you.

I went to drop off the bodywork this morning as Ducati asked me to do and yesterday the guy told me the Service Rep said there is no signs of a leak on my bike. So I looked and low and behold its still leaking and dripping today after 2 weeks of not running.. Took new pics and sent to the guy. I'm not sure what the service rep is thinking but if he thinks i'm gonna go away quietly he has lost it..

Boost It went to DNA then Italy because The Service Rep never responded when the dealer filed the Warranty claim in 2 weeks. I have not spoke to the local rep, he has not attempted to contact me at all, ever about my bike.. I have spoken with DNA directly and Ducati Italy..

Let me start by saying that I haven't really ever put my bike's problem's out there until now. I have purchased 2 Ducati's right out of the crate and both were nightmares.. I'll start at the beginning..

I was out of riding for around 12 years after being injured in combat and just got cleared to ride again so I went right for DREAM BIKE territory.. I wasn't cleared to go back to sport bikes but the Hyper fit the bill for me until the time I was cleared. I purchased a new 2013 Ducati Hypermotard and was as thrilled as ever to ride.. Nervous as hell, but thrilled.. The owner of the shop delivered the bike to my house for me and I was off and running.. a month into it the bike would rev to the limiter regardless of throttle input and then come back down making it unsafe to ride.. It took 3 attempts to fix it.. turned out it the was the Throttle assy.. this whole time the bike would hard start everytime I rode it.. No matter how much or how little fuel was in it. It spent more time in the shop with the evap can "Airing" out as its called than it did on the road. Even with a half a tank in it, it would still do it and it was said the reason is i "leaned the bike over too far" meaning the lean angle of the stock tire was too much so I had enough after a year and traded the bike in for my current 2014 1199 base model (new in crate). This is were the real fun begins.. so I will use bullet points from here on out..

Day One - Heavenly salsa lusty bliss.. No for real not kidding.. Rode for hours after leaving the dealership.. Lets just way me and wet/sport mode got thru those break in miles pretty quick. I pointed out that the QS seemed to shift hard as hell and was told it gets better after first service. So ok cool lets ride.

Week 2.. I felt the bike was underpowered and still shifting hard as hell.. Took to shop and nothing was found. I have the oem exhaust on so I figured wth its probably that choking the .... out of the motor.

Within a Month - Hard starts non stop and had to bleed the front brake daily. Plus the QS was getting worse. No fix or concern so I figured it was normal.

Shortly thereafter(week) - Front brake fails after bleeding 20 minutes before sending me into an intersection of a 4 lane major road.. Hairy as hell made it thru clean.. Same day dealer picked up the bike(MC replaced) happened again within a week on to MC #2.. seemed to be good then a month later I had to bleed it again and didn't have problem since.

Now to months 3-8.

QS still shifting hard as hell.. Bike still underpowered when riding friends 1199 getting pissed.. Also noticed the bike was making no power above 60mph and sounded really weird. Took the bike to the dealer.. Come to find out the exhaust servo valve was stuck closed on the exhaust backing up the front cylinder on the bike for god knows how long.. Servo was replaced all was well and was told this could create an engine issue and to keep and eye on it.. Nothing for the QS and no explanation was given.

Months 6-today.. QS being a POS, Oil leaking from Various places in the engine.. Large gearbox metal chunks in the oil. Notes QS by dealer that it is was extremely hard on shift.. Ducati's service rep told the dealer to tell me not to use the QS at all as there was no way to change the setting in the ECU for this. and the change the oil on the bike and tell me to ride it for the 3500 miles and check it again.. Well ran the bike for 240ish miles noticed more leaks so took it back in.. Dealer took the oil out noticed more large chucks and main bearing shavings in my oil this time.. ALOT.. Message was sent to Ducati Rep who blamed me for the oil leaks on the engine saying I over filled the oil. Mind you the dealer does all of my oil changes and I check the sight glass on picking up the bike.. Not overfilled. Still no fix for the QS either.. They said to remove the sump screen filter and check for chunks/flakes etc.. Some were there but not as much so the rep said fill it back up and run it for the full 3500 miles this time.. So off I went being patient as ever... 400 miles later riding the bike I smell burning oil and some other weird .... the bike boggs down to almost shut off then surges to redline then back to 4k rpm.. I wait for a good place to pull off the road and it does it again and surges even worse and almost causes me to highside.. pull over call my wife to bring my truck and take it straight home.. Take the fairings off and it was a fondue fountain of Oil cascading down the front, rear, right side and bottom of the bike.. So much came out it covered my bike mat and I could see any oil in the sight glass at all.. I added oil back and it took a few quarts..

