So I have posted this in a few forums that I am a member off. Any input would be most likely helpful.

So after 6 years as a Firefighter/EMT I was forced into early retirement (herniated disk L4-L5) at 28 years old. Now its time to start over again. I am thinking of going back to school for Network Engineering, about 90% sure but unable to say 100%. I have no desire to be a Lawyer or anything of that nature.

If you where in my situation or when you where... what did/would you do?

Thank you.

I would say you have a rare opportunity. Use it wisely, and do what you will enjoy.

Why do you want to get into network engineering?

Seems like a more hands on side of IT. Good pay and interested enough that I wont hate going to work. But I could be wrong. I looked into Cyber security but I dont think I could sit in front of a screen all day.

Good answer. I'm at IT Manager and I can't stand the physical part of the networking side, whenever I had to run cables etc in the past I felt like an electrician. I didn't sign up for that .... lol. I'm more of a systems/infrastructure guy.

lol I have been in those situations as a firefighter, scratching my head trying to remember if they covered standing fully geared up waiting on the gas company to show up for 3 hours.

I really think there is probably a lot in IT i would enjoy but I really know very little about it.

There's good money in it that's for sure. Especially if you run the show. Lots of businesses are doing away with in house IT and are contracting it out.

Are you by chance former Military dude? If so I can help you out w GI Bill stuff since its what I do. Also, have good info on treating that injury as mine is similar but in cervical spine. Tough decision to make changing occupations but good things lie ahead for you my friend! Best wishes.

I have a network engineering degree, and you are right. More hardware oriented, but inevitably you will be using a terminal/administrative console. I loved it!

You missed the conf call today! We need another virtual server built this weekend to host WebSphere MQ, can you handle that? :)

3 hours? Sheesh! In my neck of the woods, I'd show up within 30 minutes :D

Then again, SoCal Gas obviously isn't everywhere lol.

I chose Fire Dept over Navy and Jets tryout , even left college early and am missing 4 credits to graduate (but that is actually a blessing).

I really appreciate all the good information and words of encouragement, I really needed it. Its hard starting over at near 30. I keep telling myself I'm not old but with 3 kids, 4 years of college football and a shot back, it would seem my body is telling me another story.

I work for an American company, working in outsourcing.
Let me tell ya, it's doom and gloom, given everyone
wants to maximise their profitability by using cheap foreign labour markets.
90% of my team is based in either KL or Manila.

Any specific role that doesn't require hands and feet, is proposed to move offshore. Perhaps in a country like the US, there might be a better ratio of
Business keeping operations in house... If its outsourced, the bulk of roles will be offshore. Not the best role to look at.

In aus, it's fast drying up...

That said, it's a great role. And I'm one to design , maintain and even run cables. Doing the lot yielded the most cash (network wise)

So this is an example of ? Network Engineer responsibilities?

Good thing I don't live in America.

I have an IT Consulting business too. We focus on small businesses that aren't big enough for their own IT department.

When I say outsourcing, I mean local outsourcing, not phoning India for tech support.

Mate, it's fkn terrible here. All the big banks have sent work offshore.
Most of the Telcos have done the same for certain roles.
And big business says, .... outsource and shed jobs as us IT guys are too expensive.

Probably shouldn't ride the 1199 to work ;)

That said I've a customer I'd like to go to.
There are some very nice roles out there.
IT is a good industry, just find the right sector.

This could be you in a few years!
