new heat shield- just got the letter from ducati

Help Support Ducati Forum:

Interesting, from RM4TWO Sept last year: "The fix supposedly includes a larger heat shield with heat reflecting material and a cover for the rear cylinder head that will also be lined with this reflective material. He didn't say whether this would be a recall/no charge item to existing owners or a paid option. So it's safe to assume the 2013.5 and 2014 models should have fewer heat related issues?"

My letter says it will be at no cost to me.

I got the letter by email today ( in AU)

Considering that the last time I rode my bike I got a heat rash on the inside of both thighs (wearing regular civi jeans) and nearly had to park the bike it was getting so unbearably hot, I'm exstatic about this.

Only thing is though, I have the full Termi system which comes with its own CF heat shield from Termi (not Ducati). I hope the new shield fits the race manifold or that they are making a cover (hopefully CF) to for the full system. The Termi heat shield is the shiny CF so it doesn't match any of the Matt CF DPP fitted so hopefully this will be addressed also.

I'm tipping the cylinder cover will soon have an expensive CF DPP option as a replacement...probably in 3-4 months after everyone has had the stock one fitted so dealers can make some money on labor fitting it as well.

My letter said all the upgrades are free except the 41T rear sprocket.

RE the upmap, I have a Rapid ECU module with auto-tune fitted - anyone know if this map will be of any use to me?

RE exchanging parts, I'm happy for Ducati to take my stock, plastic heat shield but I have no intention of exchanging the Termi carbon heat shield which I didn't buy from them.

For those not aware, the cooling fan comes on at around 103 deg C IIRC and the bike will actually shut down at 120deg C and not restart until the engine temp is down below 103 again. This has happened to my local dealer in his bike and this was during track day riding so clearly this is a significant issue and those not replacing the heat shield eyc risk damaging the motor IMHO. I wouldn't be surprised if not doing so would void the manufacturer warranty on the engine.

I wanted to fit a 14T front or 41T rear as soon as I saw the specs on the R model. My dealer started taking the front sprocket off and realised it's a new design which they didnt have stock of - the 1198 and earlier models used the same sprocket. I think I'll go with the 14T front over the 41T rear since it will have a greater effect on the ratio and likely be significantly cheaper.

Looking forward to being able to ride my >$40K bike on hot days. Seeing jap / I4 riders go past me in traffic in SHORTS while Im in my car because it was too hot to take the 1199 out has been frustrating to say the least...

Some of you people are such prima donnas. Who cares what the heat shield looks like, it's flat black. It's not like it stands out. No ones gonna be looking at the bike and go Hey is that the new Duca...oh my that heat shield is disgusting, Ducati really should have tidy'd that thing up a bit.

I spoke to my dealer on Saturday and they told me that both the heat shield update and the sprocket change were optional.
I think we will be able to keep the old heat shield.

Oops, can't use the J word on this forum

JALAPEÑOS!!! The spiciest Ducati forum on the internetZ ! :D

I'll add my 2 cents in this thread beyond it looking hideous I would just ask about how "effective" this new cover is. May not even be worth while.
