Note the black cover over the head, too.

I don't think I have to mention how ugly it is.

Thanks for the pic! Yeah it ain't that pretty, but if it works I'll take it. Summer in California gets pretty uncomfortable and I can only imagine how hot it'll be in the pits at Thunderhill when it's 110* out.

They let you keep the original parts right? If the aesthetics really bother me I could always switch back.

I'm not as horrified as some of the other posters either. Maybe it's because I got used to the SF and it has a shield slightly down and left of this one that doesn't look too much better. *shrug*

doesn't look as cute as the original but it's not way ugly either (to me). something tells me if this had been the original one, no one would be begging to replace it. still gotta see it in person before i make the final call for myself. since the heat doesn't bug me as much anymore when i dress properly, i'm leaning towards no.

I wonder if this would result in the engine over heating for those of us living in hotter climates. Or causing any of the internals to start melting. The heat trapped around that rear cylinder would be tremendous i imagine.

I am very disappointed with this compromise, I expected better from Ducati. I will not be installing this compromise on my 1199.

My fiancée got radiant heat burns on her right ankle from a 30 mins ride on the Pani , i figure its the heat from the exhuast , So if this solves that , I'm a happy man

Wow...well I guess I'm in tiny minority here...I think you guys are totally over reacting...

I'm in the minority with you. If it had come on the bike I wouldn't have thought twice about it and probably wouldn't even have noticed. As long as it doesn't cause other parts of the motor to overheat and/or damage other components and drops the temp significantly I'll likely install it when I get around to it. I still haven't gotten a letter yet though!

Finding out more details on this today. What I do know is that you will be required to bring your bike into the dealership to have this part mounted, and they will be keeping the old piece that it replaces. I am inquiring what the consequances are if one elects NOT to have this change made, since it obviously does not appeal to many. Perhaps it doesnt look as bad in person but we shall see. I know many dealers dont even have them yet so the letter makes no difference at all. Everything is done via your VIN so you dont need letter to have parts changed if they have it in already.

I kinda figured it might be a safety recall type issue and not an option since people have reported burns, etc. I guess we'll see once the parts start coming in or dealerships start getting more 2013 models that come with that part from the factory.

Just had a call from my dealer in the UK - the heat shielding is now coming to UK bikes. However, the dealer said the letter I'm about to receive from Ducati will have two other upgrades on offer:

A new ECU flash to improve ridablity and an option to change to a 41 tooth rear sprocket (at cost). If you don't go for the chargeable rear sprocket then the new flash is different to comprehend the existing 39 tooth sprocket. Anyone else heard about this?

Having seen the ugly heat shielding kit there's no way its going on my bike. It appears the new heat shielding is not a safety recall and so should not be mandatory.