In ending. the bike is at the dealer for the final time. I have called DNA and informed them of this I guess I will talk to them tomorrow at some point about it but this is a Lemon/Garbage and for me to have bought 2 shoddy Duc's in a row brand new and it speaks volume to me that I put my dream bike up to far on a pedestal and I have been let down for the final time. I paraphrased mostly but understand this has been from day one with this bike and 1.5 years in I am done with it and being patient and probably forgot alot too. A few of you know me and my bike well outside of here and have seen what I have dealt with from her.. This may help to explain my knowledge of the bike as well lol

WOW and I thought I had problems...:eek::eek::eek::eek:

My 2015 1299S has had a crap load of problems also.. It dies on me from time to time.. Runs real rough most of the time (intermittently) at anything below 10% throttle and it surges and buck and kicks on the hwy at 70 to 75 mph.. Of course whenever I bring it in to the dealer they tell me it isn't throwing any codes etc. so they have no clue how to fix it and I just get told that "that is just the way they run" I cant blame the dealer they have tried and tried to get it to run right however I just got a bad one and there is nothing to be done until it finally breaks something (hopefully while still in warranty) and maybe then they will be able to fix it..
I have spent another $5k on exhaust and Rapid Bike unit to try to fix it.. However I haven't had near the problems like you have with the oil leaks etc..

*Mine did have the throttle sticking in first gear when slowing down but after 6 months the dealer finally fixed that. That is after they had replaced the ECU and Throttle body and injectors and also the throttle assembly..

Sounds like both of us got lemons.. Mine is better than it was but still not what it should be for the money it costs..

If I decide to keep it next year and will definitely be purchasing the extended warranty LOL..

Don't feel bad. Mine developed a hairline crack on the crankcase behind the vertical cylinder, in the water channel that caused the coolant to seep out into the crankcase seams and weeped outside.
Solution: remove engine, disassemble, REPLACE CRANKCASE, reassemble.
Cost me around 4000usd only because i managed to find a secondhand crankcase on ebay (which luckily was good)

I wouldn't feel so bad if they had fixed it the first few times. Mines under warranty so it's on them. I'm not paying a penny more for it to be fixed.

1+1 isn't equating to 2 with this. Somewhere, someone is full of ..... It's either the rep or my dealer. I'm going thru all my DNA warranty paperwork and receipts and .... just doesn't add up. Most of the claims put in are for some of the issues but not all of them. Maybe that's why the guy at DNA said its not in the system.

It has a lot to do with the "trickle dow effect" lie we see in Aerospace. You have PhD's conceptualizing and designing things. Guys with 4 year college degrees flying the things and guys with GED's assembling and serviceng things. There is a fair amount of disconnect there. The PhD's live in a bubble and assume that the level of sophistication and attention to detail is maintained across the model. Im sure its consistent across industries

Well the plot thickens... I'll keep this updated more frequently as it appears to be taking a strange turn..

And one month later. No response from Dealer or Ducati on what is going to be done to fix this. I have called/emailed dealer and rep.. Guess its time to hand this over to JAG and see what that does.. This is ....... stupid...

What happened to the strange turn?

The strange turn was noticing what the dealer put on their forms and what was entered into Ducatis system this whole time were completely different. Now I'm Absolutely being ignored.

Welcome to the Ducati adventure man!

Sadly, some people will accept the issues, some will deny it and others will blame the rider or just say "ohh its a Ducati deal with it" - This bike creates lots of passion. Trust me!

I was in the same position as you (different problems tho) and was very close to hate my bike but, with a little TLC I have been able to take care of the small issues so far and I really hope it stays that way! I used to have another account here and my last post was basically saying this bike is a POS with great looks and I deleted my account, then wanted to come back after falling in love with it but forgot my password and had to create a new account, LOL!

You are "lucky" because you still have warranty and can take care, hopefully, of the major issues thru warranty. I bought mine with 4k miles in it and no warranty.

So far mine had a little leak where you flush your coolant but I realized the copper washer was not "centered" and I re-align it and no more leaks (at least from there)

My gear sensor went crazy on me one day and wouldn't really tell me in what gear I was..... I replaced it (used one from ebay, with less miles than what I had on my bike) and knock on wood. problem solved ever since

I have a small oil leak coming from somewhere behind the radiator and I am planing on "patching it" with high resistance silicone (I think its called something like RTV).. The leak is not really major because I never see an oil drop on the ground but I notice all the black plastics under the engine very shiny and it bothers me!

