new heat shield- just got the letter from ducati

Dealer just confirmed - this is NOT a safety recall, you do not have to have the extra heat shielding if you don't want to - at least that's the case in the UK. They also confirmed that the warranty is good even without the extra heat shielding fitted.

I'm guessing future full Termi's will come with the new (ugly) heat shield by default, albeit made in carbon, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

If Ducati think the new sprocket is a good idea then I guess all new bikes will also come with a larger 41 tooth rear by default. Anyone care to calculate the effect on gear ratios? (I don't know the number of teeth on the front sprocket).

front is 15T delivered.
i ride 14T.

+1, but he was asking about the rear, whcih s 39T OEM. So those of us with the 14T/39T have a 2.73 ratio, and the new OEM 41T/15T would provide 2.78. So lowering top end to 279 kmh?

that's what happens when you can't manage quick reading...

What? Why would they change the rear sprocket size?

Lowers the gearing and increases revs in all gears for a given road speed. This would make the bike more managable in 1st gear at low speed (at the expense of top end speed). Hands up everyone who's used the 170mph top end on their Panigale? No me neither. I'd take better acceleration and ridablity over top end.

So stock is 2.60 (15T F/39T R), changing the rear to 41 (15T F/41 R) gives 2.78 and changing the front to 14 (14T F/39T R) gives 2.73.

How does it ride with a ratio of 2.73, do you notice a big difference?

I did it to help with the porblems that the upmap fixed, low and mid range roughness. Now wit the upmap, it is very peppy, wheelie happy. If I had done the upmap first, I may not have gone this route. But many riders always put a 14T on their bikes. I really don't need the 187mph, so I will probably stay here. Also it would cost a new sprocket and time to change, so not worth it to me.

Note the black cover over the head, too.

I don't think I have to mention how ugly it is.

So all new models will have this ugly cover??? I can't stand it! I wonder if you would be able to choose which cover in the future?

Just had a call from my dealer in the UK - the heat shielding is now coming to UK bikes. However, the dealer said the letter I'm about to receive from Ducati will have two other upgrades on offer:

A new ECU flash to improve ridablity and an option to change to a 41 tooth rear sprocket (at cost). If you don't go for the chargeable rear sprocket then the new flash is different to comprehend the existing 39 tooth sprocket. Anyone else heard about this?

Having seen the ugly heat shielding kit there's no way its going on my bike. It appears the new heat shielding is not a safety recall and so should not be mandatory.

Any more information on this? Anybody in the US hear anything on this. I got the heat letter, but nothing like this. Certainly curious about any new ECU and changing to 41T if it means smoother low speed riding.

Same here Rick got the letter about heat but nothing about sprocket changes. I did get the new upmap for better low end drivability and midrange torque but have not had a lot of time to test due to it being cold here.

You'll appreciate the new upmap, it really was an improvement. But I do a lot of low speed, urban commuting, so ALWAYS interested in a smoother low speed ride, and I'll NEVER hit top speed so losing some there is not a concern for me.

Not had the letter yet, it's just what the dealer told me over the phone. The service manager read the dealer communication from Ducati to me, so I have no reason to doubt them

I don't get any of the mail Ducati (allegedly) send me and I've still to this day never had any of the safety recall letters, so I'll give Ducati UK a call in the morning to see if they can tell me more.

Anyone else in the UK heard about the sprocket change and new map from their dealer or had a letter?

My local dealer told me the exhaust shield is going to be free, but I may have to pay for the cylinder cover - which doesn't make sense at all!!!!!

Interesting, from RM4TWO Sept last year: "The fix supposedly includes a larger heat shield with heat reflecting material and a cover for the rear cylinder head that will also be lined with this reflective material. He didn't say whether this would be a recall/no charge item to existing owners or a paid option. So it's safe to assume the 2013.5 and 2014 models should have fewer heat related issues?"