My clutch was a pain in the ... because I always had problems getting in in Neutral... I bled the clutch like a million times and problem came back every 200-300 miles. I replaced the clutch slave cylinder (also used from ebay, with less miles than the one I had), bled the clutch AGAIN but I made sure It was done properly and also replaced the reservoir hose with a clear one because the black one was sweating and the clear one allows me to see if here are bubbles in the system. Ohh.. and I added teflon tape to all the bleeders (making sure I am not covering the little hole where the fluid is supposed to flow) and ever since... neutral gets there like BUTTER

The throttle, I hated the litttle play in it. Solved with the throttle spacer kit. Easy and cheap fix

Hmm what else? Oh yea... hard starts after engine was warm. It was so EMBARRASSING when I had people in front of me admiring my bike while I was filling up the tank and then it was a struggle firing her up. Some people suggested to give it some gas and yes it worked but come on! - Found out after reading here and there that if you get rid of the charcoal canister the problem goes away and it indeed was solved FINALLY!

Oh! at stop lights, if i revved the bike a little to listen to that gorgeous ducati sound, sometimes the rpms would drop to the point I felt it was gonna die on me... I replaced the air filter with a K&N one and also bought a BoosterPlug and problem solved. By the way the BoosterPlug is awesome for when you feel your stock bike rides like crap when cruising at low speeds and the ride/throttle is so jerky! It also helped me a lot with the low/mid range hesitation. - By the way I am selling my boosterplug because after recently replacing my exhaust I am planing on having my ECU flashed, so... no more need for the boosterplug

Taking care of the bike myself made me love it! Its like a satisfaction to see her come together and thats how I started building the passion for it.

Anwyay bro, I took my time to write all this down so you feel you are not the only one. I feel your pain, Ive had Japanese bikes for the past 15 years and they never gave me a problem. This is my first Ducati (2013 1199 base/ABS) and its been a year so far and I feel like I am falling in love with it (FINALLY)... so, hang in there and you will too.... Be thankful you have the warranty and give it a chance to show you its a great machine and come on, the looks are the best thing!

Cheers!

Dude I feel for you! :(

You have had even more problems than I have had! It is a shame that such a beautiful bike has such problems... Even though the dealers seem to want to help they are not able to replace or do any modifications to the bike to correct it unless they get a "code" thrown on their engine analysis computer ( or unless the factory rep approves it) From what I have seen the factory rep is more interested in blaming us rather thatn actually making sure the bike is fixed...

You should not have to "not use your quick shifter" or any other feature that was designed into the bike (and that you paid good money for) just because the factory cannot or will not fix it...! I recently purchased the extended warranty in case anything else goes wrong with my 1299 S.. It is now worth half of what I paid for it (not counting the extra $5k put in exhaust and other options ) so I just have to keep it..

I am really disappointed with the Ducati product and will probably not purchase another one unless they can finally get this bike running properly (and that is a very low probability)

The dealer cant really help or figure it out so If it runs bad and stalls or surges and they ride it they just tell me that there is nothing wrong with it and that they couldn't find any issues...
I guess it is rather subjective. Maybe they are just used to riding a bike that has crappy fueling around town? Or maybe I am just too picky.. I just assumed when I laid down over $25 K for a bike that It would be a better machine than a $14k Kawasaki... LOL..
I guess that I am just used to riding 4 cylinder Jap bikes that run smooth, * I knew that the Big twin would be running a little more vibrations etc. and idle a little rougher etc.that a 4 cylinder would however I have ridden two different demos (and also another friends 1299 S like mine) and all three of them would run smoother and hold a steady speed without the tachometer/rpm surge up and down and their bikes didn't buck and kick like it was about to stall like mine has.

*I recently had my original ECU reinstalled (the old one was replaced by the dealer last year trying to fix the original issue of it sticking around 3000 rpm in first gear) It still bucks and kicks at in town speeds...So that was a waste of time and money..

Oh well I digress.. I seems you got two different turd bikes.. Some people have luck of the draw and get good ones You and I evidently got lemons..

Unfortunately I don't think you or I will ever get real satisfaction on our bikes. We can "put up with it" to an extent but when they die on you in traffic (or worse like your bike and start leaking oil and other fluids) then you cannot depend on it for any long distance rides for sure.
I will be very interested to see how you lawsuit with Ducati works out.. I may take that route also.

Keep us informed..
